I mean there's Reddit ofc, as well as Twitter in its entirety, Discord is implementing some dumb updates, there are issues with Tumblr as well as everything to do with Meta, and I'm sure there are plenty more (and I haven't even touched other digital media, for example the Sims). Why is it all happening in the span of about a...
ou might have seen that we've been defederated from beehaw.org. I think there's some necessary context to understand what this means to the users on this instance....
This is a really good explanation for how defederation works.
I understand your point that Beehaw defederating from two subs for moderation and user management seems like an extreme reaction. But it's one I kind of expected from them given Beehaw's philosophies as as an instance.
Their detailed posts about what Beehaw is always made it very clear to me they think carefully about how they run their space and the users they want to grant access to. They really prioritise making their instance a safe space for well-meaning discussion through their vetted registrations.
I'm not an admin. I'm not an experienced Lemmy user. I'm not someone who has had experience moderating and being an admin on several communities before. They have and I've also seen activity on the Lemmy repo from them showing they have dev experience too.
As you pointed out, the entire site of 12k users is currently managed by 4 people who seem to have quite a lot of experience managing communities. That's a big workload. I've been using both Beehaw and Kbin since Reddit's awful API changes to see how both places grow and so far I've found Beehaw to be a very enjoyable experience with a pretty high engagement rate. I usually get hella upvotes and replies to anything I say. It does feel like a pretty active, close-knit place of well-meaning people even at this early stage. I think they're running Beehaw pretty well so far. Kbin is very solid too, but Beehaw I've found tends to have a deeper level of engagement and longer, more in-depth post styles that I prefer.
I know any instances with open registration could hop in and contribute to Beehaw, so this issue they have of not being able to vet and control users isn't unique to those two instances. But given so far the place to me as a user still feels the same as when I joined a few days ago more or less, I'm going to take them at their word that they're getting an influx of activity that isn't a particularly good fit for Beehaw for now. There's a lot of instances that could defederate from. 2 is not a huge number so far. Plus they did explicitly say at the end this is not a permanent decision, they may very well change their minds later on.
So personally, I respect and understand Beehaw's decision at this moment. Lets give things time and see how things develop. It's definitely a temporary, broad axe to cutting an apple type solution to their troll problem - which may very well continue as Lemmy gets more popularity as a platform overall - but I think they want to be specific about who they pull into their moderation team to ensure the vibe of Beehaw is maintained. Lets give it some time to see what happens.
I have no idea what’s going on myself honestly lol. I just made a Kbin account so I can see and comment on this thread even though it’s a thread that came from lemmy it looks like considering it states (lemmy.world). I’m confused why I’m seeing this thread. Was it shared to the Kbin server? And why can’t I comment and upvote posts on lemmy.one for example? Shouldn’t I be able to due to everything being connected in the fediverse?
Signs of the #RedditMigration in action: Three of the top 6 fastest growing #Fediverse servers are not only not Mastodon.social but they are not even microblogging servers - but rather are #Threadiverse servers.
That is only seriously good for the entire Fedi infrastructure. Diversity is strength.
So, what’s the general consensus on Lemmy? Is it a toxic project with questionable roots, or just one with some really bad PR? The app is not especially impressive to me, thus far, but I’m told it’s more advanced than Kbin, and I may not be configured properly.
@shoq
I wrote this elsewhere, my possibly wrong initial impressions on trying both Lemmy and Kbin so far.
Kbin seems much more integrated in to Fediverse (sees more posts & follow user!) although threads vs microblog UI needs optimise. Also magazine is a silly name for a community tbh. :)
I see Lemmy's tankie dev team as real problem, & makes me question data / trust too.
Kbin while young seems better.
Lemmy feels closed, no followings, no microblogs, no transfer account functionality.
See here. you can see this mastodon user's post (which to them looks like a regular tweet on twitter does) ends up in our random microblogs section.
We can also view their profile directly as well as follow them to have their posts appear in our microblogs (as well as threads if they go out of their way to make one).
It seems kbin microblogs appear as threads/comments to you on lemmy. so I have to imagine mastodon posts might be similar?
I actually started on the lemmy side of things but the politics and drama on beehaw and lemmy.ml just drove me away. It was also crazy to me the devs of lemmy.ml were openly denying genocide and other atrocities (and it some instances almost cheering for that stuff) but beehaw refused to defederate with them. And then what would you know, beehaw defederates from.. wait what? lemmy.world and sh.itjust.works?? confused_will_smith.jpg
anyways, the drama and politics are stupid and will drive away new users from joining. the main dev at kbin has been very proactive at answering bug and feature request tickets. Me and some others set up some new kbin instances to help share the load and a few of us devs are hoping to help out ernest with the dev work he has for kbin
As others have said, come join us in kbin land :) There are some other kbin instances listed here on the project website if you want to sign up on one other than the main instance: https://kbin.pub/en
I just opened up user registrations on mine yesterday so it hasn't been added to that page yet.
I say come give it a try! It's cool that kbin has lemmy + kbin + mastodon integration. Kind of a one stop hub for all the content. I'm hoping down the line we can get matrix integration and some other fediverse stuff.
