This headline thrills me. One day Faye Brown thought, Fuck it, I'm writing a Brexit poem, and then an editor said, Fuck it, we are printing it.

Friendly reminder that, as someone who lives in NYC, in the South Bronx (represent!) and who works in Manhattan and Brooklyn ... nothing has changed in this city because of immigration. You'd need to send like half a million people here before we'd even notice, and we'd mostly like it?

More stores are open. I'm amused that outdoor dining continues and I hope it never ends (LOL suck it cars.) That's the news from da big city, ya'll.

IntentionallyBLANK,

@futurebird
I'm in a big (ish) city in a state that borders Mexico with a governor that was recently having a hissy fit about immigrants (despite being a dem herself 🤷🏼).

Like, what crisis?

The only crisis I'm worried about is the coming water crisis and the crazies who will be renegotiating water rights around here in 2025. The immigrants are doing fine.

Most of the people we know, my kids friends, and their significant others are immigrants.

Thank God we're not in Texas. I don't know what they're smoking over there but it's not good for the brain.

What is the hardest you've ever worked?

If you want to tell me the hardest you've ever worked it, please provide photos.

IntentionallyBLANK,

@RickiTarr

The hardest I've ever twerked was virtually when I attended a conference in SL and someone "helped" me by giving my avatar dance moves. I spent the rest of the conference trying and failing to get it to stop twerking. 🤔 Which was extra unfortunate because I was trying to pick up study participants for my research.

Now, the hardest I've ever worked was either teaching or doing CNA-type work looking after elderly people and children with disabilities back when I thought I'd be a nurse someday despite a not so great immune system.

I'm a library, museum, research type. I admire the people who can do that work, but I'm probably better off doing the implementation research and conducting the NASA-TLX or RULA for the processes than being the one getting sick and getting others sick in equal measure.

Okay, picking up from my video game post yesterday, I'm curious:

When you play video games, rpgs, ect, where you get to choose your character, do you tend to choose a character of the same sex, the opposite sex, non-binary, anthropomorphic, or a mysterious 4th option?

If you want to share screenshots of character builds I would enjoy that!

IntentionallyBLANK,

@RickiTarr I generally pick things that match me. It would've been different when I was younger, but these days I'm not sure I know how to be anyone other than just another iteration of myself 😆 even in a virtual space.

Everyone else in the household picks something wild or off the wall when they can. Axolotls whenever possible for a couple of them. Preferably pink. I don't know why.

Going to VWBPE is always a trip for me because it's kind of a professional space, but some people show up as mice or steampunk wizards to talk about otherwise serious research.

I will say, I've long since learned that wherever I go, the likelihood of running into a sword swallower, someone in a top hat or furry being present is pretty high. I'm good with that though

Since I'm thinking about it, let's talk about Ignorance. I have so many mixed thoughts on the subject. So, a little back story on me, for those who haven't already figured this out. My father was a pastor, I was raised extremely Conservative and religious, and while some of it struck me as a bit off, and I was certainly less Conservative than my parents, I was a good little girl and towed the party line. It wasn't until my little brother came out when he was 14, that my wake up call really began. Suddenly, it was personal, I love my little brother, how would he be going to Hell? If you start doubting one thing, then slowly you start doubting everything.

Because of this background, I do have empathy for what I consider true ignorance. For those who did not grow up in this environment, it can be really hard to understand how people can just blindly believe these things. They don't understand the cult like atmosphere that it truly is. All your media is this one thing, all your social circle are people that agree with you, you are quite literally in a bubble of propaganda. For me the combination of being around different kinds of people and factual education gave me the ability to see the truth, and it's something I still work on, with anything you consider fact, you should always leave a window open, there's always more to learn.

Sooo, if you read this far, What has been your experience with ignorance? What is something you've been ignorant about? Is willful ignorance actually a form of ignorance? Do you think there's any true ways to convince people they are missing out on the truth?

IntentionallyBLANK,

@RickiTarr

It would be a short version if I just listed the things I haven't been ignorant about in the past:

😂

Joking aside, we all have this narrow window of experience that serves as the lens through which we view the world. The only cures are curiosity and openness to admitting you're dead wrong. Sometimes that last one is a bridge too far. For some, it's too far for now and others it's too far forever.

Nice! I've been digging through that. I saw a ceilidh mentioned, are those all ages or more adult oriented? The teen traveling with me likes folk music and used to do Greek dancing at FDF and the local festivals like the Serbian Orthodox Church nearby and our own GOCA one. I thought it might be a nice idea, if it's what I'm thinking and I'm not totally reading that the wrong way 🤣

    We witness cities having massive freak-outs over homeless encampments expanding, but no consideration as to the conditions in society that have created this problem. How do you not see this explosion in need and suffering and not think perhaps we are backing an incorrect and untenable economic system?

    Fair point, but this is why the locals need to constantly push to keep the wealthy and political types in check.

