That seems to be what has just happened. Beehaw, one of the larger instances, has just defederated lemmy.world and sh.itjust.works. I can see both side from fmhy.ml or kbin at the moment.
I'm wondering if it would be easier to observe all this from a personal server that federates with everyone instead of my account and feed being determined by the relations of tankies to queer safe spaces in real time
Spent a decade on Reddit (using Alien Blue, then Apollo exclusively) but now spending 90% of that time on kbin/fediverse leaning heavily on kbin progressive web app on iPad/iPhone. Doing most what I need it to like Apollo did, and even though it’s an early prototype it’s already way better than the official Reddit iOS app!
I guess I'm both intimidated and confused as I don't quite understand the fediverse. I joined kbin and everything is very tech heavy and over my head. Every day it becomes a bit clearer, however. I'm not proud of being tech illiterate and want to learn.
I'm doing my best to stay off reddit and find content and conversation elsewhere. I get reddit wants to be profitable and is doing what they think will achieve that, but those actions conflict with my values etc. Been enjoying exploring and participating in tildes and kbin.
Another update and possibly a solution for some case where posts were not properly deleted. Seems I jumped the gun on this and the restores haven't been intentional - at least not in this particular case....
Following the announcement by beehaw admins to defederate from lemmy.world and sh.itjust.works, there has been many posts and messages regarding that decisions and what other instances will do....
I personally believe Lemmy/kbin can only thrive if there is a free flow of content between different instances
I personally disagree. There will be entirely private instances, there will be instances with highly restricted federation. There will be instances that federate with most and there will be instances that federate without restriction. That's the beauty of the model and that's why kbin and lemmy with thrive.
Most people access the Fediverse through one of the large instances: lemmy.world, kbin, or beehaw. New or small instances of Lemmy have no content by default, and can most easily get content by linking to larger Lemmy instances. This is done manually one "Community" at a time (I spent 15 minutes doing this yesterday). Meanwhile,...
Thank you for filing the bug report - that is really weird... I hope kbin fixes that issue quickly because that's definitely gonna lead to some very off interpretations.
I read The Verge's latest interview with Steve Huffman here and it seems as though the Reddit blackout is having little to no effect. It also seems as though the communities at large don't really care and will probably just use the official app or don't really know there are 3rd party ones. So it seems this will pass and be...
I think one needs to see the bigger picture here. The protest that started earlier this week might not have left a big dent in reddit yet. What it did though is raise attention and increase awareness for alternative news/content aggregators like kbin. They're not anywhere close to competing with reddit yet but the door got opened.
The shortsighted reddit politics basically helped to kickstart their own future competitors. If we do our best here and bring in good content, comment and get past only consuming there will be a real chance to become more appealing than reddit in the long run. I'm definitely here to stay.
Not exactly. Think of other instances as just other forums that all connect to each other (which is what federation is). Lemmy is essentially just different forum software, but it still federates with kbin. If you want to find the subs/magazines/communities/whatever-we're-calling-them mentioned above in kbin, go to the Magazines tab at the top and search for their names, or just change the URL to kbin.social/m/<community-name-without-the-!>, such as https://kbin.social/m/mildlyinfuriating@lemmy.world for mildlyinfuriating. As long as the subs are federated, you can subscribe and interact with them from kbin even if they exist on a lemmy instance (and vice versa).
I mean just look at mastodon and how omnipresent the mascot is. It would be relly great if Kbin had one, too. Sadly I am neigher an artist nor super creative when it comes to this stuff
Notice: kbin's reached the point all tech reaches where pics of naked people (and artistic renditions of naked people) are beginning to show up -- especially as federation is now up and running. And they should! Bodies are beautiful.
BUUUUUUUUT if you are sensitive to it or browse at work, kindly remember to 1. hover over your username in the top-right ... 2. go to Settings ... 3. and under General/Appearance choose "Hide adult content" ... in order to prevent a good amount of this from showing on your homepage.
I say "a good amount" because it is early days and some content creators are either forgetting to or maliciously choose not to select "NSFW" when submitting. Protect yourself. And yes, if you see any content that is absolutely unacceptable, report it (in the "more" menu on a post).
