There are currently about 3 million E-bikes in the Netherlands. The total yearly electricity consumption of these E-bikes is about equal to the annual power generated of one offshore wind turbine.
The number of E-bikes has increased significantly in recent years. Offshore wind turbines have become bigger as well. As a coincidence, the similarity is true for a number of years now.

@BM_Visser It's about the lost health benefits, not the electricity consumption. If only the e-bike would massively lure commuters out of their car. It does not. They might give up on public transport, which makes the whole public transport network collapse like a house of cards. And once the e-bike is in the household, it is also used for small distances. No exercise at all anymore. It is a health hazard!

@BM_Visser

Does that mean, that secretly at night these ebikes go out and build wind turbines?

CorineHamer,

@BM_Visser en wat was het energieverbruik geweest als al deze fietskilometers autokilometers op fossiele brandstof waren geweest?

fix_it_bob,

@BM_Visser So, is it the wind turbines that cause the e-bikes or the other way round?

@BM_Visser

A perfect illustration...

how energy efficiency (e-bike)

and renewable energy (wind turbines)

work hand in hand to make fossil fuels (e.g. gasoline) obsolete.

@oddly@toot.re avatar

@BM_Visser how is the energy consumption of those e-bikes measured? Or is this actually the estimated available capacity of all bikes put together?

@BM_Visser Many of these bikes have batteries from China of dubious origin. Better to get a regular bike without a battery.

mpbontenbal,

@BM_Visser Electric engines for bicycles have an efficiency >90%, where humans reach around 21%. So e-bikes consume way less energy than human powered ones.

nellie_m,

@BM_Visser

great info about energy use, and please use a few hashtags so the on can enjoy it, too!

@BM_Visser Great post. Puts many things into perspective. Thanks.
