@ch1cken@dairokkan I think it's still worth keeping an eye on this, I use Matrix and love it but I can also see how more options that are open source being a good thing for the ecosystem as a whole. Revolt is actively being developed and I think it's still very much open to features like bridges to other services. All it takes is one developer implementing the Matrix protocol to come along and fix most the problems you have with Revolt.
Matrix's Code of Conduct says that they will not act on CoC violations that they find ideologically congenial. That's a blank check for harassment, and it applies to every forum which might be used for technical coordination around Matrix.
I've gotta say - I've been a drone for the past few years. In the past I've been really switched on for new privacy tech and ways to build my own network of my own data, but then in 2018 there was an accessibility explosion and for some reason I just stopped.
So to be getting back into the game as a result of Reddits' collapse and to see places like kbin/lemmy/mastodon thriving, then to see that Discord has a more decentralised competitor in matrix.org technologies and all of the clients being spawned off it. It... it just makes me feel good to be here again. Thanks for waiting for me.

In general, while it makes for convenience for end-users, I'm just not interested in hitching my buggy to another "single point" social media platform.
I already have a Discord account, I don't really need to sign up for a Discord clone based on a "Trust me Bro" sort of guarantee that they won't enshittify it in the future. Because nothing really stops the Revolt developers (and I'm not trying to imply any evil intentions, or even plans on their part) from deciding to accept VC money, or just sell the whole thing outright to $corporation_with_a_dumptruck_full_of_cash, and there's not a thing that a User can do about it.
It's entirely possible that with Matrix, that an individual matrix server administrator (lets call it matrix.foo.bar) could get up to shenanigans, but as it's a federated chat protocol by design, I'm free to take my custom elsewhere (matrix.bar.foo), and basically have the same access to all the things I did before. There is no single point of control, or failure for somebody to break, or sell.
If Revolt is open source then it isn't the same as Discord, because anyone can make their own deployment of it, and anyone can fork it. Realizing those benefits doesn't require federation.
I'm honestly surprised how quickly discord has gone to shit vs. how long everyone I know was using stuff like Skype and TS beforehand.
I also hate how people try to use discord as a replacement for more traditional forums (including stuff like Reddit and kbin) instead of as just a chat and messaging platform. It sucks at it, please stop trying to make it work for that people.
As someone who's only barely used Discord and out of the loop, what's going on with Discord that people are hating on them for, and what has made it "go to shit"?
Removing the discriminators (4 numbers) at the end of usernames even though the majority of users hate the change because it means less chance of getting the username you actually want and less privacy, and recently removing permanent invites for servers that aren't "community servers".
From what I can gather, some people are upset that they have to change their username due to some changes regarding how accounts are handled. Rather than making some minor perceptive changes to their account, those people are dropping discord entirely.
This is my biggest complaint as well, Discord is TERRIBLE for searching for informational posts and replies. Yet people constantly try and use it for that. Every time I see a "visit our discord!" When I'm just wanting to search a forum, I groan and just close the site. I cannot wait for Discord to die off.
Is this decentralised tho? Because that's the only thing that matters, as long as it's server based they can become like Reddit. I am not returning to centralised medias and messengers lol
Benefits over discord? I use discord to video chat with my out of town buddies. That's about it. What are some reasons I should switch? This isn't a loaded question btw, I've been a fan of FOSS and a free and open internet since I was a kid in the 90s. Grew up on anarchist punk and all. I'm just asking because I gotta convince the suits it's better.

Element-native group calls are currently being worked on. There's feature_group_calls setting, but it's in "labs" settings, which, in turn, are hidden by default.
I don't think there's anything new happening; but generally, Discord is a for-profit company which stores everyone's chat history in plain-text on their servers and any files, images, video, etc... that you share are also publicly accessible (albeit, you'd need a link; but anyone with the link can get to files, I'm pretty sure).
So many look at Discord as "only a matter of time" before they start getting shitty and squeezing for money at the expense of their users' experience and privacy.
I'm not personally aware of Discord having sold data to third parties for money or anything... but I definitely don't like the idea that my data and chat history is just... sitting there, for anyone at the company to start profiling for... anything or nothing. Like, if I'm on a server and someone there starts mentioning piracy, am I someday going to get pulled into court for allowing conspiracy to commit crimes to happen unchecked in a server I happen to follow?
Anyway, I keep my eyes out for something good to come along with more privacy; but I'm also not racing to get off the platform quite yet.
People are getting frustrated on how discord are making bad decisions and not listening to the community. Just recently the username change happened where they went from using discriminators so people can basically have whatever name they wanted to unique usernames. People were not happy.
My theory is that Discord may be trying to create a Twitter replacement platform that's integrated into the existing Discord platform, and that @usernames without discriminators will be easier for the Twitter audience to adopt.
There have been quite a lot of controversial changes that Discord has implemented, chief among which is the new username system that replaces the username#nnnn format that worked for most users with a @username format, under the pretext that "it would be easier for the users"
The username change sucks for sure, and I was so confused while reading the pretext for it, it really sounds like bullshit.
However I still think it's a great platform for its use cases and I wouldn't stop using it just because of the username change and the Nitro stuff.
If an open source alternative looks promising and gathers a good user base, I'll consider switching as long as my friends are into it, but it was hard enough to convince them to use Signal instead of Messenger lol
I thought my username was unique but due to this new update i had to add numbers to my username, i don't know whats the point of changing to this new system
I mean, it is easier. It's also not just replacing the #nnnn, but also it fixes the terrible choice they made of being case sensitive and allowing special characters, which can make it almost impossible to find some usernames unless copied carefully.
