West Bank: Israel Defense Forces accused of possible war crime

In the early afternoon of 29 November last year, several Palestinian boys descended on to their street in the occupied West Bank, where they often played together.

Minutes later, two of them lay dead from gunshots fired by Israeli soldiers - Basil, 15, and eight-year-old Adam.

As part of an investigation into the conduct of Israel’s security forces in the West Bank, which has been under military occupation for more than half a century, the BBC has pieced together what happened on the day the two boys were killed.

Mobile phone and CCTV footage, information about the movements of Israel’s military, witness testimony and detailed investigation of the scene, including taking measurements, combine to reveal evidence suggesting serious human rights violations.

xdr,

Funny how IDF does a war crime on video and its alleged. When a lone gunman attacks a soldier, its terorism and entire population must be punished regardless of facts. The allegation is enough as in the case of unrwa

Hyperreality,

Here's an article explaining why the BBC doesn't call Hamas terrorists.

And here’s an article of the BBC lying that they saw evidence of things later proven did not exist according to the UN report of Pramilla Patten. In order to manufacture consent for Genocide. Very unbiased by the BBC.

The BBC has seen and heard evidence of rape, sexual violence and mutilation of women during the 7 October Hamas attacks.

Israel’s Women’s Empowerment Minister, May Golan, told the BBC that a few victims of rape or sexual assault had survived the attacks, and that they were all currently receiving psychiatric treatment.

Accused? We have video evidence of these boys being shot by the IDF

NSFL (Death): Videos of these Palestinian children being murdered by IDF terrorists

I like how “the boys lay dead” instead of being killed.

john89,

Thanks for sharing this.

Not sure why news articles never include the footage that they’re reporting on.

There’s many reasons … maybe the news source doesn’t have publishing rights to the video, sometimes it’s out of respect for the dead (that they not be used as “death porn” for clicks), and sometimes it’s for the living who don’t need to see their son - yet again - lying slaughtered in the street.

Graphic footage of people being murdered in Western media is only for when we need to manufacture consent for Genocide. Remember kids only Hamas shoots people.

phoneymouse, (edited )

Seems like a possible, hypothetical scenario that happened there. Looks like some inadvertent collateral damage. Looks like these boys walked into the line of Israeli fire, according to some critics, according to Hamas, according to Pro-Palestinian voices, according to anti-Semitic opponents of Israel. Looks like an isolated incident.

Linkerbaan,
@Linkerbaan@lemmy.world avatar

I think we can all agree that this is extremely nuanced. This made someone remember October 7 which means both israel and Hamas are at fault here.

In fact, only Hamas is at fault here. And not israel. Blaming israel would be anti-Semitic.

Israel needs to go after bad actors among their ranks, and if they're unwilling I want the US to do more sanctions on them. This is unacceptable, tacit approval of such violence against children only serves Hamas.

Hegar,

The bad actors are in charge and their goal is genocide. It's just a bit naive to suggest they will 'go after' their own supporters carrying out their policy aims.

Zehzin,
@Zehzin@lemmy.world avatar

How long until we move from “a few bad actors” to “they were just following orders”

glimse,

If they don’t stop killing kids, the US should make killing kids a bit more expensive for them!

The whole world needs to condemn the Israeli government…but they won’t

DarkGamer,
DarkGamer avatar

There's no evidence presented in this article this was perpetrated by the Israeli government and not just some soldiers.

thesporkeffect,

When US soldiers killed women and children in Vietnam, that WAS the US government. Same thing here

glimse,

Just because the killing wasn’t explicitly ordered by the Israeli government? Despite them being there because of the government? Despite targeting civilians being a recurring theme of this invasion?

Until Israel starts putting soldiers on trial, these are government-sponsored murders

girlfreddy,
@girlfreddy@lemmy.ca avatar

True, but the following paragraphs from the article are telling …

But several former Israeli soldiers who viewed the BBC’s evidence said they believed Israel’s legal system would protect soldiers who used lethal force, regardless of whether it was justified.

One former sergeant who served in the West Bank from 2018-2020, said it would take “an Israeli soldier murdering a Palestinian at zero range for it to be taken as murder in Israel” and “there is basically a 0% chance of criminal proceedings” against a soldier in cases such as Adam’s.

DarkGamer,

Right, that's the tacit approval I mentioned in my original comment, they need to prosecute Israeli soldiers and civilians who break the law and change that perception.

PanArab,

You need to watch some testimonies by repenting Israeli occupation forces. It is pretty much cultural at this point

Alterforlett,

Not to take away from a lot of the other despicable shit done by Israel’s defence forces, but you have to be a special kind of awful to murder a child. Doesn’t matter if you believe you’re entitled to the land or whatnot. There’s really no way to justify killing children. Only hope the people who are responsible for actions like these gain some sort of awareness and have to live the rest of their lives with what they’ve done.

ButtermilkBiscuit,

A special kind of awful, in this case a state sponsored terrorist. The Israel idf is the militant terrorist arm of the Israeli government. They exist to enforce apartheid, subjugate Palestinians, and execute civilians without any due process.

LordWiggle,
@LordWiggle@lemmy.world avatar

They are committing loads of war crimes and crimes against humanity. Why is it news they are being accused of this single crime done in West Bank? Sounds like it’s an isolated incident while in fact it’s daily business.

Viking_Hippie,

Why is it news they are being accused of this single crime done in West Bank?

Because the establishment media are consciously trying to shift focus away from Gaza and look less like the genocide apologists they are by strategically objecting to the fewer and (in most cases) lesser crimes against humanity that the apartheid regime is committing in the West Bank.

LordWiggle,
@LordWiggle@lemmy.world avatar

Damn. Disgusting. After everything in Syria, Rwanda, Ukraine, China, etc, we as western countries claim “we are better than this.” While in fact in western countries we have people with power capable of approving and justifying horrific acts which are the same or even worse then what for example Russia does in Ukraine or China with the concentration camps. THERE IS NOTHING WHICH CAN JUSTIFY GENOCIDE. This shit is fucking embarrassing.

Viking_Hippie,
girlfreddy,
@girlfreddy@lemmy.ca avatar

Because the investigation was concluded and the findings released. Same way cops would do it in most Western nations.

Viking_Hippie,

If the investigation is concluded, why are they pretending that it’s still just an allegation? Other than maybe the usual “the Israeli government can do nothing wrong” reasons, that is…

girlfreddy,
@girlfreddy@lemmy.ca avatar

Because the BBC did the investigation, not an governmental or international police service. Therefore they can’t (and shouldn’t) find guilt or innocence. They can only show the facts as they have found them, which then allows the gov/international services to decide whether or not to investigate.

It’s not a perfect system, but then which one is these days?

Viking_Hippie,

they can’t (and shouldn’t) find guilt or innocence.

Then there’s no fucking point! That’s why you investigate accusations: to reach conclusions one way or the other. Otherwise it’s nothing but pretense.
