The right kept their eye on the Supreme Court prize for 50 years. They waited that long to get a majority that would do whatever they wanted. Unfortunately, it paid off.

At least some of the left doesn’t seem to be nearly as focused on the Supreme Court as the right was. These are lifetime appointments and there is no quick fix. We have to wait it out and keep our eye on the prize, like the right did.

@TonyStark If Donald Trump wins in November, Thomas and Alito will see their window to retire and be replaced by forty-somethings with identical ideology. Anything can happen to one of the three moderates, so he may well replace one or more of them as well. If you vote for anyone besides Joe Biden, you endorse that outcome, which will affect you for 30-40 years.

We will literally be determining if we live in the same country, warts and all, or some twisted conglomeration of Russian oligarchy and Nazi fascism. If Trump wins your grandchildren's entire lives will totally suck.

@mastodonmigration @MisterMoo And forget climate action, which we don’t have time to fuck around with, birth control for women gone, LGBTQ rights, consumer protection, worker protection, any functioning federal agency, IVF, I could go on. For a few people to feel a false sense of superiority.

Legit. It is not hyperbole to say that the entire future of the human race hangs in the balance.

@MisterMoo @TonyStark You’re absolutely right. I hope enough people understand this.

@MisterMoo @TonyStark for those wanting to go third party because they’re upset at a policy disagreement. I have to live with the fact that I voted for Ralph Nader in 2000 and was indirectly responsible for Alito being placed on the court and the elevation of John Robert’s to CJ.

@fjwheeler @MisterMoo Learning from our mistakes is a show of intelligence. Refusing to do that is stubborn stupidity.

Not to mention the Iraq War and the climate change thing, and I swear I'm not rubbing salt in.
Our choices matter. They really do, and voting for Harambe won't fix this world.

TonyStark,
@TonyStark@progressivecafe.social avatar

@Okanogen @fjwheeler @MisterMoo I really wish I didn’t have to mention it. But half the time I say anything about voting for a Dem, I get weird replies about “sending a message.”

The message people are sending with that is “I refuse to do a simple thing that will cause the least harm.”

It’s not a great message.

fjwheeler,
@fjwheeler@mastodon.world avatar

@TonyStark @Okanogen @MisterMoo the only message I was sending at that time was “I’m young and I don’t understand how politics works.” Hindsight is always 20/20.

Okanogen,

@fjwheeler @TonyStark @MisterMoo
I get it. Totally do. How do we convince today's youth their choices are important, they may be imperfect, but they matter?

TonyStark,
@TonyStark@progressivecafe.social avatar

@Okanogen @fjwheeler @MisterMoo Some of them are very bad at long term thinking. I know I am going to sounds like an old person (Gen X so people can make of that what they will) but there's a lot of isolation and social media manipulation.

I have a teenage daughter who I taught to (so far) have the ability to think for herself, but there's a lot of in-group pressure.

I suppose one on one stuff can still work but I'm not totally sure, I have a neighbor with 2 in their 20's refusing to vote.

fjwheeler,
@fjwheeler@mastodon.world avatar

@TonyStark @Okanogen @MisterMoo I really lay the blame on the far Left and some of the intellectuals who advocated the claim that there’s no difference between the political parties. For me it was the nonsensical ramblings of Noam Chomsky.

TonyStark,
@TonyStark@progressivecafe.social avatar

@fjwheeler @Okanogen @MisterMoo I used to have a more neutral opinion of him, but most of the comments I get the last few years about him are exceedingly culty. There’s not one person I’m into so much that I’d follow every single thing they’ve ever said.

He’s pretty far removed from real day-to-day life.

Blocking any further right-wing appointments to is just about the most important thing we need to do as citizens. Guarding appointments to the court - and - are the keys.

@bhahne Yes- let’s expand it and watch Trump get elected because that’s unfortunately a real possibility and let him appoint more.

geos,
@geos@toot.community avatar

@TonyStark Can congress pass a law setting the size of the Supreme Court? The Constitution does not set a size, so it seems that legislation could be passed to limit the size. It would take both houses and the presidency to get it done.

TonyStark,
@TonyStark@progressivecafe.social avatar

@geos That would be the best way to do it and the hardest for anyone to overturn. Biden unilaterally doing it, although it could be done, isn’t great when so many people won’t commit to voting for him and that started the day he got elected, but just recently.

Theoretically, people tell me all kinds of things Biden should do, like “Mint the Coin” when that came up. Not all ideas are good ideas.

geos,
@geos@toot.community avatar

@TonyStark

There is a legitimate case for expansion. The appellate districts expanded from 9 to 13, and at one time there was one SCOTUS justice for each district. So, 13 is probably justifiable.

I think legislating the size is a good idea. My guess is the GOP will try it based on my argument next time they have a chance. They would love a 10-3 majority. So, there is some urgency to do something.

TonyStark,
@TonyStark@progressivecafe.social avatar

@geos I agree with the idea but obviously Dems cannot do it. I know about the 9 to 14 thing. If we cannot guarantee Dem majorities for the next several decades for President and Senate, it’s not a good plan. People show me that will, I’m in.

geos,
@geos@toot.community avatar

@TonyStark
I think the GOP will try thisthe next chance they get.

TonyStark,
@TonyStark@progressivecafe.social avatar

@geos Probably. I can go back to my 2009 social media and pick out people on the left who blamed Obama and Democrats for what Republicans did to the ACA and saying they’d vote third party. Until people pull it together realize what needs to happen, we’re going to be stuck here in potential fascist hell.
