Hiya Fediverse peeps 👋👋👋

I'm looking for suggestions / recommendations for a FREE app (Android) that will track my daily running and hiking .....

• I am the least tech-savvy person on the planet

• I am a poor school teacher, Free or inexpensive

@riversidebryan Cyclist here. I am using the free version of Strava. Of course it wants me to upgrade, but I stubbornly ignore those please. The nice thing about Strava is the range of sports/activities it supports.

riversidebryan,

@jeroenvanbergen thanks! I'll give Strava a look. 🙌

SunnJax,

@riversidebryan I use the AllTrails app.

https://www.alltrails.com

riversidebryan,

@SunnJax Nice! Thanks, I'll check it out. 🙌

@riversidebryan I'm using PUMATrac. You can get the map, the distance, the avg pace, calories burned, duration and stats by split, i.e. pace and elevation at every km/mile

If you want there are some guided runs available and plenty of other workouts

riversidebryan,

@s1m0n4 Thank you! I'll take a look. 🙌

@riversidebryan
I've been using the free version of Runkeeper for years.
Will track distance, time, pace, elevation and map your run as well.
Have to carry your phone around but it works for me.

riversidebryan,

@sticklandtim Sounds perfect, thanks, I'll check it out! 🙌

@riversidebryan
This was my run this morning.
Open the app, one tap and run.

riversidebryan,

@sticklandtim Nice, downloading now. 😉🙌

@riversidebryan I really do enjoy (free version) Gaia GPS for hiking and route planning. I use COTREX much more often but that's a state run Colorado only app.

I'm super not tech savvy but I am good at reading maps and I've found them to be quite accurate compared to others on the market.

riversidebryan,

@vapaad
Nice, thank you! I'll check Gaia out. 🙌

MichalBryxi,

@riversidebryan Given the "least tech savvy" part, I think I'd recommend "Google Fit" or alike. You don't need to do anything. It will try to guess when you're biking or running or whatever and automatically track those activities.

ferricoxide,

@MichalBryxi @riversidebryan

Concur. Short of buying a dedicated fitness tracker, Android+Fit is your lowest effort option. Primary problem I have with fit is that, because I'm not wearingy phone, steps accrued just moving about (getting up for glad of water or a snack, getting up to go to the bathroom, etc.) don't get captured. When you have both tracking things, it really illustrates how much small movements one makes in a day (difference between what watch and phone detect).

Neither is great for bike cardio: when I got Achilles tendonitis and had to switch from treadmill to stationary bike, I lost about 3000 steps/day.

riversidebryan,

@MichalBryxi Thank you! I'll take a look at it.

I use a wearable fitness tracker but check this for free apps :

riversidebryan,

@Roadwarrior29 Thank you. Do you mean a smart watch? Smart ring? I always have my phone with me, so hope to find a phone app.

Roadwarrior29,
@Roadwarrior29@mastodon.scot avatar

@riversidebryan yes, I use a watch type tracker but that link has apps for your phone Android and IOS 👍

@riversidebryan before you download a possibly suitable app, have a look at the reviews and how many have downloaded and rated it 👍

riversidebryan,

@Roadwarrior29 Thanks!

@riversidebryan 👍⚘

davrod,

@riversidebryan As in you'll carry your phone with you? Have you checked out Strava?

riversidebryan,

@davrod yes, I don't have the other gadgets like watch and ring. And always carry my phone with me.
I think I looked at Strava, but I'll go look again. Thanks!

davrod,

@riversidebryan Yep, just mentioned it because Strava is essentially the standard for runners and can be used on its own, without a watch.

There are probably other options but I would start there and check whether it meets your needs.

riversidebryan,

@davrod outstanding, thank you, I'll take a look.

edlouwe,

@riversidebryan I've been searching for this too!

is pretty good, but invading and costs for extra features.

is free, but less powerful and privacy invading

There are some good options on F-Droid.org though, but they store data on your phone and not in a cloud, and they're graphically a bit more clunky. Currently I'm using Google Fit for my

MontgomeryGator,

@edlouwe @riversidebryan Try Neostore, it's an F-droid client that looks a lot nicer. It's available in F-droid.

@riversidebryan Add to your post mate - if my experience of doing that is any guide, you'll be inundated with responses 🥰

riversidebryan,

@fkamiah17 thanky thanky 😉
