@serapath

Have been looking at again, do you think we can build this:

The Open Media Network is a trust based, human moderated, project that builds a database shared across many peers (both and server). The project is more important for what it DOES NOT DO, than what it does do, using technology to build human networks. There are ONLY 5 main functions:

• Publish (object to a stream of objects) – to publish an object (text, image, link)

• Subscribe (to a stream of objects) – to a person or organization, a page, a group, a hashtag subject etc.

• Moderate (stream or object) – you can say I like/dislike (push/pull or yes/no) this etc you can comment.

• Rollback (stream) – you can remove from your flow (instance database) untrusted historical content by publishing flow/source/tag.

• Edit (meta data of object/stream) – you can edit the metadata in any site/instance/app you have a login on.

We would build in the moderation tools of the .

This is the back-end of the project to build a trust based, grassroots, semantic web. The front-end may be anything you like, for example regional-/city-/subject-based sites to a distributed archiving project

The data cauldron and the golden ladle. The technology we call the .

The is no way to edit or remove questions. The is no way to talk to anyone... A normal "trust" fail, except this time it is a hardcoded due to the use of this CMS for the event. Before this we used with which worked well, then silos that worked after a fight each time to get chat turned on, now we are here , every tech event has pushed this "control" mess over the public. What are you guys in "control" going to do to stop this.

@subMedia I wonder what this instance is running on... and how it's funded ongoing, the lack of transparency on this is a troubling, but also normal with activism... would prefer to have a way to find this out if at all possible.

Hamishcampbell, to random

If you want to take your data when this instance closes down, "You can request an archive of your posts and uploaded media. The exported data will be in the ActivityPub format, readable by any compliant software. You can request an archive every 7 days." do this now

Hamishcampbell, to random

A reminder this instance will have to shut down due to lack of funding soon #modteam

We need your feedback on this.

Hamishcampbell,

@rooftopaxx @nedhamson the is no shutdown date yet, we are still consulting but as you say I don't think this instance has the focus or community to stay online.

Hamishcampbell,

@nedhamson @michaelgraaf @rooftopaxx

you can see the money coming out here, but this is mostly only to cover the mastodon instances, as the OVH servers have been paid out of historic foundation funding that has now run out.

https://opencollective.com/open-media-network/expenses

We try as much as possible to run things

You can find a lot of documentation on this here http://hamishcampbell.com which i use as a "collective backup".

The first part is about democracy, the second part is hard politics, and is more nasty.

The was booted up on grassroot passion and crowed funding, it was sustained in the early growth by crowed funding and expanded (in an often not helpful way) by passion. Over the last 2 years we have seen this shift sharply to “institutional” funding, some of this has been behind the seanes “think-tanks/academia” but over the last years the though and more specifically have taken a central role in funding just about all fedivers projects and much background technology.

In this, we have moved from meany 1000’s of people shaping the direction in a radically transparent way to handfuls of people controlling the levers of influence in a more opaque process. This is a clear and very obvues failing of governance, kinda normal and very obvuesly fail.

Now the wider project pour funding directly down the drain, which is a normal outcome so not an issue for us as the money is wasted anyway. are doing good, they are funding grassroots technology, so they are people we should work with.

How do we start to mediate this issue “In this we have moved from meany 1000’s of people shaping the direction in a transparent way to handfuls of people controlling the levers of influence in a more opaque process” And more importantly rebalance the agenda that flows with this funding https://unite.openworlds.info/Open-Media-Network/4opens/wiki/Funding-of-openweb-projects this second part is a BIG problem, this first part is about democracy, the second part is hard politics, and is more nasty.

We need fresh thinking on this mess

There will be lots of VERY bad behaver from the every side in this reboot, let’s try and keep diversity of voices in place with process. Please don’t become a prat, as it’s easy to start, and it’s hard to stop, mess and more mess.

Prat ish behaver comes in waves, that matches the waves of and the Alt reaction to them, this flotsam can make things messy so good to shovel and compost.

Our main in alts is from our blinded and the culture they have spread for the last ten years… this is very messy and will do damage. As this is a form of “common sense” it’s hard to compost.

We need fresh thinking on this mess.

In #ActivityPub "governance" at the moment people are mostly #dogmatic #NGO crew, some are #mainstreaming careerism, others are doing #geekproblem #grassroots careerism.

Neither of these are real friends of any alternatives, they are friendly enemies ;)

On the subject of the mailing list, It's hard to understand where/what/why. People forget to communicate the social understanding, this shrinks down the group, I don't know what it means, why it matters and what agender are being pushed there. It's my subject, so I should be interested, this is obtusely a problem for communication. i.e. a mess :)

I think is the path, in this we do have to say NO to the "police". How this works is based on "trust" and firm foundations, and yes our only has a skeleton foundation, a good one but needs much more support, the event is for laying this support into the ground as foundations to build on.

In the today and the in general our are peeking prat, would be good if we could push away from this mess makeing

Hamishcampbell, to mastodon

Resource use is an issue with the codebase, it's not a on using it but is an issue to think about using a different codebase instead.

With Mastodon going down the path and wedded to feudalism as "governance" we also face these common issues for tech projects.

We make a mess in good to try different paths

He is not able to continue to keep our server alive beyond 8 Oct without some donations, or funding. We are willing, as a web developer and programmer to work on any project you want (non CAGEMAFIA) in exchange for a donation to help #activism.

The undeclared war on #4opens is becoming "common sense" on the #fediverse with the shift to #mainstreaming this is back to the mess we were stepping away from with our #openweb reboot.

We all know the "free software" vs. the corporate "open source" split. But if the last years showed something it is that only using "freedom" as a fundamental principle isn't doing enough, it's just too limited.

If we want our communities to build software for a "common good" we might need to start thinking about other fundamental values and reframe "FLOSS" into something more goal oriented.

We need to integrate ideas of inclusion and environmentalism, about harm reduction and overcoming internalized colonialism that have shaped so many projects and communities (including to a degree the fediverse).

"Freedom" always sounds good and useful but it's just not enough, it's not tangible enough, to open for being captured by right wing narratives.

#GitHub should make issues and discussions disabled by default when creating a new project. #FOSS doesn't mean it comes with support or warranty (and all OSS licenses explicitly state that it doesn't) and you shouldn't expect individual developers (and especially newcomers that don't know what features and why they should disable) moderate communities around their projects, help everyone with everything, and fix all reported issues.

witchescauldron,

@orsinium this is a bad path to start down. Best not to step away from the and the native flow built into our traditions.
