I was disappointed that I couldn't get my combat robot, Footloose, ready in time for the Robobrawl tournament last month. However, I found a plastic antweight tournament in Southern California that takes place today and will finally get a chance to put Footloose to the test. Had to modify the weapon, as there is no metal allowed here. It's a single elimination tournament, so it could be over quickly, but there are lots of bots here and it should be a fun event regardless.

OK, this is a walkthrough of the weird VNC thing uses for connecting accounts. Again, I'm not saying there is anything necessarily wrong with doing this. I am saying there are way better ways to do this. And the clipboard button workaround is very funny.

@film_girl I only have my kids use Safari on their iPads/iMac because of the screen time and parental controls deep integration. Otherwise for the rest of the family it’s Chrome or Firefox lol

My brain decided to bring up this memory for no reason today. Cereal box records. Back in the day, kid cereals would add cardboard records on the back of their boxes. You could cut them out and play them on any normal record player. The grooves were made with thin plastic and songs were pretty short.

Sound was horrible. But fun.

Windows Terminal seems to have its own font renderer, and sometimes it's just plain worse than what's built in.

Compare these two prompts from CONHOST (darker, left) and Windows Terminal (lighter, right). Same text, same font, but the Windows Terminal rendering frequently gets the shape and size of the diagonal blocks wrong, which causes artifacts like color bleed and/or misaligned edges. Worse, which artifacts you see changes with the font size.

@bradwilson its been a bit of an issue but I think they’ve tried to fix quite a bit of them- I’ve been following along https://visualstudiomagazine.com/articles/2022/02/07/windows-terminal-1-13.aspx and I today have no issues. I do use the JetBrains Mono nerd font

@bradwilson I wrote out a whole reply but I think you deleted your reply so my draft is gone. Joys of mastodon sometimes. But anyway I do still see the option in my build - settings - rendering - use new text renderer. I have it on and it works for me. But obviously it’s still not perfect. You might find open issues on the GitHub. Was just trying to say they’re working on it still and it’s got quirks for sure. But I’ve been able to get it working at least for me :-/

@bradwilson no I don’t think so. I mainly learned about terminal stuff from Scott H’s blogs and videos and back when that stuff first came out figuring out nerd fonts alone was a pain. And then discovering Oh-My-Posh and wondering why the lines and glyphs were off, etc- it’s been a journey. I have no idea why mine is working; I can only guess it’s a combination of things. I don’t have hidpi display, maybe that’s a diff?

@csilverman I would say on because of the “off” state blending/matching surroundings. But yeah I think this sort of thing needs a non-color based indicator like underline or bold etc

My 11yo daughter, who normally isn’t into video games, discovered Return to Monkey Island on Xbox and played through it, enjoying it.

I then introduced her to Day of the Tentacle (remastered) and she plowed through that in a day and said she loved it too! The old gamer in me is pleased. Wonder what other delightful classic games she’ll enjoy.

@ai6yr if using 5ghz, wood/walls are much worse than they were with 2.4- also check manufacturer’s manual for what antenna pattern/array is coming out of it, to properly orientate it
