Okay I know balls are funny but microplastics have literally been found everywhere we looked, so why are testicles getting so much attention?

Like more attention than when the news showed newborn babies even have microplastics (more than adults when comparing fecal samples)

@MsHearthWitch Fabledom! It's from the same folks who made Kingdom and Castles which I also enjoyed and put too many hours into.

Banished is one of the very few games I've 100%-ed and it has a similar flavor to that.

So far I'm not convinced I like it better than Kingdom and Castles, but I'm having fun!! (With the context I can't play most new games on my setup, so my standards might be low 😆)

Tenzaru soba is perfect when it's like this. I got some tempura shrimp that's frozen and I can pop in the air fryer, which is perfection.

So, what's the thing, what's the big thing no one can help you with? How do you cope with it?

vapaad,
@vapaad@wandering.shop avatar

@RickiTarr how none of the men in my husband's family have lived past their mid 60s and my husband is already 8 years older than me. Nagging him about health habits isn't really a winning strategy so I mostly try not to think about it.

All the women in my family live at least to 80. I don't want to be a widow for decades. I'm fairly reckless with some bad habits and I know this is partially why.

vapaad,
@vapaad@wandering.shop avatar

@RickiTarr my dad's health is fairly poor and my mom is very healthy so that's a future I'm preparing for, best wishes for you in it now. My grandma currently lives with my parents so we've all learned a lot from that thankfully.

We aren't having kids and sometimes that terrifies me how alone I might be when I'm elderly. But having kids just because of my fear of being alone sounds incredibly selfish.

vapaad,
@vapaad@wandering.shop avatar

@teamNotLeafy @RickiTarr as a child who moved across the country, I still fully plan on housing/caring for my parents if they ever need. We even have a decade+ long budgeting plan for building an ADU since our house is not very big.

I definitely understand it isn't a guarantee, or desired by many families, my family has always operated this way (our choice!) so planning for a different path is, well, different for me.

Where do you live and how do you feel about it?

Obviously, don't tell me exactly where you live, no actual addresses please! You can be as vague as you like.

I live in Central Missouri in the U.S.

Pros:

This is an absolutely beautiful place, green rolling hills, lots of rivers, lakes, ponds, and natural springs, cool caves to explore.

Lots of farming here, so great access to quality fruits, vegetables, meat, eggs, and dairy.

It's relatively inexpensive to live here compared with other states, because it's a "flyover".

I'm close enough to three major cities, that it's an easy day trip, and I'm about halfway to anywhere in the U.S.

We have one of the best Conservation departments in the U.S. and this is one of the few things that is a bipartisan issue. Lots of awesome nature programs that are free or cheap, state parks, conservation areas, bird watching, hunting, boating, foraging available to everyone.

Cons:

Yeah, it's a big one, it is a RED STATE, while a lot of the cities are blue, there is a large rural population, that votes red. Abortion is not legal here. People often vote against their own self interest.

While I'm not against responsible gun ownership, lots of people aren't responsible, and people have access to guns that definitely should not.

We have very few employee protections here, while the cost of living is relatively low compared with other places, it's taken years to get to a $12 minimum wage, and it's still not enough.

vapaad,
@vapaad@wandering.shop avatar

@RickiTarr Western Colorado in the US

Pros: 4 distinct seasons (okay spring/winter is blurry), large amount of free outdoor recreation access, well maintained city infrastructure by rural standards, cost of living is low by Colorado standards. A national park, a monument, state parks and national forests in all directions. Great local agriculture.

Cons: normal rural healthcare issues, staunchly republican, cost of living rapidly increasing, major lack of public transport or even ride shares.

I didn't expect the tag to have such a high proportion of posts arguing against it. Or more often, taking potshots at straw-man versions. So here's a small corrective.

Capitalist growth will doom even its beneficiaries to a hostile future. We need degrowth at every scale, as soon as possible, by any means necessary. Use adblock, become a quiet quitter, eat less meat, sabotage a golf course, learn to compost. We owe this – and much more – to future generations of the living world.

vapaad,
@vapaad@wandering.shop avatar

@redoak we can either actively work on degrowth or the earth is going to do it for us, the former is the only way that helps vulnerable populations mitigate the worst of it.

Genuinely can't understand the arguments against it (unless they are climate change deniers).

I came home tonight to find a new friend on our doorstep!!!!! The gods have smiled upon me.

Edit: I believe this is a western tiger salamander, I can't imagine who else would be in this high desert environment (it was a rainy day though).

A photo taken of the salamander with flash to show his body. He's probably a good 8 inches long with a brownish green body with a black pattern throughout. He's very very cute.
