atomicpoet,

It’s not a terrible idea to create a network of interest-based Mastodon servers, but there’s an easier way to do the same thing.

Create one server that can host groups. Allow people from other servers to participate in those groups.

This is what I do with venera.social, and it’s what I will do with calckey.social once Channels start federating.

@atomicpoet I like groups better. I don’t know of any servers with my personal Venn diagram of interests.

TheVoyageur,

@atomicpoet That is kind of how Lemmy is set up too.

IM-not-so-HO:

• every family on planet earth should have their own server instance (with array of privacy, encryption, permission options)

• with as beating connectivity heart

• I don’t care what servers Chris Trottier or @davew use as long as I can connect with them

community needs to focus on smashing ‘network effects’ that has been weaponizing against humanity for 2 decades

@TryshHQ

One thing to keep in mind is that the technology behind , , scales in resource use with primarily by number of instances, not so much number of users.

To put it a different way, it’s a much larger load on the system to add 50 instances, two users each, than to add one instance with those same hundred users.

Be careful pushing for far expanded numbers of instances, as the resource use to do that might not be sustainable.

@atomicpoet how do Channels work with say Guppe or Friendica?

atomicpoet,

@thisismissem Right now, channels aren't federated so they don't work like Guppe or Friendica. They're localized on each Calckey server. But there's plans to federate them.

I don't know the ins and outs of Channels, but would just like to point to the Enhancements Proposals. If Channels require new mechanisms it would be best to accompany their federation support in with a well-documented .

See also the FEP about Groups federation, as implemented by : https://codeberg.org/fediverse/fep/src/branch/main/feps/fep-1b12.md

atomicpoet,

@smallcircles @thisismissem Yep, @kainoa and others are well aware of the FEP.

Yes, sorry. I am tooting fep, fep, fep, fep at every opportunity now that fedi has the momentum going, in hopes many devs will take the process in consideration 😅

@dragfyre That's the plan!

  • atomicpoet,

    @rm4 I've never used chirp.social, but one reason that I opted for venera.social is the moderation abilities.

    rm4,

    @atomicpoet I was testing a Chirp group out the other day. But I think it functions similar to Venera( - like the Fediverse news group?) You can allow the group to be visible in main directory or hidden if 18+. Can manually approve members if wanted and also moderate posts and make announcements too

    MariaTheMartian,

    @atomicpoet Oh man I love Channels. It'll be cool when they federate. 👽
