"Lawmakers and the governor are so proud of themselves that they’ve already branded this misguided way to deal with homelessness “The Florida Model.” But mandating that a class of people exist behind by barbed wire and supervised by authorities in the name of “security” is called internment. It’s incarceration as punishment for being destitute. And, it’s despicable — reminiscent of some of the world’s worst atrocities."

@StillIRise1963 So we've finally reached the point of internment camps....

Oh wait. I forgot about how Japanese people were treated during WW2. Oh yeah, and how Hispanic immigrants were treated for the last...I don't know how long it's been going on.

So what's really happening is, we are picking up the pace, and crossing the line of doing it to natural-born citizens. I wonder who's going in the camps next. And how long till it gets unmanageable and they start culling people to make room for more?

They will be counting on the old saying, "Out of sight, out of mind." Don't let them get away with it, people.

the_Effekt,

@hosford42 @StillIRise1963

There is already a subterfuge in government and media trying to quell the people who are attempting to bring it to light.

It actually compares to where we are in climate change as well, the early stages of the more severe effects of authoritarianism.

Half the German population seems to be in the streets over their fascist insurgency which is well behind ours. It's been a few years here. Women's March '17, BLM '20. Time to March again?

@hosford42 @StillIRise1963

Indeed, these are concentration camps

You even have to register for them... There is a homeless / enclosure where you can have a camper in San Luis Obispo but it is the most grim place there have been deaths there, and it's only because the bougie middle-class people want a better view

I drove through it once no drainage, this was before the multiple atmospheric rivers went through the area It must be hell now

Out of sight out of mind

StillIRise1963,
@StillIRise1963@mastodon.world avatar

@VoxofGod I'm wondering when they'll start making them work for nothing like they do with prisoners. Work camps doing the bidding of corps.

@StillIRise1963 @Kalshann @hosford42 I don't know how it's possible but yes there is part of San Luis Obispo county that is ugly and it is this center, which, ironically it just occurs to me is right across highway 1 from the California men's colony

@hosford42 @StillIRise1963 don't forget Hitler actually talked about how the "Indian Reservations" inspired him in MK.

And nevermind the outright atrocities we committed on American citizens in The Philippines and Puerto Rico. (Look up the history of the birth control pill or heart cancer--but only on an empty stomach).

Chickens are coming home to roost.

We pretend we were on the right side but before the holocaust people were looking for a place to run, America closed her doors!
Nazis were more interested in how the US designated Native Americans, Filipinos and other groups as non-citizens even though they lived in the U.S. These models influenced the citizenship portion of the Nuremberg Laws, which stripped Jewish Germans of their citizenship and classified them as “nationals.”

We taught them!🤬

What the current politicians wish to white wash, pretend doesn't exist, erase from History books is currently alive and thriving in our country. @philip_cardella @hosford42 @StillIRise1963 A lot of Japanese American citizens in the internment camps were natural born citizens, too

MeeMee,

@philip_cardella @hosford42 @StillIRise1963 @samhainnight And when they were snatching people who looked Mexican off of the streets of California, and shipping them to Mexico, many of those people were in fact U.S. citizens.

@StillIRise1963 I had to find an article not behind a pay/login wall yikes. They want to further criminalize and round up homeless people while blocking local governments from taking humane approaches. It’s internment for the sake of protecting property values.

@antipode77 @StillIRise1963 Wow. It was only a few years ago when I learned that folk who do (or not) the crime, do the time, can't vote (I guess that varies per state?), which is shocking, and adds another layer to why those governments love to imprison people.

@StillIRise1963 My grandma's neighbors in Boyle Heights were Issei and Nisei. Japanese-Americans. American citizens. They were forced to leave everything behind after Pearl Harbor and go into "relocation centers" thousands of miles away from their homes. They lost businesses and homes. They had to start over after they came home.

We're about to go through this again. Minorities. Homeless. Immigrants.

In a decent society wed have had presidential level attention, massive home construction, and trillions of dollars applied to the homeless crisis. That we havent is a testament to the type of society we are.
NB: US has always had a large number of homeless, from colonial days to the present. It is almost a feature of the American system.

WhyNotZoidberg,

@StillIRise1963 Replies keep comparing it to all kinds of things but you don't have to compare it to extremes like Nazi germany or whatever: This is how most European countries dealt with poverty at least three hundred years back. Just read Dickens ("Are there no prisons? Poor houses?").

It is horrible, but it is... for lack of a better word back to business as regular.
