ai6yr,

People keep telling me to watch "Twister", but it's never on TV or free streaming. But, I'm too cheap to "rent" it on Amazon Prime for $3.79. However, it was $2.99 at the local Goodwill. 🤔

@ai6yr it's like the movie version of Storm Chasers on Discovery channel

ai6yr,

LOL I literally just ordered parts for a rotator like this, for satellite tracking... this morning.

Parts list for the SARCNET Mk1b antenna rotator

ai6yr,

Plans to build your own satellite rotator, btw: https://www.sarcnet.org/rotator-mk1.html

ai6yr,

The evil storm chaser vehicles are all outfitted with a Larsen 2m/70cm NMO mount antenna... the same one I have on my vehicle, LOL.

@tiamat271@mastodon.online avatar

@ai6yr Wow! Very cool!

ai6yr,

Continuity error in the cow scene. One second they're driving down a dirt road, then you see a flash of a vehicle passing them.. and it's obvious they're on a two lane road, maybe a freeway.

Vehicle driving the other way, which would be impossible on a one way dirt road. Obviously on pavement.

MsMerope,
@MsMerope@sfba.social avatar

@ai6yr oh yeah... it's a goofy movie; however I find it strangely relaxing.

ai6yr,

Vintage Lodge #7 skillet at Aunt Meg's house, probably.

ai6yr,

Hmm, Dusty and I own the same CB handheld.

ai6yr,

Come to think of it, I also owned that same Hawaiian shirt he is wearing. I wore it so much, it got so ragged that I replaced it. 🤔

ai6yr,

Probably the only reason anyone goes to Wakita, Oklahoma is Twister, I imagine. There's a "Twister The Movie Museum" https://earth.google.com/web/search/wakita,+oklahoma/

ai6yr,

I see the SFX crew raided a few hotel ice machines for the hail, LOL.

mybarkingdogs,

@ai6yr There's actually a tornado movie with WORSE acting and SFX (as well as some awful safety advice, and more): The Night of the Twisters.

It's also a case of "the movie of the book, and the movie really sucked," because the book was essentially a roman a clef of a real event but just with fictional characters. The movie was entirely fictionalized and... suffered for it, a lot

jbaggs,

@ai6yr You've never seen hail cubes?

ai6yr,

@jbaggs 😂

brewcitychaser,
@brewcitychaser@mastodon.social avatar

@ai6yr They basically ground up giant chunks of ice and launched them from a tractor trailer lol. Great tidbit here on it from the making of doc: https://youtu.be/anUmbKa6mhk?t=1001

ai6yr,

First aid tip: a head wound like that would result in profuse, profuse bleeding. As in soak-the-room-with-blood, horror-movie-bleeding ;-)

@ai6yr This thread reminded me that I still have the DVD for this film, but then realized I no longer have a computer that has a DVD drive.

ai6yr,

LOL, realized this in the morning. The "bad guy" storm chasers, alas, were killed by a ham radio tower. Ham radio tower safety is very, very important. Amerite AME25 tower section.

MsMerope,
@MsMerope@sfba.social avatar

@ai6yr or, were they killed. by one man's hubris? 🤔

ai6yr,

@MsMerope LOL

ai6yr,

At least one real ham radio operator was technical advisor on this, KC5TQI, Martin Lisius: "Martin Lisius, "...cinematographer, producer, director and founder of Prairie Pictures and StormStock, a 25-year old stock footage brand specializing in weather.... Martin produced several television programs relating to severe weather including "Chasing the Wind" (1991) and "The Chasers of Tornado Alley" (1995). He co-produced “StormWatch” for the National Weather Service... Martin worked as a technical advisor on the 1996 Warner Bros. blockbuster movie "Twister" and appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show with the cast and crew" https://speakerpedia.com/speakers/martin-lisius

@ai6yr
Does the NMO mount infer any improved capabilities over other kinds of mounts? If so, what?

ai6yr,

@trumpresistance NMO mount is what is used, standard on law enforcement and fire vehicles in this part of California (and elsewhere). It provides far better ground plane contact with the vehicle, and is weather proof (if installed correctly), with the coax routed internally under the headliner. It's also interchangeable: there are NMO antennas for every band, allowing for mix-match antenna installations. It solves the where-to-I-run-the-coax issue that magmounts cause, as well, and don't have the paint scratching/antennas falling off issue of magmount.

trumpresistance,
@trumpresistance@newsie.social avatar

@ai6yr
Perfect, always wondered. I have one I ‘accumulated’ at a swap fest but it is gathering cobwebs as I don’t do mobile (yet). I will keep it!

ai6yr,

@trumpresistance The biggest downside to NMO is it requires a special NMO mount hole saw and you have to put a (large) hole in your vehicle in the right place. That tends to be an issue for hams who lease their vehicle, or who frequently change what vehicle they are driving.

trumpresistance,
@trumpresistance@newsie.social avatar

@ai6yr Ugh, maybe ok on my old Astro van.

ai6yr,

@trumpresistance I did my own install on my own vehicle, and later 8 others. It's not too hard, but it requires getting over the mental block of "drilling large hole in vehicle" LOL.

    @ai6yr that’s a solid $3 dvd, but no more than a .99 online rental. Good call, and enjoy - teenage me made out during that one, too 😂

    ai6yr,

    @donkeyherder 🤔 I'm pretty sure you spent a lot more time making out as a teenager than I did... (LOL... absolutely sure, I spent WAY too much time in my parents basement with computers instead, ha ha).

    exador23,
    @exador23@m.ai6yr.org avatar

    @ai6yr @donkeyherder I too spent a lot of time in the basement. lol.

    Only instead of computers, which weren't widely available then, I was desoldering parts from unrepairable TVs found behind repair shops. Then breadboarding them to make the projects in Popular Electronics.

    @douglasvb@mastodon.social avatar

    @ai6yr @BakerRL75 @WXFanatic if you can't handle Twister, you're going to hate my current favorite pirate fantasy sitcom romance show "Our Flag Means Death" 😅 and you probably HATE Star Trek Lower Decks which I think might be my favorite Star Trek series (which is saying a lot considering I grew up on TNG, DS9, and VOY).

    BakerRL75,
    @BakerRL75@m.ai6yr.org avatar

    @ai6yr @WXFanatic Obviously a ham radio operator let the “Twister” Crew borrow the rig…

    k0in,

    @BakerRL75 @WXFanatic @ai6yr I never tried to tune up a tube rig in a mobile before.

    ai6yr,

    @k0in @BakerRL75 @WXFanatic Well, really it's a hybrid, only the output stages are tubes (3 of them). The TS-520 was actually marketed as mobile radios for installation in your vehicle. I do think you'd need a Buick the size of Manhattan to fit it under the dash, however.

    k0in,

    @ai6yr @BakerRL75 @WXFanatic Not that I was ever good at tuning up on the desktop either! The simultaneous tune/load controls really flummoxed me!

    ai6yr,

    @k0in @BakerRL75 @WXFanatic I have a few tube rigs... basically, tune for noise on the "DRIVE" control (matches the capacitance to the antenna system), and the tune to maximize power out on a meter. Might have to go back and forth if you're not good at hearing the noise (more noise = better tuned to the antenna).

    k0in,

    @ai6yr @BakerRL75 @WXFanatic
    Yeah, my dad had an HW-101, and my first HF rig was a Swan 500 I picked up at a hamfest. Never did get too much out of it, which was probably a good thing, since I lived in an apartment at the time.
