Mark Rober is at it again.👍🏿

Either he's the single greatest detective and criminal justice mind on earth or... SFPD is incentivized to not reduce these car break-ins.🤷🏿‍♂️

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=iWWWyG5ZwG8

Everyone knows:

  • which vehicles are targeted
  • what streets they're targeted on
  • about the stolen licence plates
  • where the stolen goods are fenced

We all pretend not to know these things though.🤷🏿‍♂️

He didn't name the neighbourhood that ultimately fenced his laptop, but the Dim Sum there is lit! 👍🏿😋

You can't solve SF car break-ins with technology. Because we already know where the stolen goods are ending up.

SFPD already has dystopia levels of access to front door cameras. They already have victims with live Tile and AirTag data. That's not the issue, at all.

Chesa basically did what Mark Rober we just did, but with less technical know-how. Chesa just used a pair of binoculars and patience! And he found the same exact things. Chesa busted a fencing ring. So we... recalled him. 🤡

@mekkaokereke My sense from the video is that the spot where things were fenced was basically just a street-market / flea market?

IE: buyers could pretend to not know the items were stolen? Is there a good way to shut that down?

@kilpatds

Other than making basic necessities affordable? No, I don't think so. They markets just move. People are going to survive.

What would you do if your baby needed diapers, formula, and Pedialyte, and the cheapest legit versions of those items were at least 3X what you could afford?

And you knew that buying them off the street, prices were lower because they were some combo of expired, imported without paying taxes, counterfeit, slightly defective, and in some cases, yes, stolen.

@mekkaokereke had my stuff stolen on a work trip recently in Millipedes, and the cops were lying to me to my face about why they can't stop it. One claimed judges were afraid of getting sued for approving a warrant

@mekkaokereke did you see the Channel 5 interview recently? https://youtu.be/lLGRGZTk51w

@Greg Watching now. 5 mins in and it's on point so far.

mekkaokereke,
@mekkaokereke@hachyderm.io avatar

@Greg That was surprisingly good. That covered so many of the issues around the car break-ins that most mainstream coverage misses.

@Greg @mekkaokereke the channel 5 series on sf has been really great. The latest on harm reduction had a link to a gofundme at the end of the video. I’m super pleased that they’ve smashed that goal https://gofund.me/8fbcba77

@Greg @mekkaokereke I am a big fan of his whole SF series. I agree with you, he's taking what he's doing much more seriously. I am here for it!

@doggojones

Yup.

"Police are using bait cars, undercover officers, increased patrols, and investigating organized crime rings which the city said are committing a lot of car burglaries."

All things Chesa asked for and was denied, so he did it himself.

Marc Rober's vehicles are essentially hand-rolled bait cars.

    From what I can tell, he's a genuinely good dude! I have no issues with him at all.

    And most of his videos show that package thieves and car smash and grab people aren't who Nextdoor thinks they are (🙋🏿‍♂️).

    In this video, it doesn't look like he parked his car at Fisherman's Wharf a lot (which is where a disproportionate number of SF car break-ins happen). In fairness I did see one that was clearly Palace of Fine arts, and that score looked exactly like most SF break-ins.

    @mekkaokereke @thepoliticalcat I bought them for my 9 now 10 year old and he has absolutely loved them. He's learned a ton and we enjoyed working on them and talking about them together. I've ordered a second year to continue. You will not be disappointed.

    @mekkaokereke Disappointingly few of the thieves got glitter bombed. Why is there a 15s delay with announcement on that?
