It almost feels a bit exotic but - no, I never had an account on that “birdsite”, even though I like birds. Simply came here and loved it! When the server I first signed up on was shut down, I set up this little instance of one.
Chicken keeper, dog lover, photo enthusiast without decent camera, would-be-smallholder-if-only-I-had-more-time, ex-beekeeper, seed saver, writer, publisher. Curious, enthusiastic, believe in the power of kindness.

people on screereaders? for sure.

nellie_m,

@LoganFive

I’m not, but a lot of my friends here are. Like for example that awesome musician, Andre Louis from London. (follow him if you don’t already, lots of fun stuff, music wise)

Here’s a thread he posted a while ago and while it’s not specifically about emojis and symbols, but usernames with cutesy fonts, it’s essentially the same thing.

With the arrival of Meta/Threads on the Fediverse, I really hate that Mastodon doesn’t have options for “boost within the poster’s followers only” and “allow replies from the poster’s followers only”. This would help immensely with safety and moderation.

In the meantime, I will have to censor myself much more, and this makes me sad.

nellie_m,

@Em0nM4stodon

I don’t really understand your post.

If you set the visibility of a post to followers only, only your followers will see it, right?

And in such posts I’ve seen no boost option for followers. They can only favourite or reply.

Or is that not what you’re worried about?

Looking forward to my get-back-on-the-bike trip to and from the library tomorrow again. It's only a short ride, but managed to find a mostly car-free route, and at least it FEELS like I'm doing something concrete to reduce my reliance on driving (even if only symbolic).

nellie_m,

@ai6yr

It’s really good to start with short distances that will take you to somewhere enjoyable 🙂 Feelings are super important. They’ll inform your future decisions around this activity - making things fun for yourself means you’ll be much more likely to do them again in the future.

It’s called “conditioned emotional response” and a playful feeling is one of the best to keep you motivated. Good trainers working with non-human animals always keep that in mind 🙂

  1. Vote for climate. Demonstrate for climate. Write to your representatives about climate. Call for better laws around climate: for a less car centered city infrastructure. For taxes on fossil fuels including ships and planes. For bans on exaggerated pollutors like superyachts and SUVs. For more and better education around climate to counter misinformation.

Politicians need support for changes like these.

I really hope we can avoid the quite disappointing meta flamewar that happened last time this was discussed at large on here. I know I will do my best to be more cautious with words.

In the end, some instances will decide to federate with Threads, some won't. And that's fine.

We can choose our own adventure, and let others choose theirs.

Let's respect each others' choices, even if we feel strongly about ours.

@actuallyautistic #aspergers #autism As Christmas holidays approach, I am worried about several things.

  1. I have a busy and stressful job, but one in which I have a lot of control over things, a lot of routine, and an office I can hide in. I am worried about the drastic change in routine (or loss of it) and loss of control.

  2. I love my wife, and kids to the moon and back, but they are unpredictable, and I end up apologising 24/7, and feeling guilty for being rubbish. Also they feel pressure to be happy knowing we don't get time together, which adds to tension and stress.

  3. My family (parents and extended family) are not close, but my wifes are, and Christmas means gatherings, party games etc. And I feel guilty about avoiding them.

  4. I feel obligued to be a festive jolly person to everyone as I do like Christmas and do not want to appear rude.

I have never really spoken about this till now, but I find it the hardest part of my year, and it takes so much energy to mask all the time. What I would love would be to hide away from everything, but there is so much expectation etc.

Sorry for the long rant but thanks for being a safe space to get this out!
:infinity_rainbow: :octo_sad: :blobcatpensive:

nellie_m,

@aspiedan @actuallyautistic

you’re not alone. I think it’s a fairly common problem among us - the amount of socialising with people we’re related to but not necessarily friends with; the immense expectations; and as you say, the feeling of being exposed and unsafe because we get catapulted out of our routines that provide a feeling of security.

Stay safe and create little breaks in between, even if it’s just a trip to the bathroom or a short walk outside.

Mastodon Tip

Seeing some newer folks saying that it is hard know who to follow.

This tool, Followgraph for Mastodon >>> https://followgraph.vercel.app/ to the rescue!

Followgraph will provide you with all the follows of the people you follow.

What? OK, so say you have found a few accounts that interest you. Run Followgraph and you will see and be able to follow all of their follows ranked in order of how many are shared.

Then add some these accounts and run it again.

