Rather than making another 10-post-long thread 🧵 on the latest things #Project92, I had mercy on everyone & just wrote 1 blog post…
(TLdr: the sky isn't falling, we have always been a diverse set of cultures and moderation standards, we will work it out on both fronts, but a lot is changing on all fronts & more will. And through it all we have all we need to protect our people.) Open to any thoughts, pushback, etc….
@tchambers Your article helped me understand better that federating with #P92 isn’t, in isolation, the biggest threat to be worried about. Thank you for that. However, the bigger issue for me is that #Meta is not going to participate in good faith. They will seek to compromise the largest #Fediverse instances and poison the community’s critical mass from within. What are the tools we have to collectively defend against that, beyond preemptive action, before it’s too late?
@strixy I'm an admin of a mid-sized server w/ abt. 11K users. Any one of my users are fully free to block Meta's domains at will should they wish.
Also on top of that: as I see ANY harassment, toxic behavior, etc. reaching my folks from P92 users, I as admin can do things from permanently removing that user from ever being seen by any of my admins' site, reporting them to their admin (who would be Meta Trust and Safety) but also silencing them, deleting there posts form my users, etc.
As a cultural #anthropologist, I appreciate your approach to seeing the #Fediverse as having diverse cultures. I really appreciate the even-handed tone and thoughtfulness your bring to these discussions. I am someone who came to Mastodon to get FAR, FAR, FAR away from #BigTech. I do not regret the move. I’m a newbie who is not (yet) wedded to any particular #fediculture. I find everything happening here fascinating.
I wouldn’t mind a trend to more female-identifying fedizens. 😜