Hey everyone. I'm new to all this - as are most people I realize - but I've been really enjoying Lemmy so far. I'm subscribed to alternatives here of subreddits I frequented on Reddit and been participating in discussions and engaging with the communities as well. Overall, it's been good!...
I tried to subscribe to some magazines from my own private lemmy instance, no errors are thrown in the log, but there is no activity following up. The subscription stays pending and no posts show up.
My guess would be that kbin.social is only talking with some bigger lemmy instances?
A note on the current #Threadiverse expansion: As a few have pointed out, #Lemmy and #Kbin are OK, but as far being Reddit replacements, remember that neither software is really stable or mature, especially in terms of moderation. It'll be a while before we can really consider either one as a good place to build a community.
FWIW #Friendica is probably the most reliable #Fedi software for groups right now, although it doesn't really replicate Reddit at all. If you do like forums though, it's pretty sweet—and it federates pretty much perfectly with Lemmy and Kbin servers, as well as other servers like Mastodon, #Misskey#Calckey, #Hubzilla, and even #diaspora. #FediGroups
#Reddit is reportedly removing moderators that are keeping subreddits dark.
Now is an important time to say "hold the line". There is no democracy on Reddit, there will never be a palatable pricing model that doesn't aim to kill third-party apps, the only thing left to be done is to leave and delete all your content on the way out.
In fact, for all you #GDPR wielding Europeans - I'd even recommend filing a deletion request to make sure it stays deleted.
Also, Kbin is awesome. It's got teething issues and it's not suuuper ready yet - but it's the Reddit we need now. At least it's not developed and owned by unsavoury people. #redditMigration#privacy
when you federate with an instance you get copies of the post. with mastodon you could download your data and move to another instance, and i have to imagine that feature is on the roadmap for kbin as well (but kbin is still very new so not yet).
I think Reddit has shown it is no longer is the same open source, transparent, and community driven platform it used to be. Today's Reddit is huge, and it will still be relevant 5 years from now, and I don't think it will have a Digg incident. So to that end, the sub should just stay open to help new players....
I'm fine with posts like this being posted. It drives discussion, or at least deeper thought. Eventually, I think that the sub should reopen, but not right now, mostly for news/new players. Reddit has proved they can't be trusted, but they're also big enough now that it barely even matters. I hate to say it, but Reddit is too big of a resource to lose forever, whether it be for asking questions, or already having them answered. It was usually more polite than forums when it came to help, and infinitely easier to read, so, once I learned that putting Reddit in my google search gave high quality answers, that's essentially all I did if I ever had a problem.
While I'd love if kbin became big, I mostly made this as a "just in case", though I've grown to enjoy kbin quite a bit during the blackout, so as long as I'm a mod here I'll still be making sure things are fine and trying my best to keep things even slightly active (Was never a poster on reddit, only really a commenter). Still, I'm ready to hand off the mag to the r/arknights mods should they ever want to migrate the sub.
Given today's revelations with Reddit's CEO and his sense of entitlement, I think there is a serious risk of losing our ability to bulk-change the text of our posts before removing our accounts, so I'd like to do this sooner than later....
As both Lemmy and Mastodon are both part of the Fediverse, isn't there a way to use your Lemmy account to reply to a Mastodon post? And if so, what would the format of the URL need to look like for making that possible?...
You can see here on kbin it gets auto-sorted into our random magazine, under the microblogs section. This is how microblog posts work here: under microblogs, and then under a magazine if one is assigned to it, otherwise to random.
mastodon doesn't have communities/magazines like instances on the threadiverse do. instead, they categorize things by individual users, and allow people to search via hashtags. here on kbin, mastodon posts are pulled into our magazines and we have a dedicated "microblog" section for them.
Mastodon users replying to threads will show up like other comments/posts do.
Basically: you follow mastodon users not mastodon communities (which don't exist)
Edit: I should also mention that you can pull up a user's profile the same way you do for a community (just with the user profile url format instead)
Why does it feel like we're at a point where every social media + other digital media are making shitty decisions and falling apart?

How the beehaw defederation affects us
ou might have seen that we've been defederated from beehaw.org. I think there's some necessary context to understand what this means to the users on this instance....
So... what's Kbin mascot? I tried with one but doesn't work, I don't wanna see Magazines using the alien mascot from that one site.
I mean, we have the chance to create the new Mickey Mouse. I'd think people would be going nuts with idea ha ha ha!
It was confusing at first (lemmy.world)
Is there a way to see kbin microblogs from Lemmy?
This has probably already been asked before, but:...
Is lemmy.ml just a tankie recruitment zone? (lemmy.ml)
The shear amount of tankiness over on lemmy.ml is making me seriously consider leaving the platform.
Can Lemmy & Kbin interface with eachother?
Hey everyone. I'm new to all this - as are most people I realize - but I've been really enjoying Lemmy so far. I'm subscribed to alternatives here of subreddits I frequented on Reddit and been participating in discussions and engaging with the communities as well. Overall, it's been good!...
