Err or medicine improved 😉

However, we now know that these events represented the largest influenza virus pandemic on record: the catastrophic 1918 influenza pandemic. Since 1918, the world has experienced three additional influenza pandemics: the 1957 “Asian” influenza pandemic, the 1968 “Hong Kong” influenza pandemic and the 2009 so-called “swine flu” pandemic. These pandemics, although mild in comparison to that of 1918,

Maybe I should stop doing that. If I came in with an offensive odor they might reach for that mask.

Regular phones lack spam protection so much that I'm considering completely disconnecting my number and going exclusively for web-based services that have better privacy controls.

I get an order of magnitude more recruiter spam and phishing via phone and SMS than legit communications.

maggiejk,
@maggiejk@zeroes.ca avatar

@afilina the iPhone allows me to only get text messages from known contacts, and I think there’s a setting so private numbers don’t ring through, but I can’t keep that on because my doctor calls from a private number.

But even blocked numbers will end up in voicemail

(Edited because it will receive and hold unknown texts in a separate folder but I don’t get alerts about them.)

I generally try to avoid shopping on (for various reasons), but my rule is that if something is only available on amazon or is much cheaper, I will shop there.

I bought something recently. They added me as a Prime member (I didn't click anything to become a prime member, but apparently I didn't uncheck something so they gave me a "free" month; which I don't actually need or want) and have been spamming me about Prime crap. And now my item arrived, and part of it is missing.

maggiejk,
@maggiejk@zeroes.ca avatar

@Andres4NY I have come to believe that if something is only available on Amazon it might be counterfeit.

I became freaked out about Amazon and counterfeit products, especially the flavor of cat food I was buying because the pet stores don’t have that specific flavor by itself like I’ve been purchasing it. That’s suspicious to me.

As we hear reports that it will take 10 years (🤯) to replace the 1.6 mile Francis Scott Key bridge in Baltimore, remember that China built the Danyang-Kunshan bridge and Qingdao Jiaozhou Bay Bridge in 4 years each.

Danyang-Kunshan Bridge is 102 miles long, and 100 ft above the water.

Jiaozhou Bay Bridge is 16 miles and 623 ft tall, earthquake and typhoon proof, and can withstand a direct strike from a 300,000 ton cargo ship. That last point is unfortunately topical.

I want to make clear that I do not buy the notion that the fascism we see is just politicians manipulating the polity by distracting them with fear and bigotry.

I know these people. I was one of them when I was growing up.

The evil was there, at their core, waiting to be accessed, and it was passed from one generation to the next via community conformity and social training.

They are as culpable as the politicians who manipulate them.

@msquebanh I live in New Hampshire USA and I recently learned that at some point in the past five years it became illegal for landlords to refuse to renew a lease just because.

I remember my mom got evicted years ago because her landlord decided not to renew the lease because her mental illness made her annoying to them.

I was delighted to learn that that rule had changed, because I have had to become annoying to my landlord and I was worrying that I would end up homeless this summer because of it.

> Post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 (PASC), or long COVID, is characterized by persistent symptoms after acute SARS-CoV-2 infection that can vary from patient to patient. Here, we present a case series of four patients with a history of SARS-CoV-2 infection referred to the Post-Acute COVID-19 Syndrome (PACS) Clinic at Stanford University for evaluation of persistent symptoms, who also experienced new-onset alcohol sensitivity. Alcohol reactions and sensitivity are not well characterized in the literature as it relates to post-viral illness. While there have been some anecdotal reports of new alcohol sensitivity in PASC patients in the media, there is a paucity of published data in the medical literature about this topic. During their medical consultation, the patients self-reported new changes in their symptoms or behaviors following the use of alcohol. A new onset of alcohol sensitivities should be assessed along with other post-COVID-19 symptoms and may provide novel avenues to explore the pathobiology of illness and potential interventions.

🤔 Why are people taking Scott Adams seriously? He says DEI stands for "Didn't Earn It." But let's look at his own words from his own book. He's boasting about his mediocrity, and how he didn't earn anything, and about how he was terrible at his job.

Every Black employee at his company earned it much more than he did. And these are his own words! And look at the text from his own performance review! 🤡

A bank teller that loses money and is incompetent, genuinely expecting to be promoted.

My supervisor liked me, but my sloppiness at keeping track of peo- ple's transactions-which in those days involved writing down num- bers with a pen and paper-made me unfit for the job. My supervisor warned me that unless I improved quickly, she would be forced to let me go. I knew I wasn't likely to get better at handling details. I was a failure at my first job. I figured I had two ways to leave my job. I could get fired or-and here's the optimist emerging-I could get promoted. I wrote a letter to the senior vice president for the branch system, who was probably seven or eight layers of management above me, and described all of my naive suggestions for improving the bank. My ideas had one thing in common: They were impractical for reasons a twenty-one-year-old wouldn't yet appreciate. I closed my letter by asking for a rare and coveted spot in the management training program, a fast track to up- per management. It was a long shot for a guy who had on his perma- nent work record some version of "too incompetent to write numbers

Don’t think about the lives that got ruined by his mistakes. No big deal, he prefers to make mistakes and learn from them rather than just learn how to do it right in the first time.

The idea of human beings as rational utility-maximizing particles with insatiable hedonic desires is very much the product of an ideological project to justify capitalism as “natural” and has virtually no relationship to how actual human beings live but a lot of people have genuinely internalized it.

Trying to derive “human nature” by observing people under capitalist modernity is like looking at a bored, depressed wolf obsessively pacing a circle in a tiny zoo enclosure and concluding that this is “wolf nature.”

maggiejk,
@maggiejk@zeroes.ca avatar

@HeavenlyPossum I’ve been watching people kill off their friends and family so they don’t have to give up a fun activity. Yeah, people cannot be trusted to do the right thing. We’ve been watching it happen for four years

And I can say for sure that I haven’t spread airborne viral diseases to my friends family or community because I care about the health of my community and I care about other people.

Plus there’s a huge group of human beings who only do the right thing because sky daddy is watching them and they are threatened with hell if they don’t do the right thing. But you really think that these people would just continue doing the right thing if they weren’t afraid of Satan or wanting to go to heaven? Nah

The Lexington Herald Leader reports that the bill—which provided services and help to new moms—had wide support. The bill recently got a 90-0 vote in the House. But then came the language that I’ve been warning about in my Calculated Cruelty series.”
