> pays $45 billion a year for contracts to lock out rivals, signing deals with “Apple, LG, Motorola, and Samsung; major U.S. wireless carriers such as AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon; and browser developers such as Mozilla, Opera, and UCWeb— to secure default status for its general search engine and, in many cases, to specifically prohibit Google’s counterparties from dealing with Google’s competitors.”

@pluralistic So now it's officially confirmed. Mozilla's income is a google payoff? Or do we know how much they paid mozilla? @aral Do you know any more details?

metasieben,

@Toasterson Google pays to be the default search engine, nothing more.
Same deal they have with Apple etc.

@metasieben @Toasterson Just half a billion dollars a year from a surveillance capitalist in exchange for allowing them to profile the people who use your browser by default. I mean, we’ve all done it, right?

Not to mention Mozilla VC, Mozilla AI…

Oh, and if Google were to stop paying Apple that (not defending those hypocrites either, mind you), Apple would still exist tomorrow. If they didn’t pay Mozilla Corporation, it wouldn’t.

But it’s inconsequential, really.