Introduction is: "Whenever I mention my feelings on ABA, someone always asks me for alternatives to ABA."

https://neurodivergentrebel.substack.com/p/alternatives-to-aba-if-not-aba-then

I really want to know why people think that is a valid question?
ABA is not about helping the person be themselves or have a better life, but to try to “convert” them to be more like other people to make those other people feel more comfortable with their beliefs.

I guess you’re speaking from a US-American perspective. Is that so?

If so, I’d like to add a European aspect to the female side or war trauma. Think Bucha.

There was a huge and deep trauma in many surviving European women after the war, in addition to having been on their own with kids in the midst of bombings, cold and hungry. Their stories fill volumes, and most remained untold.

It's wonderful to have finally found my people. Been looking for y'all all my life.

Hi Uair, welcome and thanks for the follow! I don't know what you mean by "group" but yes, this online community has been amazing for me, too. It's really like finding one's people 💛

There are some good hashtags to follow, like , and also a pretty active group on gup.pe.

We've had so many interesting discussions, sometimes lively, but only very rarely did I feel the need to block someone.

Great to have you on board!

Saw a toot I wanted to boost, but no image description. Sad. :blobcatcry2:

Scrolled through the replies, someone already provided the description. Rad. :blobcathappy:

nellie_m,

@rysiek

that’s nice. I sometimes do that, too. Only trouble is, due to how Mastodon works, not everyone gets to see all comments. For example, I’m on an instance of one. I often only see a popular post without its comments.

So it’s a good idea to copy such a description and edit the original post so it contains it. I imagine it’s not really great to read a long line of comments, hoping for a description and not knowing whether there is one, while not yet knowing what those comments are about.

I've just boosted the thread where they live. I recommend a browse through the replies, there is a fine range of pets in non-festive and festive form in there. We had cats, dogs, birds, bunnies... it's lovely.

Still trying to figure out who in my family is neurodivergent and how.
Seems like there is a pattern emerging: If both parents are neurodivergent, chances for the kids to be is at almost 100%. If only one parent is, chances seem to be about 50/50.
Anyone know if there are actual studies on that or is there just not enough data from past generations?

nellie_m,

@btaroli @looneybyron @pathfinder @actuallyautistic

no, and it's actually the other way round: if it's not recessive, in other words, dominant, it can be selected against very easily.

If a gene is recessive, it's very hard to get rid of unless you have genetic tests for it. (example: hens laying eggs with a fishy smell. That's a recessive gene defect affecting an enzyme, it's a simple Mendelian trait, and pretty much impossible to get rid of in a flock. I think they may have blood tests now).

JohnBloor, to random

There are little things that make the Mastodon experience so good.

Like when I click on a person's name or a post, after I've looked at it and press back to come back to the main feed, it takes me exactly where I was before (unlike some other shitty social media where you just get completely different stuff when you go back).

nellie_m,

@jake4480 @JohnBloor

yes, my app does that, too, and I like it (I never even knew it could be different!!!)

Another thing I like about this particular app (Toot! for iOS) is that it changes the background colour of a post I liked to a more bluish hue. So ideally, my whole home timeline is coloured after I read it 🙂

nellie_m,

@jake4480 @JohnBloor

oh yes, dark mode here, too! Just a little bit on the blue side. Here’s a screenshot:

nellie_m,

@jake4480 @JohnBloor

gosh, that’s pretty bold type! Hard to read for me - I chose an app theme with a grey background as I find such hard contrasts difficult (autistic sensory sensitivity).

Would be interesting to see screenshots of all the different apps in comparison! The emoji icons look very different across platforms, too.

So it seems that from 80 million streams on Spotify, an artist earns twelve dollars.

https://mstdn.ca/@msquebanh/111502465987161128

Today is Bandcamp Friday. Today the company doesn’t take any revenue - whatever you pay goes straight to the artists.

Do have a look whether your favourite musicians are on there.

I am feeling called out by the top half of this @actuallyautistic

nellie_m,

@gamambel @StrassenKatze @actuallyautistic @Zumbador

So if I can chime in at this point: my impression is that the chart at the top of this thread doesn't transport what it wants to say very well. The most important lines ("misinterpreted as..") are rather inconspicuous, colour-wise.

What they say is: "The autistic experience is that no matter how you react, it is seen as wrong."

And that definitely IS our experience. This is where non-autistic people could simply listen, take in and accept.

Pro tip for people seeking to understand things:

  • ask questions first.

(hint: introductory statements like „self-diagnosis of mental disorders is worthless“ don’t come across as very open-minded. Especially if they aren’t backed up by scientific data. And they don’t come across as kind, either.)

Here’s a collection of answers to the questions you didn’t ask; studies and all.
