danarel,

So Bluesky has its first outright Nazi member and not a real strategy on how to handle that. You can’t block users, only mute them so it leaves the community in danger that you can’t outright stop that user from seeing you.

This is where these systems fail, when they are so scared of censorship they put users in danger.

nightmareJS,

@danarel @ygalanter it’s in private beta. They expect to have blocking capabilities in place within the week.

In the meantime I haven’t run into said nazi

snipe,

@nightmareJS @danarel @ygalanter And they have blocking now. Even before that, the Nazi lasted one hour and then was booted from the network.

Alice_and_A,

@danarel The criminally wealthy are so obsessed with the poor's ability to exist without them.

@danarel I have no confidence they have the understanding or desire to fix this. Their puff pieces about the marketplace of composable, user selectable moderation are not about moderation at all. It’s about muting. Selective blindness. If you see hate speech on the platform, it’s your fault for choosing the wrong content labelling provider. It’s a Nazi bar where they hand out dark glasses for people that don’t want to see Nazis.

farbel,
@farbel@mas.to avatar

@danarel Individual users having the ability to control who sees them is not censorship. Bluesky doesn't have much of a future.

"The paradox of tolerance:
Unlimited tolerance must lead to the disappearance of tolerance. If we extend unlimited tolerance even to those who are intolerant, if we are not prepared to defend a tolerant society against the onslaught of the intolerant, then the tolerant will be destroyed, and tolerance with them."

@enmodo@mastodon.social avatar

@danarel the should have a special option for dealing with Nazis... "Mute", "Block", "Report", "PUNCH!"

south_lib,

@danarel
Insane how we don't have the FTC deal with this.

Like, our ALLIES censor bigots for the better! Look at Germany!

davidaugust,
@davidaugust@mastodon.online avatar

@danarel @theganyo you may be intrigued by this development at .

seth,

@danarel I want to try out Bluesky bc I'm curious. But, I'm going to stay on Mastodon.

seth,

@danarel Oy this is bad.

@danarel

If a bar doesn't toss out Nazi visitors, it's a Nazi Bar.

punkscience,

@danarel Isn't muting them the same as blocking them? What added advantage do you get to from the additional step of blinding them to your posts.

Even on Twitter that would be a false sense of security, since you could just logout or create a new account and then go see what any user's been saying.

otfrom,
@otfrom@functional.cafe avatar

@danarel if it is invite only, who invited the Nazi?

mikej,
@mikej@mastodon.online avatar

@danarel If anyone believes Bluesky is doing this because of a dedication to free speech, try publishing Jack's home address.

Shazbat,

@danarel If you don't ban fascists, you become a fascist site. Like Musk, they've chosen to host a fascist site.

rosorrentino,
@rosorrentino@techhub.social avatar

@mvcmendes acho que seria interessante ouvir mais disso no ADT

LevelUp,
@LevelUp@corteximplant.com avatar

@danarel That's actually a shame because it means that some communities on fedi who don't want to deal with unmoderated nazis may have no choice but to defed from bluesky once it becomes a bigger than too.

It's definately dangerous for their users, they're better off on another ActivityPub platform.

Green_Footballs,
@Green_Footballs@mastodon.social avatar

@danarel I think the wrong-headed libertarian “freeze peach” ideology is really just masking pure greed. They don’t kick out Nazis because anything that increases the userbase is fine with them.

mikej,
@mikej@mastodon.online avatar

@Green_Footballs @danarel Not just increasing the userbase, they also get all the users who want to yell at the nazis more actively engaged and get more chances to sell ads targeting them.

cykonot,
@cykonot@mas.to avatar

@danarel ignoring me is definitely censorship though? Shouldn't be able to mute either /s

LucyWildboots,

@danarel I’m not sure this is simply fear of censorship. I think it’s more fear of the money it costs to do moderation. And @ Jack wouldn’t be the first to be averse to doing proper moderation.

geographile,
@geographile@mastodon.social avatar

@danarel I needed to be able to block people.

jaykass,

@danarel how could they Nazi this coming?

miasmo,

@danarel "In danger" of what? Learning that there are douchebags on the internet?

danjac,
@danjac@masto.ai avatar

@danarel "not a bug but a feature". This is what happens when you have a project driven by free speech absolutists.

ember,

@danarel the freedom that they say to stand upon is as empty as their appreciation to human beings. Its always the freedom to keep social hierarchies and violence under the custody of few
