Poll: If goes ahead with its plan to add , will you follow one or more Threads users in your Mastodon account?

Andres,
@Andres@mastodon.hardcoredevs.com avatar

@ricmac
My answer is no because this instance is blocking Threads.
A few reasons:

  • Too many users, it's not technically possible to enable federation.
  • No moderation from Threads, enabling hate groups and doing nothing would left me with the moderation tasks.
  • Moral conflict with the company, enabling genocide is not ok with me.
  • Too much centralization, really we don't have much voice on how a private company uses the ActivityPub, I'm from the original ideal of decentralized networking.

@Andres @ricmac This is the most reasonable answer. If Threads was a regular Fediverse instance it'd break 99% of all server's rules - hence it shouldn't be treated differently.

@ricmac

How do you identify accounts on Threads?

@threads?

I won't be interacting with them at all if I know how to identify them.

@olav@theweird.space avatar

@ricmac
Late to the party but there are folks I'm still trying to prise away from Meta. Idgaf celebrities. I have a philosophical problem with government/elected representatives moving from one vulture to another, particularly when there's an alternative that will be compatible with that audience

AnimeLondon,
@AnimeLondon@ani.work avatar

@ricmac I'm going to follow as many as possible to poach as many users over to

varpness,
@varpness@mastodon.social avatar

@ricmac I don't see why not.

petrescatraian,

@ricmac if I follow them over on insta/fb already, I likely will

jonkloske,

@ricmac It’ll probably be the only way to see your friends posts without drowning in utter random garbage you aren’f interested in.

yashima,

@ricmac I think it unlikely I would follow many over there. If it is like any other follow, I might give it a try. If there is any technical hassle involved or I feel like just by following someone I might be playing into Meta‘s hands, I would probably think it is not worth it and stop. I am absolutely in favor of treading extremely carefully around an entity as untrustworthy as Meta.

chloe,

@ricmac i’m torn. it sounds like they’ll allow all sorts of nasty nazis and terfs so they’re already a terrible fediverse steward by being largely unmoderated and on that grounds i shouldn’t federate with them to protect myself. that being said the temptation is gonna be pretty damn strong if someone i know’s only presence is another another hellsite clone that just happens to federate. the middle ground is probably set it to silence the instance

erlend,
@erlend@writing.exchange avatar

@ricmac yes. Following specific users on Threads, as opposed to plugging in their entire feed indiscriminately, seems like the most sensible default for fedizens.

Most importantly, I want to follow artists who have no other choice than to use a global-scale platform like Threads due to its reach:

WolvericCatkin,

@ricmac I can't think of any accounts or anyone on Threads I'd be interested in following, but on the basis of wanting to avoid my data being shared with Facebook where possible, I expect I'll block the domain outright, if MAUK doesn't do it instance-wide first...

scott,
@scott@tams.tech avatar

@ricmac I really want to, there are a few accounts I'd like to follow on here from instagram, but I can't justify not defederating.

    @drandrewv2 what were the main reasons your instance decided no? It sounds like the server maintainer didn’t just make an executive decision (which is great), so I’m curious what your community said.

    twipped,
    @twipped@twipped.social avatar

    @ricmac @Gargron this poll precludes that there will be accounts on threads that I will want to follow.

    @jstevenyork@mastodon.social avatar

    @ricmac I'm deeply uneasy about Threads, but if there are creators I enjoy, and if following doesnt lead to tracking or targeting, I'd think about it. No way in hell I'd have an account there.

    Jeffrey_Smith,

    @ricmac

    Exposing Meta users to the fediverse is a subversive activity that should help people know there's a better way to do social media. I trust Meta not at all, though.

    nightpaws,

    @ricmac My Server is Silencing threads, but it's going to be up to the people using it to decide if they want to or not. Me? No idea yet, ideally not - but when was the last time anything was ideal?

    ricmac,
    @ricmac@mastodon.social avatar

    @nightpaws just to clarify: so if you decided you personally do want to federate, you would need to move to another server?

    nightpaws,

    @ricmac so, if a server is set to silenced it won't automatically add stuff from there to the"federated" feed. You can still follow people but you have to actually look them up to follow.

    So if your (e.g.) aunt is on threads you could follow just her, but the thousand spambots would get ignored by my server as you don't follow them.

    Keeps moderation manageable on my end but if you wanted a totally unfiltered feed you'd need another server. (Better hosting your own in that case)

    eRatt,
    @eRatt@gaygeek.social avatar

    @ricmac no.

    ErikUden,
    @ErikUden@mastodon.de avatar

    @ricmac If Threads was an instance it'd violate the rules of 99% of your servers, so this shouldn't be a question!

    They're hosting fascists, Neo Nazis, and accounts that actively participate in doxxing / deny trans rights, etc.

    If this was a Fedi instance and not Facebook's new project, it'd without a question be Fediblocked out of existence...

    geographile,
    @geographile@mastodon.social avatar

    @ricmac yes but not hell yeah. There are a few people I already know and care about who have accounts, and I would rather follow them here than go check in there on a regular basis.

    cozymel,

    @ricmac I'll probably treat them the same way I treat mastodon dot social users: with a healthy dose of caution and a daily prayer of defederation

    ricmac,
    @ricmac@mastodon.social avatar

    @cozymel many mastodon dot social users join here because it’s the easiest way to join Mastodon. Others, like me, joined years ago and don’t have any reason to move somewhere else, because it’s a perfectly fine instance that is well managed. So are you against all large instances? (Just curious)

    cozymel,

    @ricmac maybe it seems well managed to you, but you're seeing it from the inside, and not from the viewpoint of the rest of the fediverse. I've encountered two major problems with mastodon dot social: spam/bots, and in my experience the majority of its users don't include and . It's like they were onramped but never properly onboarded (or don't care, which may possibly be worse). I'm not against large instances as a rule, but--at least in the case of mastodon dot social--they do seem to breed problematic users.

    steveriggins,
    @steveriggins@mastodon.social avatar

    @ricmac @Em0nM4stodon Depends on who it is, but if they have chosen Threads as their platform and I want to follow them, sure. I would not see it different as any other ActivityPub source.
