Universal staff shortages in almost every sector worldwide?

Geez, you'd almost think there'd been a deadly plague that had torn through the planet and killed, maimed, or incapacitated people, and caused serious emotional damage even to those who didn't get it.

@grrrr_shark Here in Seattle, WA, US, we see fewer retail workers and bus schedules reduced due to staffing shortages per the companies or agency that runs them. AND we see this in grocery stores ("We're hiring!" signs), drug stores ("We're hiring!" signs), county transit system ("We're hiring!" signs), etc.

@grrrr_shark@supervolcano.angryshark.eu avatar

@indigo8s @StillIRise1963 yup. Also here in Switzerland. And everywhere else I go.

vfrmedia,
@vfrmedia@social.tchncs.de avatar

@indigo8s @grrrr_shark companies say they are hiring, but they often aren't training and haven't been for 20-30 years (especially transport/infrastructure) - it takes several months to a year to properly train a bus driver, and skilled trades require a couple of years apprenticeship and with everything outsourced to the lowest bidder too many subcontractors are very lean companies with 0 slack time/resources left for training new staff..

grrrr_shark,
@grrrr_shark@supervolcano.angryshark.eu avatar

@vfrmedia @indigo8s this definitely exacerbates the problem.

justafrog,
@justafrog@mstdn.social avatar

@grrrr_shark I'm honestly surprised the effect isn't more pronounced already.

I'd love to be 100% wrong about this, but I expect it to get much worse over time.

grrrr_shark,
@grrrr_shark@supervolcano.angryshark.eu avatar

@justafrog Same.

grrrr_shark,
@grrrr_shark@supervolcano.angryshark.eu avatar

@justafrog given international supply chain issues and all sorts of other "pandemic effects" that never seemed to resolve, I suspect you are right. And that it's worse than reported.

epicdemiologist,
@epicdemiologist@wandering.shop avatar

@grrrr_shark You'd almost think employers (at least here in the US) are paying wages that won't support you, offering substandard if any health insurance, and insisting that you get exposed constantly to an ongoing plague that can disable you for life.

grrrr_shark,
@grrrr_shark@supervolcano.angryshark.eu avatar

@epicdemiologist Yeah, funny that. :(

ninavizz,
@ninavizz@mastodon.social avatar

@grrrr_shark I dunno, maybe employers also just don't want to pay people what they're worth? Refusing to hold up their own side of the "supply and demmand" part of things?

grrrr_shark,
@grrrr_shark@supervolcano.angryshark.eu avatar

@ninavizz Also.

It's not just one of these things. It is all of them.

@grrrr_shark
I've seen a lot of people talking about broken social contracts. It's hard to see how people would stay motivated knowing what the stark reality of their existence is & just how quickly the world will grind them under if doing so becomes profitable to the right individuals.

grrrr_shark,
@grrrr_shark@supervolcano.angryshark.eu avatar

@IntentionallyBLANK Yes, this. This is what has defeated me, honestly.

I'm still working, but my soul is fucked up beyond belief.

Good luck

If it is any consolation there are lots of us in this boat.

schratze,
@schratze@todon.nl avatar

@grrrr_shark I don't even believe the staff shortage narrative either. You'd think I would be able to find a job by now if it was real. I believe the real problem is that employers have absolutely astronomical requirements for their workers while at the same time being completely unwilling to pay them appropriately or treat them with any semblance of respect

But yeah you're right, capitalists LOVE to pretend that the pandemic never happened and that coronavirus isn't an issue anymore

grrrr_shark,
@grrrr_shark@supervolcano.angryshark.eu avatar

@schratze I definitely think both issues come into play - there ARE parts of the workforce that were decimated or where people simply left because they were hung out to dry, but also, employers couldn't stand the idea that workers could make demands for livable pay, so they simply don't hire enough labour, and refuse to offer ppl what they are worth or make accommodations. Which means that people that stay are burned out, and other competent ppl don't get hired.

    @autolycos I was saying a plague caused it, I didn't mention people. But the people are definitely the huge exascerbating feature in there.

    grrrr_shark,
    @grrrr_shark@supervolcano.angryshark.eu avatar

    @autolycos No one could have escaped the plague alone without some scars, but the assholes?

    Yeah, the assholes are the big damage. Because we now know how awful they are, how many they are, and how much they can fuck everything up.

    grrrr_shark,
    @grrrr_shark@supervolcano.angryshark.eu avatar

    @autolycos I think maybe you interpreted "those who didn't get it" as folks who didn't understand.

    I meant that even people who didn't come down with COVID suffered severe moral injury.

    @autolycos Yeah, I can only f'ing imagine. Same kinds of things happened here.

    I am a vary large lady, much to my chagrin. Any reasonable person would look at me and not even question that I was high risk just based on that risk factor alone (there are others).

    I went in to my doctor to get a waiver to let me get vaccinated with others in my risk category, and the receptionist looked at me and said, "But you have to have a BMI over 35!"

    And I just STARED at her.

    grrrr_shark,
    @grrrr_shark@supervolcano.angryshark.eu avatar

    @autolycos Like, lady, what do you think that LOOKS like?

    I have had to fight to get every vaccination I've got. Eventually, we now just work around the system, going to one hospital that does it on the sly, or over the border to Germany.

    One doctor, mid-COVID, wore his mask under his nose. I reported him.

    And those are the small things.

    It's pretty hard to go around without faith in humanity anymore. :(
