So, y'all @allstartrek folks got me watching Enterprise, and so far S1 is pretty decent. Not the song though, it's still 💩. I remember Berman and Braga saying they hated it too on The Center Seat, and I almost shouted to my TV "you were the show runners, the song doesn't happen without your ok'ing it!".

One of the more bizarre categories of (mostly) older films are the so-called "sword and sandal" movies, that were produced in enormous numbers from the late 1950s especially through the 60s and even later. Mainly made in Italy and usually poorly dubbed in English by the time they hit U.S. markets, the genre is usually traced to three films - "Cabiria" (1914), "Fabiola" (1949), and perhaps especially Steve Reeves in "Hercules" (1958). These films were virtually always set in the Roman Imperial era or earlier.

During the 1960s these films often seemed to fill the weekend afternoon schedules of local TV stations here in L.A., often as part of a syndication package called "Sons of Hercules" (though the films themselves, despite an added voice over claiming otherwise, actually were usually not directly related to Hercules at all). The package had a really catchy theme song, however.

The "technical" name for this category of films is "peplum", coined by film critics from the style of clothing usually worn by men in these films (e.g., short ruffled skirts and little else).

The free to view Tubi streaming service appears to be loaded with peplum films, if your taste happens to run in that direction. In any case, it's a noteworthy film subculture unto itself.

@lauren Roland Barthes had a whole chapter on peplums in Mythologies.

@lauren Peplums came in both high (Cleopatra) and low-brow forms (all the Steve Reeves ones) and were very schlocky.

You know why nobody talks about “garage inventors” anymore? Besides the fact that nobody can afford a garage anymore, it’s also due to changes in patent law that congress approved that largely cripples small inventors with a “first to file” rule that makes it way too easy for big companies to basically make off with any good idea by patenting a defensible variant using their biggest advantage: lots of money to spend on lawyers.

socprof,
@socprof@masto.ai avatar

@shoq I would argue that the "garage inventor" thing was also something for the already privileged who did need to get a side job and had disposable money to buy the supplies they needed. Also, the rising cost of college plays a part in who has the time on the side for garage experimenting.

The classics keep popping on Movies & TV. Another one (as before, free in the U.S.) has apparently just surfaced. And it's a biggie -- 1960's "Spartacus". Mostly directed by Stanley Kubrick, it's arguably Kirk Douglas' most important role. Running more than three hours, it's one of the uber-great historical dramas, about an escaped gladiator who takes on the entire Roman Empire, and is based on an actual slave immortalized in historical texts from the period. If you've never seen this wondrous film you should. And if you have, it's probably time to see it again.

The scariest episode of "Space: 1999" (among a number that were definitely upsetting) is called "Dragon's Domain". There is essentially 100% agreement on this on every list (including mine), and the number of nightmares it has produced over the decades since its original airing in 1975 is undoubtedly immense. It's said that when BBC reran the episode 20 years later (!) they got a pile of complaints about running it too early in the evening.

Oh, you want to see it? to the rescue (at least in the U.S.):

Might be wrong here, but seems like this may be a bigger deal than a clerical error as is being widely reported:

Rejected and ‘returned for correction’: Docs for Trump’s $175M bond get bounced >>> https://lawandcrime.com/high-profile/rejected-and-returned-for-correction-docs-for-trumps-175m-bond-get-bounced/

It may be that the bond company didn't report their financials because they have insufficient collateral to secure a bond of this magnitude. In which case the bond is no good, Trump doesn't have a bond, and he is out of time.

Let's see how this gets resolved...

socprof,
@socprof@masto.ai avatar

@GottaLaff @mastodonmigration With Trump, it's frauding all the way done.
