Apparently Apple Music for Mac has rabid fanbois (they are all men. All of them) and they are on Threads?! Of all the truly shitty products to stan, you want to defend Apple Music on the Mac?! I’ll defend Apple Music on iOS, even tho sync is a shit show, but on the desktop?! Man normies are weird.

stroughtonsmith,
@stroughtonsmith@mastodon.social avatar

@film_girl yeah no question, Music is a disaster. I recently gave up and wiped my library, not gonna try to collect music anymore.

film_girl,
@film_girl@mastodon.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith I feel this so hard. Like you I’ve got over 20 years of this shit and I’m prob just going to go PlexAMP or Roon.

Samekh,
@Samekh@mastodon.social avatar

@film_girl @stroughtonsmith PlexAMP is so good, especially with Tidal integration

vanitalo,
@vanitalo@mastodon.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith @film_girl I had a similar experience with the macOS Music app, my library got corrupted. I tried restoring it from backup, I tried rebuilding it by hand importing my files and restoring artwork etc. but all the meta-data kept getting screwed up. I gave up and wiped my local library and just added songs and albums from Apple Music online. It makes me think this is what Apple wants people to do which is probably why Music is so terrible for managing local libraries these days 🙁

r_df_ng,
@r_df_ng@mastodon.social avatar

@film_girl It’s my preferred way to listen to music so it's even worst that it sucks so much. The thing that really gets me is when it decides to mess with metadata, just why?? 💔

niclake,
@niclake@mastodon.social avatar

@film_girl The ONLY reason I use Apple Music on Mac is because it allows shuffling of a playilst by album. The day Spotify introduces that, I'm switching back.

vanitalo, (edited )
@vanitalo@mastodon.social avatar

@film_girl As a paying subscriber to Apple Music I think the Music app sux on every Apple platform 😞 it needs a complete overhaul! The macOS version is probably worse than the iOS version but I don’t use it much anymore except for maintaining smart playlists because there doesn’t appear to be any way to do that on iOS 😡

I just don’t understand how Apple could possibly think that the Apple Music app is of acceptable quality and usability 🤦‍♂️ I guess they just don’t care. 🤑

craiggrannell,
@craiggrannell@mastodon.social avatar

@film_girl I use Music on macOS every day. It’s my main player. That it has rabid fanbois… I mean, it shouldn’t surprise me, but it still somehow does.

(I think it sucks, but, well, gravity…)

corsairstw,
@corsairstw@mastodon.social avatar

@film_girl Music for Mac is great. Don't diss it.

jamie_blumberg,
@jamie_blumberg@hachyderm.io avatar

@film_girl The only real edge I'll give to Music on macOS is that there are things you can do there which you simply can't on iOS/iPadOS. That does not make it good software; just more capable.

film_girl,
@film_girl@mastodon.social avatar

@jamie_blumberg totally. And that’s why I’m forced to use it on desktop. Because I need to update metadata or want to upload something to my library.

EshuMarneedi,
@EshuMarneedi@mastodon.social avatar

@film_girl I noticed this too. I complained about how you can't close the settings menu with ⌘W on Threads a few weeks ago and the fanbois came after me.

The Music app on macOS feels like an Electron app. It's genuinely abhorrent.

jackwellborn,
@jackwellborn@mastodon.social avatar

@film_girl Imagine defending a music player that has a "Song” menu that is entirely grayed out whenever you play song from its subscription service.

tjdraper,
@tjdraper@phpc.social avatar

@film_girl I think Music app on iOS AND macOS is garbage. That said, Music on Mac has the one thing that makes it superior to all other garbage music apps: the column browser, which allows one to drill down by genre, artist, and album. iOS used to have that before the cloud/Beats version of the app. I was so angry they took it away.

But, I don’t defend this crappiness of the entire eco-system of music apps (including Apple) in any way. We’re living in the worst timeline for music apps (IMO).

film_girl,
@film_girl@mastodon.social avatar

@tjdraper agreed. There is an app called Swinsian (it’s a one-time purchase and v3 has been in development for a while, you get it by downloading the beta from inside the app on their website by holding option when you check for updates) that is essentially better version of old school iTunes. It’ll even import your iTunes or AM library and supports FLAC.