Exactly... occasionally when I'm trying to research something and I've exhausted the information available on google / reddit I'll go to twitter to try to search for something... and 90% of what you can find there is just spam. I used to subscribe to a bunch of comedians and journalists and it served as a nice news / joke feed but things really took a dive after 2016 and made the whole platform horrible to use.
I feel like Kbin's combination of mastodon and a reddit-like community system could solve a lot of problems with both reddit and twitter.
So the mods are reopening because they're being pressured. If the good mods would just... Leave, pick up an alternative. ANY alternative at this point. Lemmy, KBin, Squabbles, Spyke, I don't care. They could've migrated the vast majority of their community over before the API changes hit. But they expected a limited blackout to change spez' mind, and it didn't.
If they left, Reddit would be forced to reopen those subreddits with subpar mod teams. Even if they got great mods, they'd be spread so thin they couldn't possibly keep everything up. The communities would fall to shambles, and eventually even the most stubborn Reddit users would go looking for something else, and they'd find the community they loved in a new home, moderated by the same great teams, and they'd pick that up, too. Reddit would be done.
I think they're falling into a Sunk Cost Fallacy, honestly. They've put so much work into this community, into building this house. They're realizing now they built it on top of a fault line, and now the earth is shaking and its not stopping anytime soon. But they've already put so much work in, that they refuse to call it quits and go build again somewhere safer. It's a shame.
EDIT: I would greatly prefer they migrate to something decentralized and FOSS. Lemmy would be my #1 pick, personally. But pretty much anything would be better than letting Reddit bully them into free labor again.
It annoyed me such much that I checked out and moved to Kbin. No matter what instance of Lemmy I was using I had the same issue you are experiencing. Everything has been working great over here so far!
The #redditblackout has moved to a new stage... from a two day blackout to indefinitely shutting down... to people moving away entirely.
Yes, r/startrek has lifted off from #reddit and moved to #lemmy -- and with it, a realization that we need an easy way to help people find their new, old communities that have moved from reddit to #lemmy#kbin and whatever else pops up.
I started a quick and dirty list that you can share and contribute to (PRs welcome!).
A portal for new users to join Mastodon, exiting users to enrich accounts with more follows, and for organizing to help #TakeBackSocial and spread the open social web and the Fediverse.
In solidarity with the developers and small companies that have come to expect and rely on access to Reddit’s API, /system76 and /pop-os subreddits have been taken private for the June 12th protest. #RedditBlackout
Trying to give #kbin a try - #Reddit is one of those sites that I found useful but never really loved the culture of, so a #fediverse alternative seems like something I'd enjoy. Anyone experienced with it have any tips for getting started?
@Dunstable A quick follow up. When you find a Lemmy community copy the address (i.e. !technology) and go to Magazines on Kbin (https://kbin.social/magazines) and paste the address in the magazine search, without the ! at the front.
You can also use the magazine search to look for topics across all federated instances. Just keep in mind that the subscription numbers are local counts. So a highly active community on a Lemmy instance may appear inactive on your instance.
Hey all! I’ve been a mastodon user for a while, but with the recent reddit nonsense I’ve been digging into forum-style Fediverse platforms like Lemmy and Kbin. I don’t know if i understand the distinction a ton yet. I’ve make a Lemmy.world account and this Kbin one, but I’m not sure if i need to? I would love to just have one account and follow the threads/subs from both. Is that possible?
I’ve made a clone of a reddit sub i loved to frequent, /crtgaming over on Lemmy.world: lemmy.world/c/crtgaming. But then I found https://kbin.social/m/CRTs (which i guess are called “magazines” here). And I’m not confident both need to exist? Or maybe the do and we can be sister subs? Idk. any advice would be much appreciated!

Reddit refugees assemble!!!
Nothing important here. I just want to see how many people are moving away from Reddit.

How much of an impact is the protest really having on Reddit?

I'm no artist, but I thought Kbin could use a mascot. Shall we all create one together?

Spread Mastodon.org is now LIVE (spreadmastodon.org)
A portal for new users to join Mastodon, exiting users to enrich accounts with more follows, and for organizing to help #TakeBackSocial and spread the open social web and the Fediverse.
Is it possible to subscribe to kbin instances or whatever they're called from Lemmy?
I follow mma and see they have a community on kbin. Can I somehow subscribe to it from lemmy.one?
Some of my comments aren't appearing here.
Hey folks,...
