i keep being asked questions along the lines of "now that crypto's dead, what are you going to focus on next?"

reminds me of when people stop taking antibiotics as soon as they start to feel better

molly0xfff,
@molly0xfff@hachyderm.io avatar

seeing headlines like this helps solidify my opinion that the reports of crypto's death are greatly exaggerated

reputable media outlets have learned absolutely nothing from the last go-round

deilann,

@molly0xfff i recently heard that the blockchain is the solution to the problems with academic journals and you could invest into its coin--

well - what's in it for them if they learn? Fewer clicks. What's in it for them if they play along with the hype and make the hype bigger? More clicks.

So...?

float13,

@molly0xfff

There was a particularly hilarious (though horribly misguided) interview on BBC World Service yesterday that went somethiing like this:

[Alleged journalist, unironically]: Blockchain has the potential to revolutionize blah blah blah tell us about potential benefits of blockchain?

Blockchain paid spokesperson: Yes, the blockchain has many benefits that are numerous and have the potential to revolutionize many things

It was like ChatGPT didn't do its homework interviewing itself...

@molly0xfff "hit $100,000 by end-2024"

I would like to ask a follow-up question about whether they meant per bitcoin, or total market cap.

lp0_on_fire,

@paulchurch, that was my first thought too – no, I tell a lie, my second (my first was to convert that into £). I do hope that it's the latter…

bapril,

@molly0xfff that will depend on how many rug-pulls take place between now and then.

theluddite,

@molly0xfff

The end state of the internet, once humans are gone, will just be a few battery powered servers infected with bitcoin mining malware pointlessly adding to the blockchain and trying to infect each other.

mxtthxw,
@mxtthxw@mxtthxw.art avatar

@molly0xfff well Goldman Sachs is still operational after all these years, don’t see why crypto should be any different tbh.

stribika,

@molly0xfff This wasn't the first cycle and it won't be the last.

TorontoWill,

@molly0xfff Certainly there will be more grifts and speculative bubbles in the future, the question is just what shape they'll take.

I think crypto is too radioactive to attract retail money, and that it is no longer the path of least resistance, even if BTC keeps going up. The regulatory crackdown is crippling the exchanges where the gambling happens, and retail sentiment around the derivative investment products (like NFTs) is at an all time low. The scam needs a new coat of paint.

@TorontoWill @molly0xfff i'm waiting for the unholy marriage of "chatGPT in the blockchain"

I agree on both points but not because of the second.

Crypto hasn't really begun, look at all the false starts of AI since the 1980's.

Blockchain tech isn't good enough but p2p will change that IMO.

Things will move fast with and in tandem. But not federation, instead using peer-to-peer without servers providers.

services will provide the use cases for to get going.

@molly0xfff Media outlets seem more dedicated to words (copy) than to truth.

james_inthe_box,

@molly0xfff I'm hoping it goes away....cryptocurrencies literally fuel the ransomware economy.....I can't count the amount of people in my feeds that have had their wallets drained....so much loss and damage.

Gorba,

@molly0xfff I increasingly get the feeling most major media stories about anything that can be purchased by a retail investor are actually advertising

raineer,

@molly0xfff I love the fact it’s 2023 and the world hasn’t figured out that stories like this run when a single rich dude needs a price to go up. It’s like we aren’t even trying.

mrgl,

@molly0xfff who's gonna eat his dick this time?

And he better do it, the last guy wimped out and then was killed by THEM.

walruslifestyle,

@molly0xfff do any of these outlets ever suffer negative consequences for their crypto boosterism? there's nothing to learn if there's no negative reinforcement signal.

claudius,

@molly0xfff well.. it could.

It could reach 10 MILLION, technically.

It just won't.

But that doesn't generate clicks and ad revenue.

@molly0xfff Media outlets can post any crazy thing as long as they format the title like “{some nonsense} says {a random person}”

lorentz,

@molly0xfff Is it that they learned nothing, or that they learned that making these sorts of claims generates clicks and views?

pvdpinball,

@molly0xfff it has been 20 years since the US invasion of Iraq and there are STILL people buying Iraqi dinar believing that someday a magical “revaluation” compared to the dollar will happen and they’ll be rich. It’s very similar to crypto; a decentralized ponzi like thing borne of the internet but with no centralized actor.

nebulousmenace,

@molly0xfff ... I hoped there was some wonderful news I missed. Alas.

darwinrz,

@molly0xfff A calming of the world is a good thing. The more stable and “boring” it becomes, the better for the entire space.

Crypto has thus far been marred by hype, opportunism, and the resulting instability.

I want to see the space continue to thrive. So part of me believes that the less I hear about it, the better.

laimis,
@laimis@mstdn.social avatar

@molly0xfff I see this a lot from web3isgoinggreat followers. If the only exposure you get is that, you get the impression that the sector is imploding.

Most don't realize how much money has entered that space and it has no where to go but continue to finance crypto projects.

Also a lot of crypto heads made for many unimaginable amounts of money in 2020-2021 ride, again, financing their further adventures.

At the moment I can't imagine what "it's over for crypto" looks like.

laimis,
@laimis@mstdn.social avatar

@molly0xfff one way to keep up with activity without having to listen to their nonsense but for the sake of just getting an idea of what is going and what is top of mind for them is to subscribe to podcasts like Bankless.

Those guys are obsessed and don't listen to their content, but just look at the show subjects and show notes. You will get the idea what the crypto community cares and works on the most.

molly0xfff,
@molly0xfff@hachyderm.io avatar

@laimis i do 🙂 i've been on the pod once, actually.

laimis,
@laimis@mstdn.social avatar

@molly0xfff oh, my apologies, I should have made it more clear, my comment was meant for people reading your post and looking through this thread that might not be as familiar with the space.

You don't need any advice on how to find what's going on in crypto world, lol.
