adamjcook,

Back in my hometown!

First time since 2018.

adamjcook,

Headed to my new home city of though on .

adamjcook,

Great Hall inside ’s Union Station.

Seems like they may have renovated it recently… not sure.

adamjcook,

really doing it up fancy these days.

Metropolitan Lounge.

goodthinking,
ablackcatstail,

@adamjcook Okay, Imma stand up on my soapbox here for a minute. Amtrak is spending all this money on fancy lounges but their trains are decrepit by comparison. WTF!?

adamjcook,

@ablackcatstail Fair point.

Really fair.

I am not at all a fan of Amtrak’s current state and direction.

But I think that there is some argument that enhancing lounges and stations might build or renew customer interest.

(At least that is the argument being made in terms of the planned renovations to ’s New Center station.)

I certainly do not need this level of fanciness (and was not expecting it), but some might I suppose.

adamjcook,

@ablackcatstail But yeah… train reliability is an enormous issue.

Nothing kills train interest like horror stories of trains stranded or delayed for hours in winter.

Then again, I am not sure Amtrak can unilaterally solve the largest issue on that front - freight prioritization.

So, maybe Amtrak feels like this is the best that they can do at the moment?

Not sure.

Naturally, Wi-Fi does not work on my train now, come to mention it.

ablackcatstail,

@adamjcook Valid argument. I am all about public transportation so it pains me to no end to see how mismanaged and underfunded it is here in the US.

adamjcook,

@ablackcatstail Oh. Indeed.

It’s a goddamn tragedy that both the “Bipartisan” Infrastructure Act and the IRA (Manchin’s Bill, as I like to call it) effectively ignored Amtrak.

Anything less than a total commitment to totally transform passenger rail transportation in this country, in my view, is a commitment to remain unserious about emissions reductions.

And the US is very unserious.

@adamjcook @ablackcatstail What is Amtrak's "direction"? They appear hopelessly aimless to me.

adamjcook,

Whelp.

Stuck for 30-40 minutes just outside of Battle Creek, .

I could not make out what the actual issue is but the Battle Creek station is apparently not clear due to another delayed train and we must wait until it is cleared.

Sounds like a choke point that needs to be fixed.

tylerwalz,

@adamjcook my wife grew up on the west side of Michigan and has always had trouble with that Amtrak route. It’s too bad it is not better.

adamjcook,

On the move.

42-minute delay.

Entering Battle Creek, .

adamjcook,

Only about 15 minutes late!

Pretty good!

EricPaulDennis,

@adamjcook I have a friend who's flying to SF by taking the Amtrack to CHI in a couple weeks, and when I heard that I was like, uh oh.

  • adamjcook,

    @APBBlue Yeah.

    Just documenting the State of Rail in our next of the woods.

    Other than this delay, though, we have been moving like the wind.

    So not all bad. ☺️
