Y’all: I have been wrestling with kbin on the fedia.io instance, but I want to take a step back and give some perspective. Kbin is new, it’s growing crazy fast, and it really wasn’t in a place to support the migration from Reddit. Despite that, @ernest has been working his tail off knocking down issues and helpings instance admins.
Reddit certainly seems to be tripling down on their position and I think kbin is shaping up to be a worthy alternative. If you like kbin (on whatever instance you use it on) and want to see it grow, may I ask that you throw some money Ernest’s way? (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/kbin)
I want to publicly thank Ernest for kbin and for his contributions to our growing fediverse community.
@jerry@ernest I’ve been getting into the kbin code the last 2 days, getting. Familiar with symfony, etc.
I’ve been primarily focused on reworking the docker config to be easier to spin up, not dependent on OS tools besides docker, and eventually a suite of containers suitable for publishing pre-built.
Because they don't get listed by browse.feddit.de you'll want to browse https://kbin.social/magazines to browse "magazines", which is what they call communities...
@FieryDarkstar yeah, it's very early days — I've no doubt that either kbin or lemmy will grow up to be a fantastic piece of software in the future for folks who like forum/reddit-style social media.
However, right now, it's just not there where it needs to be for mass-adoption
I've deleted all my comments from the last 10 years a few days ago. Riding it out until the 30th, and then I'm out. kbin looks like the perfect replacement/alternative that I've seen so far.
Looks like #Lemmy and #Kbin keep being mentioned together, which to me suggests we might have averted "mastodonization" of the #threadiverse — i.e. a situation where the whole network gets identified with a single piece of software. 🎉
@hook@rysiek the biggest difference I would give between the two is kbin federates nicely with microblog content. kbin posts will show up properly on something like mastodon instead of just being a headline and link like lemmy stuff. also you can view, follow and create microblog content on kbin
if you want to try it out, I'm hosting an instance with open registration at https://fedi196.gay
Sorry, I’m very new to Lemmy and I was also posting from a mobile app so I just pulled the community. I’m not fully versed on the difference between how kbin communities name their short name versus Lemmy and I was pretty sure the ! didn’t work but I didn’t know it was @
Things have been hit and miss for the last day or so in terms of viewing other communities on other instances. You may find that in a few hours it's showing posts when browsing from kbin, I'm seeing other ones that were empty now starting to show posts and comments.
Interesting, that community doesn't show anything when I browse to it from kbin.
What I'm doing is clicking the magazines button at the top of the kbin page and searching for motorcycles. I see kbin.social/m/motorcycles which is where I've posted and commented. At the end of the search list I see the lemmy.world/c/motorcycles community, but it shows no activity and only 1 subscriber. When I click on it, I get a message saying "The magazine from the federated server may be incomplete. Browse more on the original instance."
When I click the link to browse more, it takes me to the actual lemmy.world page where there is a bit of content and I can see that there are roughly 250 subscribers.
Maybe I'm not understanding how federation works, because I was under the impression that I was supposed to be able to interact with communities from lemmy.world (or other federated instances) from within kbin.social. I must be missing something and I consider myself somewhat technical so I imagine this is extra confusing for someone non-technical.
That Reddit will not shut down. It will take the hit and go on and probably make at least some money. Only, it will be a much different place, more like Facebook or Instagram, in that it will be full of ads and less specific information....
One on Lemmy, one on kbin, so far. Trying out both, seeing how I feel about them. So far I'm more of a Mastodon user. But reddit wasn't my hangout, either.
Question From Former Redditor
I came over from Reddit and I am confused!
Firstly, is Lemmy, Mastodon, and Kbin the same?
Secondly, can I see the same content on Kbin as I would if I was on, say, Lemmy? Like a “cross-post”. I’ve seen some posts where someone says “replying from Lemmy” on Kbin. So would I be seeing the same exact posts on Kbin as I would Lemmy/Mastodon?
I made accounts on all 3 but I am totally lost and confused. Can someone ELI5 (or something) to help me better understand?
Former Redditor, Lost & Confused
P.s. is this post even allowed? I don’t know what I’m doing if you can’t tell. :, (
P.p.s. I am on mobile so if formatting is an issue or weird, that may be why…
Actually, kbin.social IS your home instance. So if you go here: https://kbin.social/magazines you can subscribe to all the communities - "magazines" - on kbin.social. And if those aren't enough for you, grab the URL of a community on another instance of kbin or lemmy and paste it into the search bar there on the magazines page, and it will be listed there.
