HAPPY ART SHOW SUNDAY:
POETRY EDITION

I feel like doing something a little different today, so drop a piece of poetry you wrote! It can be old, new, or written on the spot. It can be funny, sad, dramatic, or challenging, whatever you feel like!

Poetry is nearer to vital truth than history.

The Ghost of a Little Cat

The ghost of a little cat waiting for her second supper
Asleep in the next room
Just out of sight
Forever

RickiTarr,
@RickiTarr@beige.party avatar

@isotope239 I had a ghost cat for awhile

@RickiTarr I think we all get a ghost cat any time a beloved four-legged companion shuffles off this mortal coil. You just can't get over the feeling that they'll stroll in and demand a snack at any time...

@RickiTarr

I'm for equality
As long as I'm more equal

Freedom is great
Maybe I'll let you hold it someday
But only for a moment,
Because it's precious
And I don't want it broken
(Your kind is clumsy, you know)

Welcome to the mansion.
Your room is in the carriage house.
Make sure you wear the uniform
I've very generously provided.

Don't let the laughter
From my party disturb you
We're just playing poker
And the loser has to dig
The mass graves
I'm just kidding
We use incinerators now.

I was wondering if Beige suspended Threads or not.

I've been looking for an alternative. Mastodon.social is all in on federating with Threads.
Naïve in the extreme.

I enjoy posting tanka on mastodon, here are a few I've posted previously:

smudging out the lines
that said too much; redacting
blood-red purple prose
and agonizing over
words that you will never read

the flame of a kiss
bellowing into a blaze
and boiling over
until the kettle has left
only wet ashes behind.

a crimson bouquet
half-whispered apologies,
a lit cigarette -
history vanishing like
smoke in an October wind

coffeepine,
@coffeepine@beige.party avatar

@RickiTarr

I am tired of carrying it around.
So, I'll leave it here
for everyone to leer at .

No, I cannot just bury it,
for I am afraid it might blossom
or worse
be forgotten.

I don't have anything original but I did rewrite these lyrics using Auguish Languish, an ersatz language that allows for substitutions using similar sounding words, the more ridiculous the better 😊

lots of character
things to throw
extravagant boil
this time say no

to wine
and warm leftovers
by dark plates pulling up, what
are the chances

look back to luck
to shower & go
to tell me what the ray-guns know

wear them down
yellow gown
to then come down for the morning

Between two trees
A small one grows
And reaches for the sky.
"He has no chance,"
The big ones say.
The little one starts to cry.

I wrote this decades ago when in high school. It was published in the school paper.

Not from Egypt did Israél escape,
and not from Rome did Jesus preach release.
The names all fall away, are naught but dust;
To overcome, a hunger born again.
No humans wear false labels Black or White.
From birch to ebony our sacred Flesh,
and all alive to bear redemption’s Word!
(I’m paraphrasing Beatles songs, y’know:
Here comes the sun, and I say it’s all right.
And don’tcha know it’s gonna be all right...?)

You call me monster
You call me perversion of nature
You call me destroyer of society
You call me demon
You call me delusional

Because my dreams terrified you

A dream of being a mum one day
A dream of having a baby
A dream of wearing my favourite frumpy sweater while my kid plays soccer
A dream of handing my kid the keys to the car saying "be home by 11", and cry for half an hour because to me it was just yesterday we came home from the hospital

I dreamt of the mundane

You dream of killing me

You call me evil

You call me insane

You call me anything but human

So many poems you’ve never read,
Because they never left my head.
A few were brilliant, most inane,
But all remained inside my brain,
And, like the clichéd morning dew,
Dissolved, and never got to you.
Nor does this end my tale of sorrow:
More poems of mine won’t see tomorrow!
Or you could count it as a mercy,
For few rejoyce when I get verse-y.

MARK

Near my center of mass
There is a mark
Of a particular shape
Recognizable to one who
Knows what to look for
Nobody sees it
Unless I want them to
Which means, of course,
Only two people
Have seen it

Somewhere not far
Is a woman
With this mark
But hers is deeper
Closer to her heart
It has a particular shape
Recognizable to one who
Knows what to look for
I am unaware
If others have seen it

Once or twice a year
I see this woman
We smile carefully
And we pretend
That we are unblemished
That we share no
Particularly shaped mark and
In those moments
I hold my breath
To bear the pain

I do not know
The depth of her pain
But I suspect (assume)
That hers is worse
And cuts far deeper
Even than mine because
When she looks at me
I see something deep
And well hidden
Yet recognizable to me

Because I know
What to look for

@RickiTarr

Like a flag
On shoulders worn
The sign of some great nation
A standard won
By another; a Son
Who bore our tribulation

This Grace mine
But truly not
Was given as a gift
I humbly wear
With loving care
Proof of the mended rift

Poor boy lost
In slums, on streets
Brought to the King's fair table
Now serve I
Until I die
As best as I am able

One day soon
We take our leave
And see the realization
Our pain borne
His Grace worn
The day of true salvation.

Wonderful trees
Waving in the breeze
Swinging and swaying
Practically playing
Trees Trees Trees