    Okay, I'm thinking about gift giving today. A little backstory about why:

    Every year my Father-in-law attempts to get my Mother-in-law a gift. She is a bit of a shopper, and is notoriously difficult to shop for. Every year he gets her something he guesses a woman would like (perfume, sweater, jewelry), and every year she doesn't really like it, and ends up begrudgingly using it or returns it. They have been married over 30 years, and seem to have a pretty good marriage otherwise. It's like she wants him to magically understand what she wants, and he is sort of equally bad at the whole thing too. I will never understand why they don't just have a conversation about this. Just for extra fun, she is the most bizarre gift giver, also, to the point that it has become an annual tradition that I show my friends what she got us. A small list of things we have gotten:

    A couch cover with grapes on it
    A sexy nightgown
    A painting of the house they live in
    A gourd painted to look like a cat eating a bird
    A package of tea that I would have absolutely loved, stuffed with cheap tea bags
    Children's Lego sets
    Toy trains
    Underwear that didn't fit either of us
    A wooden board covered in seashells that is supposed to hold a curling iron
    A waterproof bed cover

    I could go on and on. Just to clarify this doesn't bother me or my husband at all, we actually get a kick out of the weirdness. I don't personally care about presents much, I'm more of an experiences person.

    SO, if you've managed to get this far, how do you feel about gift giving/getting? Feel free to elaborate and give examples!

    IntentionallyBLANK,

    @RickiTarr

    I pretty much hate it. I don't like receiving them and giving them fills me with absurd levels of anxiety.

    Why? Because this is how the conversation with my inner self goes:

    "What should I get them?"

    "I don't know."

    "Why don't you know?! You should know. If you really loved them, you'd know."

    "But, I do love them. I just don't know what they like for certain."

    "You don't?! You narcissist. You don't pay enough attention. I can't believe you."

    And so on....

    And then there's receiving gifts. Wonderfully thoughtful gifts make me feel guilty and bizarre gifts leave me thinking "What are they trying to say here?"

    I'm hoping at some point we can move to doing some kind of Yankee Swap thing when they get older to take the pressure off everyone.

    Right now the younger ones are still too young for that, though. Once everyone's past the 20 mark, I'm totally proposing it.

    IntentionallyBLANK,

    @CuriousMagpie @RickiTarr

    You have one of those, too? The banality of evil really is a thing, isn't it?

    When the in-laws still gave gifts, they gave my deathly allergic son nuts and my daughter (then 11 or 12) underwear from Victoria's Secret that said "naughty" on the butt... embarrassing the hell out of her.

    My then teenage oldest son was so mad he cut the undies to pieces, burned them, and sent the video of the destruction to MIL. I wasn't aware until afterwards, but my husband was mad at me over it.

    I don't recall what they got the two other boys (for some reason two of my kids were acceptable to them and the other two not...no idea why and it was a thing since their births).

    IntentionallyBLANK,

    @CuriousMagpie @RickiTarr

    Some people are just jerks. I'll be thrilled to have grandkids, if that's in the cards someday. I'll be minding my behavior like crazy so I don't lose out with them.

    If your kids and grandkids are in your life that's a huge privilege. They literally don't have to and living long enough to have kids/grandkids is also a massive gift.

    IntentionallyBLANK,

    @CuriousMagpie @RickiTarr

    Yeah, I'm not going there at all. No one wants to hear "so when do I get grandchildren??"

    I figure one of them is bound to have kids, since there are four of them. But, it's not my business. If they're still talking to me in adulthood and healthy/happy that's more than enough. Demanding grandkids is just greedy.

    IntentionallyBLANK,

    @Kierkegaanks @CuriousMagpie @RickiTarr

    It was kind of a jump scare. There was no warning so she opened that in front of everyone.

    Yeah, MIL is super gross on multiple levels. No dementia, they've always been this way. Actually, that's stepMIL. Regular MIL is just pure evil (like have to go to court to deal with evil). That's the rough thing about divorce and remarriage -- extra inlaws 😂 The FILs aren't so bad, individually, but the one is a massive addict and the other is just evil MILs lackey.

    So yeah, just a bunch of see you next Thursdays.

    Grandparent-wise the kids really got the short end. My mom's there for them, though. No living aunts or uncles, either, though.

    I'm no Trekkie - evidenced by the fact that I say "Trekkie" - but one of the Chris Pine/Abrams Star Trek movies is playing on the bar tv (the one with Benedict Cumberbatch as Khan, or Khanberbatch, as I like to say) and the jukebox went off for a few seconds and the Star Trek sound came up and I shouted across the bar "WE ALL AGREE NONE OF THIS SHIT EVER HAPPENED, RIGHT?"

    IntentionallyBLANK,

    @GrimmReality

    The kids wanted to watch the D&D movie a while back and it went something like this:

    "Come on, Mom, you have to forgive Chris Pine for those Star Trek movies eventually..."
