Hundreds of features.

17 pages.

7 chapters.

2 OSes.

Here it is: my annual review of iOS and iPadOS. Let's go 🚀

iOS and iPadOS 17: The MacStories Review https://www.macstories.net/stories/ios-and-ipados-17-the-macstories-review/

oneuponzero,

@viticci I used iPadOS 17’s Listen to Page in Safari to have large parts of your review read out to me. Transformative experience.

MSicc,

@viticci just made it until page 12 of your awesome review. But... your review does not mention one of the most important features of the Music app: Crossfade between songs!

viticci,
@viticci@macstories.net avatar
MSicc,

@viticci ok, so it’s me who missed it 😅 sorry

SuDeFeng,

@viticci An art piece. Amazely done, I love it.

@viticci
Fantastic. Overwhelming.

redv1ew,

@viticci Hi, why do you think StandBy is active only when the iPhone is charging? I think it’s a missed opportunity, given its usefulness and the amount of time the iPhone is lying on a surface but not charging. Yes, there is always-on screen and widgets, but they are few and small and StandBy could be triggered by landscape orientation and perhaps a gesture - without needing the in charge status.

SueDonimous,

@viticci I can’t BELIEVE how amazing that animation is at the top.

2du,

@viticci any true Apple fan would know it is “jiggle mode”

mzauk,

@viticci Been looking forward to this. I’m currently enjoying the eBook version of the review on Kindle Scribe

benostrander,

@viticci I enjoy these so much. I learn a ton too! Your work on these is the natural successor to the thorough Mac OS reviews @siracusa used to do!

kbradnam,

@viticci Thank you! Looking forward to reading this.

ravigupta,

@viticci Is it a coincidence that this is happening shortly after the release of the Surface special @connected episode 😀 - https://www.theverge.com/2023/9/18/23878609/microsoft-windows-panos-panay-leaving

@saadanis fixing, thanks

jtyoung,

@viticci Let’s gooo!!

@viticci Dunno if it's just me, but the video clips don't work on iPad using Ivory's in-app browser. 🤔

ZS,
@ZS@techhub.social avatar

@viticci iOS=iPadOS. So, only one OS. Just saying. 😂

FrankEndrullat,

@viticci Great and comprehensive as always! 👍

One thing that seems to be missing from iPadOS 17 is the ability to sync wallpaper setups between iOS and iPadOS, at least I haven’t seen it mentioned anywhere. In conclusion I must be one of the 6 people on the planet who want their backgrounds / wallpapers the same across their mobile devices, and I guess I have to recreate the on iPadOS 17 then to match my iPhone. 😐

rlounsbury,
@rlounsbury@twit.social avatar

@viticci Thank you and @johnvoorhees for all the work you put into this. It is the ultimate annual iOS & iPadOS review.

manuel,
@manuel@iosdev.space avatar

@viticci seventeen pages. Wow, that is a lot - especially knowing how well-researched your reviews are 👏

(Did you make it 17 on purpose or is it just a coincidence? 😁)

Really looking forward to enjoying the @club ebook version in a cozy corner with a nice cup of coffee later 🤓

prhayes,

@viticci Federico, thanks again for the effort and knowledge you put into these reviews. This year's review has taken its place alongside all of your other reviews in iBooks and I will begin to read it later once I finish work.

totallyharrison,

@viticci how in the world do I get that Cover Flow widget my man

stefandesu,

@viticci Excited to read it! 🔥

(For some strange reason, this post does NOT show up in my timeline in @ivory, even after boosting it, but I did find it in the Explore section. 🤔)

garretble,

@viticci That header video is slick.

hyperp,

@viticci Slick banner! 👍

This year, I've done something differently with the review:

I've added a brand new chapter all about Apple's efforts in system Intelligence.

Apple is doing a lot of work with on-device machine learning and artificial intelligence that benefits millions of people at scale.

It's time we start giving those features the focus they deserve.

https://www.macstories.net/stories/ios-and-ipados-17-the-macstories-review/8/#intelligence

viticci,
@viticci@macstories.net avatar

The other key theme from the review:

Widgets are everywhere now. They're interactive and permeate iOS – from the Home Screen to multiple flavors of the Lock Screen.

I've tried dozens of third-party widgets for iOS and iPadOS 17, and I rounded up my favorites in the (extensive) Widgets chapter: https://www.macstories.net/stories/ios-and-ipados-17-the-macstories-review/2/#widgets-and-standby

freakinbuttons,

@viticci do you have a favorite stand for standby now?

viticci,
@viticci@macstories.net avatar

The review's intro animation and graphics were done, once again, by @michaelsteeber.

Michael outdid himself this year.

These graphics are my favorite to date. I care about this annual tradition so much, it's important for me to make it look special. Michael delivered once again.

And check out that sick intro video 🔥 https://www.macstories.net/stories/ios-and-ipados-17-the-macstories-review/

@viticci Nice touch or coincidence? 😂🤔

tomk,

@viticci @michaelsteeber These are rendered? Damn those look good!

viticci,
@viticci@macstories.net avatar

And that's it!

I hope you'll enjoy the review as much as I did putting it together. These stories are a labor of passion for me; I feel so grateful to have an audience to share them with.

Have fun reading it and finding all the Easter Eggs I hid within it.

I'll see you next year...

...for my 10th annual iOS review. 👀

@viticci As always, thank you! Getting ready for my yearly favorite read!

JonnyBlueApple,

@viticci 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻

jrholmes,

@viticci Every bit the excellent review of the Apple OSes that we have all come to expect from you over the last decade.

A just discovered tiny change that has inconvenienced me is that text tones are now somehow separate from ringtones. That means that the custom ringtones that I created are not appearing as a valid 'text tone' for email alerts, etc.

gernot,
@gernot@mas.to avatar

@viticci @michaelsteeber So this MagSafe stand… isn’t real?!? 😢

kathrynelrod,

@viticci These images are outstanding.

christianMeyer,

@viticci love that you snuck in some Finch 👀

john,

@viticci “Chickpea and Ham Pizza”

havn,

@viticci
As someone who uses a language (Norwegian) that Apple hasn’t even provided word suggestions for (introduced in iOS 8!), I wonder when we’ll get any of this… 🙃

To those who don’t know our pain: Imagine

  • old autocorrect,
  • no word predictions, and
  • no swipe typing. 😓

Great review as always!

kemayo,
@kemayo@hachyderm.io avatar

@viticci on the storefronts note, I did see it managing a "Place" which might be the same thing. (The other example for the same label I stumbled over is a T-Mobile store in the background of another picture...)

Screenshot of Apple Photos iOS app showing the "place results" panel for a photo of the Ted Drewes Frozen Custard sign

@viticci @club @obsidian @johnvoorhees dying to read it!! But guessing this is a known issue? (I want to read the ebook version of course but can’t sign into the club 😀)
