@futurebird I already lost. 😔 I confused a hex with a heavy hex. Better luck next year.

@Sibshops

Don't give up. (though, that is a pretty obvious error, come on man) I'm certain if you construct some flash cards you won't screw up again. Don't bolt from a challenge over one little twist up! You can wrench victory back!

As we always say: Righty tighty, lefty loosie, friend!

@futurebird @Sibshops Unless you’re putting on bicycle pedals, then anything goes 😄

I like the Spanish version:
”La derecha oprime y la izquierda libera." The right oppresses and the left liberates. 😉

I feel like the threading is too fine for the size of this nut.

    Somehow this thread managed to get kinky anyways despite my best intentions.

    @futurebird @nuncio Now I'm wondering if there is an engineering guide that covers this. Probably material-dependent.

    Edit: this guide says fine threads give better clamping force and vibration-resistance, but take longer to install. https://mechanicalelements.com/understanding-bolt-choice/

    The threading looks kind of similar to the frangible nuts used to hold down the Space Shuttle before lift off! :D

    This is the correct answer.

    Wenn ich solche Grafiken sehe, muss ich immer an dieses großartige Tafelwerk denken 😁.
    Die Qualität des Bildes ist leider nicht optimal, den Ursprung dieses wundervollen Machwerks könnte ich leider noch nicht recherchieren.

    Sabberkatze,

    @futurebird
    And again with the english Version

    When I see graphics like this, I always think of this great panel 😁.
    Unfortunately, the quality of the picture is not ideal and I have not yet been able to research the origin of this wonderful work of art.

    @futurebird the ones that are hard to find in home improvement centers are those designed for tracks. Like t-slot or mitter nuts (used in tools like circular saws, routers etc to screw hold down bolts. Or hammer nuts for fastening to extruded aluminum frames after the frame is built (can be used with tracks too)

    Hammer nut. Can be inserted in a track from the opening, instead of from the side. Edges of wider base are angled so they lock in place once tightened (rotating in the process)

    waweic,

    @f_dion @futurebird The nut that's hard to find is always the one you need

    f_dion,
    @f_dion@mastodon.online avatar

    @waweic @futurebird hehe, true. For automotive, i’ve been able to find what i need, typically. Except if i need Titanium or Inconel.

    @f_dion @waweic @futurebird Inconel, now there’s a name I haven’t heard in a long time…
    (I no longer work in industrial/nuclear maintenance/operation)

    f_dion,
    @f_dion@mastodon.online avatar

    @c0dec0dec0de @waweic @futurebird N9 series of hemi 4 cylinders (N9 used in various Talbot, Chrysler, simca, matra murena, matra F2, Peugeot 505 turbo gas, Citroen BX P etc) used inconel studs and nuts for the exhaust on the 505 T due to Garrett turbo. Imagine finding the parts in the US...

    c0dec0dec0de,
    @c0dec0dec0de@hachyderm.io avatar

    @f_dion @waweic @futurebird huh, I was under the impression that Inconel was too pricey for consumer products. (We didn’t cover material cost, just what the materials in the plant were and why)

    For bikes only there exist a limited fix set of nuts. Some with caps and mostly special e.g. the one for 3 different valves and other outlets. But for bikes keep it in a different little container.

    Great chart!
    But of course they left off the important part for each nut: “Which aisle, cabinet, and drawer is each of these located in?”🤣

    TruthSandwich,

    @futurebird

    I am deeply disappointed by the lack of any meaningful distinction between slotted and castle nuts!

    Nuts and bolts, pins and screw, nails… pretty much all fasteners. I was a millwright and familiar with all. What really disappoints me was/ is that it was these branches of industry that first discovered and have used the business of monopoly to sell their products individually rather than by bulk. By placing fasteners in plastic sealed boxes they have puluted our air, seas, and landfills with their greed to make excessive profits.
    Disgusting waste produced purposely.