BenRiceM,
@BenRiceM@mastodon.social avatar

@film_girl I always play music and podcasts from my phone, even when at my desk. The Mac seems to have much more issues with Bluetooth audio

freediverx,
@freediverx@mastodon.social avatar

@film_girl
Apple Music is trash on every platform (iOS, iPadOS, macOS, tvOS), and I say that as a subscriber. Infuriatingly bad user interface, seemingly designed by people who don't actually listen to music. In fact it seems designed by people who long for the days of listening to music on commercial radio. Almost as bad as the Apple TV UI.

brianhough,
@brianhough@mastodon.social avatar

@film_girl Apple Music on Mac isn’t terrible for me, but it also isn’t great and certainly isn’t worth rabidly defending! I just can’t say I’ve ever had a truly terrible experience either, so I usually come away feeling very “meh” about it. (For what its worth, I stayed up until midnight to listen to TTPD and had zero issues last night, showed up around 12:01 for me)

Raffo,
@Raffo@mastodon.social avatar

@film_girl I am weird cause I use Apple Music on android, but I’m not gonna say it’s good 😅

so,
@so@hachyderm.io avatar

@film_girl TIL people like Apple Music on macOS. It’s so buggy, I’ve given up on Airplay.

film_girl,
@film_girl@mastodon.social avatar

@so I’m convinced these are people that have never used a good desktop music client and are convinced this is as good as it gets.

waltman,
@waltman@hachyderm.io avatar

@film_girl I mean, the UI isn't great, but I'm used to it. The one thing Music for Mac has that the other apps don't is smart playlists, which I use all the time. My main one is a smart playlist that roughly emulates how the old “iTunes DJ” playlist used to work.

film_girl,
@film_girl@mastodon.social avatar

@waltman right that is nice but if you’ve got a really large library, they don’t always work particularly well.

freediverx,
@freediverx@mastodon.social avatar

@film_girl @waltman
Putting aside your own music library, consider for a moment discovering new music from artists you follow. Sure, AM can show notifications for each new release. But amazingly there's no way to see a list of latest releases from artists you follow in reverse chronological order. And then there's the convoluted, disorienting, and illogical navigation throughout the app.

waynedixon,
@waynedixon@mastodon.social avatar

@film_girl Apple Music on the Mac is absolute crap. Even though my computer is on and the app is open it never syncs anything. I always have to manually sync my library. It also doesn’t honor not downloading the Dolby atmos version of songs even when the preference is unchecked.

joshrivers,
@joshrivers@techhub.social avatar

@film_girl I like how when I press play…nothing happens.

I’ve been wondering if it is better on Windows.

film_girl,
@film_girl@mastodon.social avatar

@joshrivers sadly no. At first I was hopeful the redesigned Apple Music app for windows would be because they stripped all the iTunes stuff out of it but no

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@film_girl Yeah and I feel alone that on my Mac is where I listen to most of my music (while working) so it's extra rough

film_girl,
@film_girl@mastodon.social avatar

@christianselig same. It’s why I pay for Spotify b/c time is too short to fuck around with Apple Music for Mac

luckie_reubs,
@luckie_reubs@mastodon.social avatar

@film_girl @christianselig I use Music because it's part of our Apple One bundle (which is basically theft on Apple's part), but I can't understand how Music is still so bad. Why can't I search my Library and Apple Music at the same time?

agiletortoise,
@agiletortoise@mastodon.social avatar

@film_girl It got a little better in Sonoma.

That's it. that's the list of nice things I have to say about Apple Music on Mac.

agiletortoise,
@agiletortoise@mastodon.social avatar

@film_girl But also, this still cracks me up. In my head I've decided they lost the original source code to recompile for Apple Silicon, and just keep shipping the bits.

Joekw,
@Joekw@mastodon.social avatar

@agiletortoise @film_girl in my experience it actually got worse 😓 i get multiple “you can’t play music on more than 1 device” alerts when i wake from sleep and it crashes on dismissing the last alert

markv, (edited )
@markv@mastodon.social avatar

@film_girl Reminds me of this one 🙂