There's a lot of noise with this one. Among the noisiest we've seen. Please know that our teams are on it, and like all blowups on Reddit, this one will pass as well. The most important things we can do right now are stay focused, adapt to challenges, and keep moving forward. We absolutely must ship what we said we would....
Yeah. I can only see myself using reddit if it's in a goole search or something. I will not be using it recreationally anymore. I find kbin to be a nice change of pace.
Apologies if this is the wrong place for this. A few subs opened up and were discussing the possibility of extending the blackouts. The majority wanted the blackout to end to keep the influx of content. That was to be expected....
This is a huge problem on reddit as a whole, IMO. The whole website is chock-full of doomers, cynics, and pessimists who are quick to say why every piece of good news is bad, actually, why every attempt at change is doomed to fail, why there's no hope for anyone anywhere trying to do anything, and we should all just lie down and wait for the sweet release of death. It's universal, across almost all the big subs, regardless of subject matter.
I'm not sure why reddit ended up that way, but it was both exhausting and depressing. That doomer shit is contagious, spend too much time immersed in it and you catch yourself thinking that way too. And, well, it's just sad to see everyone around you being sad.
One thing I'm loving about Lemmy / KBin so far is that it's not like that. Maybe it's just because they're still small and new, but people seem less nihilistic here. Not polyanna-ish toxic-positivity optimistic either. Just... normal. It's so refreshing. God, I hope this place stays this way!
@mattmcal kbin magazines have "tags" that they can set. mastodon posts can use hashtags and do so as their way of searching/sorting stuff. so kbin pulls in posts with particular hashtags into the magazines that have the related tags. sometimes this sorting doesn't work, so kbin just puts them into the @random magazine.
As for the difference between articles/threads and microblog posts, I'm not sure how they're handled in the activitypub protocol (I think they're all marked as different?) but they're functionally all shared between instances. our threads here on kbin show up in mastodon as posts retweeted by a particular user and then replies to those posts.
notably, threads are newer and seem to have more information associated with them.
Does anyone know of any communities on Lemmy to talk about JRPGs? It's got to be one of my favorite genres, of which I'm probably most passionate about the Xenoblade series (though I've not had the chance to play the Xenosaga games)....
First of all, let me say that while the admins can do what they want, I think it's pretty unfortunate that beehaw is defederating from .world and shitjustworks. I don't want to see the fediverse fracture, I want it to encourage conversation with others....
YSK that kbin.social is now federating, adding hundreds of communities and ~26k more users content
Because they don't get listed by browse.feddit.de you'll want to browse https://kbin.social/magazines to browse "magazines", which is what they call communities...

What are some magazines you'd like to see on kbin that don't exist yet?
Are there any communities you've not yet seen on kbin that you used to visit on Reddit?...
The harsh truth is...
That Reddit will not shut down. It will take the hit and go on and probably make at least some money. Only, it will be a much different place, more like Facebook or Instagram, in that it will be full of ads and less specific information....
How many accounts do you have on lemmy/kbin?
First time posting, but i was wondering if i was the only one who had more than 2 accounts in total on here
Curious, if you were/are a Reddit user, will you be leaving the platform for good or have you already? CEO has called unpaid moderators' concerns "noise", that will be "passing soon."

Disconcerting responses on Reddit over blackout
Apologies if this is the wrong place for this. A few subs opened up and were discussing the possibility of extending the blackouts. The majority wanted the blackout to end to keep the influx of content. That was to be expected....
How can I block all Lemmygrad content? As a user can I block an instance? Are there instances that already block them?
Yes, so I want to browse all but actually control the content, block instances, block keywords, etc... currently using Jerboa, but not married to it.
JRPG communities?
Does anyone know of any communities on Lemmy to talk about JRPGs? It's got to be one of my favorite genres, of which I'm probably most passionate about the Xenoblade series (though I've not had the chance to play the Xenosaga games)....
Anyone else prefer the app over the desktop website?
Idk it just seems to work/look better and doesn't sign me out whenever I go on some certain instances
Will lemmy.world be defederating from beehaw.org now?
First of all, let me say that while the admins can do what they want, I think it's pretty unfortunate that beehaw is defederating from .world and shitjustworks. I don't want to see the fediverse fracture, I want it to encourage conversation with others....
In case anyone has moral issues with migrating to Lemmy vs Kbin, check this out. (kbin.social)
So yea, turns out the dude stole a lot of code from other projects and people.
