🙏🏿Lord, grant me the confidence of a techbro podcast handing out "Go woke, go broke" advice, where the techbros are:

  • The SPAC king that destroyed so much of his investor's wealth
  • The dudes responsible for the Twitter fail that destroyed their investors' wealth

https://finance.yahoo.com/news/chamath-palihapitiya-crumbling-spac-empire-100748788.html

The dudes currently setting potential world records of wealth destruction through their bad ideas, dispensing wisdom about how other people's ideas might cost investors money.🙂🙃

"Woke" means Black people.

mekkaokereke,
@mekkaokereke@hachyderm.io avatar

I'll say this as bluntly as I can:

The skills needed to make money from 2000 to 2020, are different than the skills needed to make money from 2020 to 2040. The anti-woke stuff (fashy stuff) does not make money.

Yes, even for the "hyper-capitalist, I don't care about other people, I just want the cash" bros, it makes zero business sense to go fashy. "Go fash, lose cash."

bcdavid, (edited )
@bcdavid@hachyderm.io avatar

@mekkaokereke None of what they think makes sense from a "make money for investors, or money in general" perspective. A lot of it does make sense from the "keep me, personally, in a position of power" perspective.

jherazob,

@mekkaokereke
For those of us clueless about all that, what would you say are those post-2020 skills needed?

mekkaokereke, (edited )
@mekkaokereke@hachyderm.io avatar

@jherazob

One example:
Pre 2016, you could get by without knowing how to hire, support, retain, grow women. You could be an unrepentant sexist and run a successful large company with almost no women employees.

Today, a team of all dudes will get steamrolled by a competitor that knows how to hire women. Because if your team is all men you're missing more than 1/2 of the available talent pool: Missing women, and also missing "Men that don't want to work at a place that treats women terribly."

JessTheUnstill,

And the thing is: women and minorities talk to one another - both inside the company and outside the company. I've seen how many women have been run off from my org - especially women in leadership positions. While they always say it in some positive framing about how they got a better opportunity elsewhere for more money/responsibility/etc., we all know the code words. I ain't referring any of the awesome women I know to fill those spots.

"go fash, lose cash."

Brilliant. Stealing.

EFreethought,

@mekkaokereke
And he blames the Fed for losing money. A lot of people do that these days. I don't know who first pointed this out, but nobody thanked the Fed during all that time they were making money.

mekkaokereke,
@mekkaokereke@hachyderm.io avatar

@EFreethought

If you only know how to "make money" when a racist and sexist industry (VC) gives you billions of practically interest free dollars (while restricting more diverse, creative people from getting any funding), and when questionable financial vehicles let you get retail investors to hold the bag...

Then you don't know how to make money. You know how to raise money.🤷🏿‍♂️

I'm not a fan of the Fed jacking up interest rates just to cause layoffs, but it did expose a lot of these VCs.

bermudianbrit,

@ppatel @mekkaokereke I'd love to believe this but can you source examples of it?

When people try to tell me that Conor McGregor is a great fighter, I point out that he has only won one fight since 2016. 2016! 🤷🏿‍♂️

Similarly some of your favorite VCs are only still rich because they achieved escape velocity by getting rich pre-2016. The power of "stonks go up," and low tax rates for the uber wealthy, means it's hard for their worth to go down.

The physics of megawealth buoyancy keeps them afloat, but they haven't had a good idea since pre-2016. Just been blabbing about crypto.

deilann,

@mekkaokereke they even want to destroy good ideas like increased access to wfh because many of them have their money raft floating on real estate because it's such easy passive income and they can cry about how they take on risk and then beg for help whenever the risk affects them and get comforted by the government

red0ran,

@deilann @mekkaokereke or they've invested in work surveillance firms whose biz models largely rely on hoovering up mountains of data which is more easily accomplished in office.

johnmclear,
@johnmclear@mastodon.green avatar

@mekkaokereke it hurts because it's true.

cbroome,

@mekkaokereke and their “good” idea often wasn’t an original one. Everyone could see the blood in the water around Friendster. MySpace was the one that broke through. Then everyone could see the blood in the water around MySpace, and Facebook broke through. No new ideas, just better execution and being held aloft by a VC class until their project caught a favorable wind.

James Cameron made movies in the 90s, 2000s, 2010s, and 2020s. He has winners throughout that time. (Aside: Everyone's running to rewatch Titanic but they should be running to rewatch The Abyss). He makes deep water movies every chance he gets.

He doesn't complain endlessly about "everything is so woke now!" Because his films are still hitting. Even when he gets dragged for making "Water Pocahontas." He just keeps it pushing, and doesn't cry himself to sleep.

Late career failure -> anti-woke.

psychictides,

The whole movie is awesome.

