Achievement unlocked. Went to the farmer's market on a combo of bus and bike. Learned many lessons...

@ai6yr I feel your pain and have a pretty good idea of what section of bikelane was taken over by parked semis... lol

I wish TOT had better frequency and service, good on you for taking it! For me with my mega ebike, its either walk + bus, or bike only. Sucks that to get to my nearest stop I have to walk on Lynn over the 101 to get to the mall, not an easy trek. I do want to try taking my bike up to Moorpark train station via VCTC busses sometime.

May 17th apparently is Bike To Work Day.

Thousand Oaks Transit: ๐Ÿšฒ๐ŸšVentura County transit operators are celebrating Bike to Work Day by offering free rides to anyone boarding with a bike on May 17! Seamlessly connect your bike route by riding any bus within Ventura County for free. http://goventura.org/free

technotion,
@technotion@urbanists.social avatar

@ai6yr not just VCTC busses! You can bring your bike on the bus to the Moorpark or Camarillo train stations and ride Metrolink for free ALL WEEK as long as you have your bike! Go explore some new trails after your commute!

I have been an avid watcher of ride along YouTube content for a while now, and I am 100% not surprised that the NHTSA is launching their investigation. Through videos on JJRickโ€™s and Kevin Chenโ€™s YT channels (go check them out) the cars have made a few traffic violations and bend many rules of the road. The most glaring was seeing a Waymo vehicle make a โ€œPittsburgh leftโ€ in San Francisco, not yielding to the cars waiting or the pedestrian on the sidewalk with intent to cross. (1/2)

If s are going to be integrated into urban life, we need to be designing for them in future streetscapes and plans.

The amount of people that donโ€™t understand why a robot shouldnโ€™t be allowed to bend human laws is astonishing. I feel that the current movement is very car pilled, focusing on speed and speed alone in the deployment of vehicles onto our streets. AV companies and the city of SF have failed the public in deploying AVs properly, but we can work to fix that. (2/2)

OMFG DED

the stage blocking on this is just phenomenal

technotion,
@technotion@urbanists.social avatar

@gobborg @gsuberland check out this POV from previous year's competition, so many cool details for stage production nerds. Besides the insane speeds they wheel things on and off stage, one of the technicians developed an application to spike the stage using the LED floor, so they nail the set placement every time. You can see the graphics on the floor illustrating where they should place the set pieces.

Maybe @ai6yr ?

Mfw I ask the Chipotle worker for corn salsa and she reaches for the sour cream so I say "corn salsa" 3 more times louder each repetition until she dumps a gallon of sour cream all over my bowl

@BikeyBike how entertaining that the only other post with that tag is @ai6yr , we need more Sour Cream on the fedi!

I'm really starting to get into editing and now have the desire to organize an editing event in which one or two people are boots on the ground, livestreaming their perspective walking around an area in a Discord call while others are editing and adding features to the map as they are reported from the people walking around.

Seems like the best way to get pedestrian amenities - stairs, benches, bins, emergency phones, bike parking, etc - effectively and accurately.

Great new research from the Terner center finds that "affordable" housing in California is only as affordable as those that populate a given region. Their newly proposed inclusive affordability measure seems like a good idea to consider moving forward.

Read the full study here: https://ternercenter.berkeley.edu/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Affordability-for-Whom-May-2024-.pdf

technotion,
@technotion@urbanists.social avatar

From the study as a summary:
"In this paper, we present a new approach to measuring housing affordabilityโ€”one that seeks to provide a better indicator of what counties in California are affordable, and for whom. Specifically, we propose a new inclusive measure that considers whether a location is affordable not to those who live there, but rather to those who might potentially live there."

Additionally, they released this interactive web tool alongside the study: https://ternercenter.berkeley.edu/affordability-for-whom.html

Neat, our city government has a committee with two bicycling improvements for our city on the agenda for their meeting tomorrow--bicycle lanes and "clear parking zones" to make it easier to see cyclists and pedestrians. I will have to try to remember to Zoom in... https://toaks.primegov.com/Portal/Meeting?meetingTemplateId=7644

technotion,
@technotion@urbanists.social avatar

@ai6yr In addition, item B is about the new 2025 active transportation plan. We need to be taking radical initiatives on biking in the community, and this is the doc that guides that.

Unfortunately, based on my observations and research, only 10/31 (27%) bicycle improvement recommendations in the 2019 ATP have been completed in the 5 years since it was proposed. Very disappointing performance from the city and I will be voicing my hope for better work to be done in the future.

technotion,
@technotion@urbanists.social avatar

@ai6yr Nice, looking forward to hearing you speak!

Since you're local, thought you would be interested in seeing the improvement recommendations from the 2019 ATP. These are all corridors and intersections I ride (sometimes frequently) and always wish there was better infra. Im sure you feel the same. Frustrating to know this has been recommended since 2019 and we're just moving at a snails pace on even these very basic, not extreme changes.

I will be advocating for more progress this cycle.

achievement unlocked. This cyclist went to the market. This cyclist did not stay home. This cyclist bought arugula and butter. This cyclist put it on the new rack and pedaled (wee! wee! wee!) uphill all the way home.

@ai6yr for me, it definitely would have been wheeze wheeze wheeze wheeze all the way home...

Running errands with my bike was one of my favorite activities in TO, makes the activity fun again!

In case you haven't heard, schools are set to start using natural language processing toolsโ€”computersโ€”to automatically score some standardised tests (STAAR).

But no worries, it also assigns itself a confidence score that might send it to humans to rescore if it's too low (how opaque will that scoring be?).

But surely the STAAR tests can't be that important? "The commissioner can appoint a conservator to oversee campuses and school districts. State law also allows the commissioner to suspend and replace elected school boards with an appointed board of managers. If a campus receives failing grades for five years in a row, the commissioner is required to appoint a board of managers or close that school."

Surely you can appeal?

"For $50, students and their parents can request a rescore if they think the computer or the human got it wrong. The fee is waived if the new score is higher than the initial score. "

cc: @pluralistic this shitshow might interest you

technotion,
@technotion@urbanists.social avatar

@joop @pluralistic Wow, this is bullshit. Looking past everything else, just the fact that you need to pay $50 to request a re-evaluation is insane. The groups that will be negatively affected by this will be the same people who can't just fork over $50. Really upsetting.

"The administration says that private jets account for 7% of all flights handled by the FAA but less than 1% of taxes that fund the federal trust fund for aviation and airports. The Transportation Department said the proposal would raise $1.1 billion over five years."

Hey @ai6yr what's your favorite weather app? Trying to degoogle, and all of the other weather sites I try are just FILLED with Ads... Not to mention they're probably also tracking me... There has to be a better alternative right?

I'm on Android, but also open to web!

technotion,

@ai6yr lol yeah I was hoping for a bit more user friendly than weather.gov, ventusky looks great though! Seems as if they also have a nice app.

Thank you, weather god ๐Ÿ™
