More centrist bullshit on Elphicke. The inevitability of an incoming Labour government and their attractiveness to disaffected Tory voters is already too well established to merit accepting such a revolting specimen of humanity as Elphicke.
This smacks of the same "he's won the politics" that was peddled by the commentariat when Keith subverted the SNP ceasefire vote.
I used to respect Rafael Behr.

And it's these kind of games why everyone loses faith in democratic processes, and votes for extremists instead.

What cracks me up is when you go to a restaurant, and they ask if you've been there before, and then they say, "Well, we do things a little different here", and then it's exactly like every other restaurant, but more expensive.

@RickiTarr There was a hipster-ish bar here opening up and their spiel was "beer brewed German style" with prices thrice of what a regular pint would be.

People looked at them like they were crazy, so they felt the need to explain. It turns out their "German style" was simply to brew after the German Reinheitsgebot.

Their horrified faces when they understood that EVERY drink in Germany with "beer" in the name is brewed like that because it is literally the law. (you can brew differently, you just cannot name it beer then)

The story has a good ending though. Their beer was actually good, they adjusted the price to reasonable and focused on making their bar cozy. It survived until both of them wanted to return to the States.

Okay, this might sound weird, but this is what I'm thinking of today. I'm assuming most of you know the idiom, "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth." I know it's about looking at the horse's teeth to check it's age and health, but in my heart I have an alternate history where it's about The Trojan Horse, which doesn't really even make much sense, but it's still living there rent free.

So, does anyone else do this, make up alternate histories for words or phrases? If you do, I'd love examples!

@mentallyalex Well, I am lucky. My birthday is in the very heart of summer. (it's a few days after the solstice)

And over the last decade, I have adopted the simple habit of getting myself some food, some beers and lounge around somewhere where people are.

And those are the only days when I simply try to just be. No future, no past. I just sit, let the world wash over me and try accept - fully accept - the weirdness that is me and that I am STILL here.

Some people think it sounds kinda lonely, but I have people that will come around at some point or another. We'll laugh, we'll sing, we'll remember the ones that aren't there.

They never bring presents, because they know that they are every gift I can hope for.

@blogdiva Slight correction: it was 1933, the year of the last free election and the start of immediate dismantling of opposition over the next 6-9 months. What follows are the years of international appeasement when no one batted an eye and gave Hitler Austria and Czechoslovakia without push back.

1939 is the start of WWII but interior opposition to the Nazis by then was long gone and pretty much impossible. Stopping the war from inside the Reich? Nah.

Which makes your point even more important, though. The best point to start fighting fascists is always NOW.
