Meet oct-git, a new #OpenPGP signing and verification tool for use with the #Git distributed version control system:

https://crates.io/crates/openpgp-card-tool-git 🦀

oct-git focuses exclusively on ergonomic use with OpenPGP card-based signing keys

It is designed to be easy to set up, standalone (no long running processes), and entirely hands-off to use (no repeated PIN entry required, by default). It comes with desktop notifications for touch confirmation (if required)

#RustLang #PGP #GnuPG #gpg #Nitrokey #YubiKey

I really hate the new energy requirements that require desktops to auto-suspend.

My main test machine just suspended in the middle of trying to move a 2 TiB partition. Pretty sure my whole install is hosed now.

Not because moving partitions is unsafe but because Linux suspend isn't aware of other forms of activity besides moving a mouse on a screen.

Toasterson,
@Toasterson@chaos.social avatar

@gfxstrand Shouldn't such a move be a copy/delete action? In that case it isn't hosed.

Trying to figure out what to write about illumos is difficult, because for me personally, the entire experience has been pretty terrible from start to finish.

That said, I really don't want to shit on a project that appears to be struggling with commercial support, and frankly, I'm not exactly playing to its strengths.

As I'm using it, its basically still just SVR4 UNIX, and I'm ignoring the advancements based in ZFS, Dtrace, etc.

Toasterson,
@Toasterson@chaos.social avatar

@ncommander Sorry, but I have to call you out here a little bit. There is a very specific reason the arm branch is only advertised to people if they ask. It is very alpha and requires a lot of domain specific knowledge and thus tight collaboration. It is a very unofficial related project to illumos specifically so because we know the build will break. It requires big changes to the system to get a new architecture going. Always has even on debian. At some point debian managed to wrangle 1/n

Toasterson,
@Toasterson@chaos.social avatar

@ncommander gcc into submission and make a multi arch compiler suite. That feat has not yet been replicated in the illumos world. I do not know if any RPM based system has either. Ubuntu may have simply grabbed the recipes and arch may actually have replicated it. I am unaware of the current situation.

2 /n

Toasterson,
@Toasterson@chaos.social avatar

@ncommander illumos ARM is not for beginners and it is not an entry point to experience the OS. It is a passion project by the community. If you want a smooth ride. Please use one of the supported use cases and workflows to start your journey. We always look for more people to write drivers. https://illumos.org/books/wdd/preface.html#preface

And for illumos ARM it is definitely a prerequisite to have done a x86 driver or two.

HT to @wdormann here - somebody has backdoored the open source project XZ which has downstream impacts.

For example, although OpenSSH doesn’t use XZ, Debian patch OpenSSH and introduced a dependency which translates as the XZ changes introducing a sshd authentication bypass backdoor it appears.

One dude bothered to investigate in his free time about why ssh was running slow, so it was caught fairly early - i.e. hopefully before distros started bundling it.

@GossiTheDog That specific dev contributed to wasmtime etc too. So more projects need audits.

While @bagder works on curl's Distro details. I am working on OpenIndiana's curl details page. This should make it easier to handle simple updates where we don't need to touch patches or compile options. And for the cases where we need to coordinate with upstream give us an overview per package and direct links to places.

@gamingonlinux

Is there some ongoing program for retesting of updates for games? The reason why I am asking is that currently Dawn of War 3 is broken due to nonexecutable binaries and a launcher script that does not set LD_PRELOAD properly. That's a sad neglect.

Toasterson,
@Toasterson@chaos.social avatar

@gamingonlinux Yeah that's what it ends up with... Some tracking would be nice though. Some way to let people know it's so fundamentally broken and maybe get a fix at some point.

With apologies to Samuel Taylor Coleridge, we have opened Helios, the illumos distribution that powers the Oxide rack https://github.com/oxidecomputer/helios

Toasterson,
@Toasterson@chaos.social avatar

@ljrk @oxidecomputer AArch64 work is currently done by a community of many illumos people and not Oxide as a Company.

Check here to get started
https://github.com/richlowe/arm64-gate and here for VM/RPI Images. https://downloads.omnios.org/media/braich/

Please not that the illumos community is not just Oxide and there is a lot going on outside of oxide aswell. No need to wait for the company to get your hands on illumos goodies :)

Toasterson,
@Toasterson@chaos.social avatar

@ljrk @oxidecomputer Distributions in illumos land are not the same as with linux. Both and simply distribute easily installable ISO's and packages. Helios is open to allow modification of Oxide racks but you get the same features more tuned to small systems with the Upstream omnios distro.
