Your level of skill or competence in those fields don't matter, and it certainly doesn't matter whether or not you've been paid to do them. You don't need to say you're an 'aspiring' anything - you are the thing.
@Curator I was a photographer for many years (for my Joy not for work) now at 62 years old I am learning to design my stuff with CAD software to print them with my first 3D printer.

@Curator yep…and, if you make 3D images, you are an artist, even if most people say ‘draw’ or ‘paint’. Sculptors are artists. People who use collage techniques are artists..if you look at Duchamp and ‘readymades’, you can say pretty much all it takes to be an artist is intent with a result. Don’t let anyone tell you you aren’t an artist, no matter how you express your intent.
@DarkSheepArts@Curator I have literally seen dirty dishes on a table as art in the Prado museum in Madrid - "Readymade" art. Art requires no skill, no technique, no righteous form. It requires intent and execution.
@DarkSheepArts@Curator Indeed :) Art is such a generic word it's essentially worthless to stress about....if I learned nothing else from 4 years getting my BA, I learned that :D
@Curator I will never forget, I was taking a creative writing class and on the first day we went around the room and talked about our histories. I mentioned that I had a few editorials published and the teacher looked at me and said ‘well, you’re a writer’. Hit me like a ton of bricks, ‘yeah, son of a gun, I am’. BTW, was an excellent class, very supportive. Rock on.
@Curator My current working definition of art is "someone made something that made you feel something". If you are doing that, you are an artist. Medium doesn't matter!
@Curator Sort of agree, but I think there has to be some degree of intentionality to it as well.
These days lots of people take pictures of crap on their phones. It doesn't make them a photographer. I think you have to seek to take photos for more than just recording you and your drunken friends out.
Lots of people write stuff. To be a writer, you should really be taking time to write stuff. Or maybe you should be editing stuff you write.
@Curator I struggled with this for a long time. Now I make art for myself that I’m never going to sell. It’s not about money or a career, it’s about releasing something deep within that I can’t contain.
