@GottaLaff
This is happy to see my Constitutional right to practice my religion being defended. Fundies & Fascists are all about Freedom for ME & not for THEE.

Now let's free the Muslims

@GottaLaff I’m not optimistic for their case, but the legal argument seems airtight

> The plaintiffs include practitioners of Judaism, Unitarian Universalism, Episcopalianism and paganism — all belief systems that allow abortions under circumstances outside the ban’s narrow exceptions.

@peterbutler really glad to see this. When the abortion ban passed here in Indiana, hubby and I discussed how it was just a matter of time until people outside the conservative evangelical base challenged it citing RFRA violation.

@GottaLaff Interesting reading. So it appears the only way to have standing against these religious laws are to have a religious basis. As an atheist I really find that wrong. Wrong as in I am being personally wronged by this religion and these religious legislators and judges, and I believe I should be Constitutionally protected ALREADY against this. Even the plaintiff who didn't believe in a "theistic god" had to frame their argument religion-adjacent. That should be wrong.

Nonya_Bidniss,
@Nonya_Bidniss@mas.to avatar

@GottaLaff The issue here is that we should, every single one of us, be free from another's religion.

GottaLaff,
@GottaLaff@mastodon.social avatar

@Nonya_Bidniss As a fellow atheist. I agree

@GottaLaff @Nonya_Bidniss

I propose a law saying that if you try to preach your religion to someone, they have a legal right to shoot you on the spot. Proselytize at your own risk. 😆

Nonya_Bidniss,
@Nonya_Bidniss@mas.to avatar

@ashwin Oh my that seems a little much...but in some states apparently you can shoot someone who accidentally turns up the wrong driveway or knocks on the wrong door with no repercussions, so who's to say? @GottaLaff

@GottaLaff@mastodon.social avatar

@Nonya_Bidniss @ashwin Sorry but violence is never the solution, even in jest

I think that atheism should be a recognized religion in the USA in regards to having the same constitutional protections the fairy tale believers receive.

I don't know if we would have to have a religious text than.

Trying to think of what physics and ecology textbooks that would go together well to make one. It would have to include a good description of the scientific method.

@GreenFire @GottaLaff @Nonya_Bidniss Didn't Alito make 'sincerely held beliefs' the litmus test in the Hobby Lobby case?

Nonya_Bidniss,
@Nonya_Bidniss@mas.to avatar

@socprof Yeah but that's because it worked in favor of his desired outcome. @GreenFire @GottaLaff

Or like Issac Asimov said perhaps, "Properly read, the Bible is the most potent force for atheism ever conceived."

David Frost asked him if he had tried to find God. He replied that he hadn't given it much thought. Frost was incredulous. Asimov responded, “God is much more intelligent than I am — let him try to find me.”

I also like his argument for why he goes by the "label" of being a rationalist as opposed to an atheist too.

Nonya_Bidniss,
@Nonya_Bidniss@mas.to avatar

@GreenFire "let him try to find me” is exactly my philosophy. So far the only information I've had about any gods has come from other people, who know no more than anyone else. @socprof @GottaLaff

It's funny I always mix up the terms proselytizing and prostitution, considering the latter is an honorable profession where as the former is just holier than thou thuggery ... 🤔 🙄 😜

@GottaLaff There's no way this would ever happen, but I like imagining the repercussions if they ended up ruling that people who belonged to those religious groups could legally get reproductive health services. The unintended consequences would be really interesting.

SCOTUS was warned about the simple logic of engaging in the kind of misdirection about religion disguised as law that they regularly engage in.... Of course, hypocrisy runs deep in Christian apologists!

@lednaBM @GottaLaff

They want religion to cover "my religion" not "your religion".
