Yes, it’s your RESPONSIBILITY to stop racism when you hear it, see it happening. This is part and parcel of “we have to save ourselves, no one is coming to save us."

justafrog,
@justafrog@mstdn.social avatar

@StillIRise1963 If you permit racism near you, you're unsafe for minorities and safe for racists.

This seems the inverse of what I want to be.

kevinrns,
@kevinrns@mstdn.social avatar

@StillIRise1963

"Im not racist" someone pointed out, isnt a fully true statement.

"I am working hard agaist racism" is not the same as '"I stand by and dont say racist things."

Being not racist means actively exposing, actively defending, actoiely shutting down, actively joining in demands and defense.

Racism is an assault, an attack. You are actively involved in endding racism, or you are helping racists.

Well stated. You are 100% correct.

Inaction is guilt.

Silence is acquiescence.

In law.

@StillIRise1963 This is a tricky one for the conflict averse. It's scary to put yourself out there.

however, it IS our responsibility.

I suggest for those just starting out, something like "Hey, that's not cool." as an opening line. Work your way up to "Hey, don't be a racist prick!"

I also found when I started using this on the bus (for example), most of the time the racist would immediately back down as soon as they realized they had an audience, or that someone might challenge them.

jargoggles,
@jargoggles@kolektiva.social avatar

@Sablebadger @StillIRise1963
Yeah, for people who are very non-confrontational, a simple "I'm not okay with this" goes a long way.

When people are silent, a racist will use that to further their delusion that racism is more popular than it actually is.This is a big part of where the "everybody thinks it, but they're too afraid to say it" bullshit comes from.

You don't have to push back against them if you're not comfortable with that, simply let them know you don't agree. It's more powerful than you think.

Sablebadger,
@Sablebadger@dice.camp avatar

@jargoggles @StillIRise1963 we all have to start somewhere, and really any attention will usually make these folks back up. They are cowards at heart.

@Sablebadger @StillIRise1963 I always intended to take a training on bystander intervention, and there seem to be more of them available online these days, so now I have even less of an excuse not to do it. https://righttobe.org/bystander-intervention-training/

Conflict-averse people can still say, "Excuse me, you know that's racist, right?".

Okanogen,
@Okanogen@mastodon.social avatar

@Sablebadger @StillIRise1963
Not being conflict adverse, I just go right to "You know that's racist as fuck, don't you? Why don't you shut your fucking piehole?".
Yeah, I'm that fucking guy, and I'm old.

Okanogen,
@Okanogen@mastodon.social avatar

@Sablebadger @StillIRise1963
I'm often surprised what I get away with saying.
Most of these racists are fucking cowards. I'll laugh right the fuck in their face while saying what they did or said is racist as fuck and they will just back right down. It's not because I'm scary, I'm old now, gone short and fat, it's because I don't give a fuck about their feelings or decorum, old or young or whatever.
And when one person speaks up, you would be surprised how many people agree.

CStamp,
@CStamp@mastodon.social avatar

@Okanogen @Sablebadger @StillIRise1963 Depends on the situation. A woman could be endangering herself. There are situations in which it would be safer to help someone by pretending to know them and saying something like, "sorry, I'm late, let's get out of here."

Okanogen,
@Okanogen@mastodon.social avatar

@CStamp @Sablebadger @StillIRise1963
Nobody is demanding anyone endanger their own safety.

CStamp,
@CStamp@mastodon.social avatar

@Okanogen @Sablebadger @StillIRise1963 "Conflict-averse people can still say, "Excuse me, you know that's racist, right?"."

You made a general statement that would work in an ideal world. It's not an ideal world.

Okanogen,

@CStamp @Sablebadger @StillIRise1963
You would be surprised what you can say when you have moral courage.

Okanogen,
@Okanogen@mastodon.social avatar

@CStamp @Sablebadger @StillIRise1963
Not just that. It's addictive. It's not easy the first time, but when you try, and learn how liberating it is to be honest, when you feel the power of being honest and not cowering in fear, you will never go back.
Why do racists get free reign over us? Why is it ok for them to talk and act without conflict or consequence and we can't?
Screw that.

Just tonight I got in people's face to say Chicago is safer, cleaner, and better than when l grew up there. They were wanting people to agree Chicago is over run by the minorities. They want to believe it's a gang murder hellhole.
That is racism.
That is something even "conflict averse" people "afraid for their safety" can call out.
Chicago is a vital city and nowhere near as dangerous as when I grew up there in the 60's.

@StillIRise1963 i can say with certainty, that big tech algorithms ABSOLUTELY promote racism, as if you walked into a small town saloon.
I developed a habit before bed to scroll through fb and yt reels.
They progressively get more racist and hate filled, and definitely more pro-trvmp regardless of what types of reels you view and/or like.