@LinuxAndYarn@mastodon.social avatar

@genxjamerican @mekkaokereke The Abyss is my second-favorite Cameron film, behind Aliens. (And TBH, Lindsey and Ripley have a lot of the same energy.)

SushiUmbrella,

@mekkaokereke Another thing James Cameron succeeded at that I only just now realized wasn't a given - messing around in submarines for 30? 40? years without getting himself and a bunch of other people killed.

@mekkaokereke James Cameron is a straight up artist. I’m not a film nerd but I’ll stop what I’m doing to catch an in-depth interview with him. It’s deeply enjoyable listening to him talk about his craft, his philosophy, and his reflections on his body of work.

I like to make fun of James Cameron (like saying Avatar 2 is a feminist movie because there is a pregnant woman spent a few minutes of screen time fighting in battle) but to his credit his movies are visually great and good on him for keep on pushing the boundaries.

I mean this as the highest of compliments: I see him very much as a punk filmmaker. As in, he's punk rock - he would be making films whether anyone watched or not, he just fucking loves film. He was fortunate that he makes poppy films!

I wish more people knew about his absolute obsession with the art and where he started: https://boldentrance.com/james-cameron-roger-corman-the-terminator/

And The Abyss is beautiful. There isn't one part that lets the others down. Ridiculously good.

sefufuller,

@mekkaokereke lets be honest tho, his career has been the technologist who tells stories rather than a story teller who uses technology (Steven Spielberg)

MrShoggoth,

@mekkaokereke - The Abyss is the far better movie. I lwatch Titanic with the sound off to enjoy the visual effects and skip the embarrassing dialog and plot.

seph,

@mekkaokereke I think VCs trying to create unicorns for themselves is also terrible for the entrepreneurs. Most will fail, but the VC still comes out ahead.

jbminn,

@mekkaokereke absolutely.

reactions to my statement 'i lost $3.6M in the first bubble' depends wholly on whether the person hearing it has - i love your phrasing - already achieved escape velocity.

i realize that my ability to nonchalantly mention this says different things to different people. money is weird.

@mekkaokereke The GOAT fighters are judged by the number of times they defended their titles. Conor won 2 belts but waa stripped of both because he never even attempts to defend either one. Other than the last title fight, he won 2 of his last 6.

He probably could have been great but fighting wasn’t his main focus so we’ll never know.

Every mega corporation is financing the fascists. Tax cuts and regulation roll backs. That's all they care about. They want to pollute freely again and usher in a new age of slavery. Zero hour contracts in the UK and no right to protest there now, either. The roll back of child labor laws and Abbott's death star bill in the US. The raising of the retirement age in France. On, I almost forgot the destruction of the NHS. The bad guys are winning😔

Oceloctopus,

@mekkaokereke
Anyone looking further than the next quarter knows that "fashy shit" is inherently unstable and relies on the looting of The Other for returns which are frequently thrown away on frivolous things like increased policing, unnecessary wars, and inner circle gold vaults.

"looking further than the next quarter" however is proving to be an unfortunately high bar for many"

@mekkaokereke I still love Neil Gaiman's reply to their mantra:

"Sandman went woke in 1988, and it hasn't gone broke yet."

IronCurtain,

@joncruz @mekkaokereke Star Trek was woke in the 1960's, and MST3K and the Simpsons were woke in the 1990's, arguably earlier.

The Simpsons is the longest-running TV show in history and Star Trek and MST3K have ultra-passionate fanbases.

More like "If you ain't woke, you're the joke!"

mekkaokereke,

@econelan

There are a lot of people that care about LGBTQIA folks, that are more upset that Anheuser fired Alissa Heinerscheid (the marketing exec that hired Dylan Mulvaney), backtracked on the trans community, and left Mulvaney out to dry to face anti-trans hate attacks.

And remember, Alissa was brought in specifically because Anheuser was declining among younger drinkers anyway, because they weren't culturally relevant.

But the narrative is somehow "Only Trump supporters drink alcohol." 🤷🏿‍♂️

mekkaokereke,
@mekkaokereke@hachyderm.io avatar

@econelan Instead of Bud Light being "Go woke, go broke" I'd say it's:

"If you want to sell more alcohol to people that support the LGBTQIA community, maybe don't do a shallow pride-washing, followed by immediate jettisoning of that same trans community at the first sign of resistance by violent fascists. Because then you'll confirm people's worst fears about your intentions: that they weren't genuine, and were an attempt to profit from, but not support them."

You can make things much worse.

MrShoggoth,

@mekkaokereke - In the old days you could pelt these guys with rotten fruit and poop to make them go away. Sadly, with the Internet, they’re never really gone. All you can do is tune em out. 🤡💩🤡

To be fair, it’s not that specific. Woke is used by fascists as a slur against anyone who opposes bigotry.

@mekkaokereke not sure if "go fash, no cash" is specifically a Beau thing, but it's definitely used there regularly.
