I'm at a conference at the federal courthouse, and as I drove here l observed cops (not in riot gear) on every corner surrounding Portland State University (the urban campus downtown), and schoolbuses pulling up in front of the Schnitz and also backing up traffic on the freeway nearby. Looks like they're about to roust the antiwar encampment, and expecting multiple arrests. #Portland#PDX
@RiaResists gorgeous day, a little hot, and the ridge line is steep on the way up, but there's a big, cold, shady creek at the bottom when you come back down hot and tired ♥️
small occupation so far by the psu library, it'll no doubt grow through the night, and perhaps the weekend -- no megaphones as of 7:00pm, i hope they keep it that way!
Put on your #superhero costume to celebrate #NationalSuperheroDay! 2:15pm Sunday Apr 28th, family-friendly bike ride from the Sunnyside School playground to Books With Pictures. 2 miles each way with a break at the comic shop and food carts before looping back to the start.
#KidicalMassPDX rides at a 4-6mph pace for little pedallers & cargo bikes (training wheels, scoot bikes, scooters, or walking with wagons not advised.)
“For years, advocates have been sounding the alarm on the worsening epidemic of traffic violence in our community and proposing solutions which have been ignored by the City Council,” Sarah Iannarone, executive director of nonprofit The Street Trust, said in a press release. “Of course the problem continues to worsen.”
"...I want to note we’ve been here before,” Lauritzen continued. “We’ve been at somber events, we’ve been at memorials where we say the work is important…that loss of life is terrible. And yet, here we are again.” #CarSupremacy#CarsRuinCities
This decade of status quo prolongment brought to you by failed mayor ted wheeler, sitting on his hands exactly like his owners elected him to do.
I'm confused both by how any asshole on ted's right manages to get elected in this town and by how/who elected Hardesty but then switched to Gonzales 🥴 what is in that voter's brain or did #Portland just get sold off to right-wingers?
@danlyke cars ruin cities yeah. Cool if she walks to the store but IME that part of town is walking distance to a few things, good streetcar bones like even my hilly SW area, yet very few/zero Portland neighborhoods are 20min ones except by bike. I think this was Hardesty and also Eudaly's mistakes as transportation commissioner, to not go hard and fast on bikeways, fast enough that people felt the opening of the streets to them within that 1.5yr window before the election.
Hi #Portland#PDX#BikeTooter neighbors, I’m considering buying an e-bike (instead of a car, so think one-person Costco hauls) and I’m wondering if anyone is willing to share insights/advice/pro tips on living the e-bike + no elevator top floor apartment dweller lifestyle 😅
I can move but I want to stay in the suburbs so an elevator is a tough ask… should I try to secure a storage/garage allotment? Is regular bike parking secure enough? Do I start powerlifting now so I can take on a 50lb bike?
@agnes
I'm pushing for the local town government to mandate secure ground-floor storage for everyone, apartments or single family homes. Preferably with an electrical outlet.
That will make e-bikes a viable choice for apartment dwellers, who anyway may have other things to store that people store in a garage, snowboards, canoes, etc.
@agnes Not in PDX, but I do store (longjohn-style) cargo bikes outside in NYC (and previously in SEA). If you get a motorcycle cover, it stops looking as tempting a target for theft. And also keeps it somewhat dry, though not completely. Good luck!
#Portland, it's the last day to submit testimony for the city budget for the next year. Ask for #SafeStreets & traffic-calming hardware. Your testimony can simply be “Please fully fund programs that build and support multimodal transportation, and traffic calming with infrastructure to protect people walking and biking. Monitoring should hold all bureaus accountable for prioritizing resources to transition Portland away from fossil fuels and reduce our GHG emissions."
