Another PICO-8 update for running on the Anbernic RG35XX.

I had a game (Yarn) that worked fine, then eventually would not run, gave the "No carts found" error... But this time I found a fix.

I pulled the SD card and deleted the file found at Saves/CurrentProfile/saves/fake-08/cdata/yarn.p8d.txt and that fixed it.

So I guess sometimes the saved data becomes corrupt and deleting it fixes things.

I may try this for any PICO-8 games that exhibit this corrupt behavior:

Make a copy with a different name (and load them both on the SD card) and see if that one works fine after the original craps out.

My thinking is that if I am not around a computer this could be a quick preventative fix...

So basically multiple copies with different names.... though I'm guessing they would not save state since the system would see them as different games so... maybe not.

(Or I could just play a different game I guess!)

Oh wait, wait... I think I can just write a shell script to delete the bad save files!

That should be simple to hardcode, a bit more difficult to make one that works with any file... but should be doable. (Maybe not by me though.)

Huzzah! A script works. I have a script that can run on the Anbernic RG35XX to delete a bad save file from a PICO-8 game.

It's not idea, it's got the name hardcoded, but it does work.

So I can write shell scripts for this thing? I have ideas...

Wait, wait... I should be able to check the directory then get the most recently modified file and just delete it.

So once a game's save file goes corrupt just delete it immediately.

Sounds like I've got a project for this weekend...

There's always the terminal... but you'll go mad trying to type into it.

I tested a whole lot of PICO-8 games on the Anbernic RG35XX and these are the results (so far! I still have a lot to add to the list but I'm going to go play now.)

Weird issue with GarlicOS on the RG35XX today. Games launch, then quit, and the screen blinks/flashes repeatedly. (Doesn’t happen when I switch back to stock OS.)

A video showing a flashing screen.

rasterweb,
@rasterweb@mastodon.social avatar

@pixelbud Both, but I've removed ROMs and saved data and it appears to be OS related. Stock OS has no issue.

I did find a few other posts online about some flickering issue with GarlicOS.

I'll probably just reinstall GarlicOS (which gives me the opportunity to do a two-card setup now).

I solved my own problem! It seems retroarch.cfg became corrupt. Someone made an "app" that can fix it. You copy it into the APPS folder and launch it using RetroArch to replace the config file.

I've learned to lower my expectations with the Anbernic RG35XX when it comes to playing PICO-8 and TIC-80 games. Lots of them are fine, but some either run super-slow, or get errors when they run.

The ones that do work definitely work well, so I just need to focus on those.

(To be fair I didn't even know about PICO-8 or TIC-80 when I got it, so those are all just bonus games.)

@ktec @a_cup_of_sugar @krystman @requiem It's a work in progress, but I started taking notes about the PICO-8 games that work or give me issues on the Anbernic RG35XX (which uses Fake-08).

As I’ve been playing all these old games on the RG35XX I’m learning what kind of games I like. Games where I have to fight? No thanks. Games where I have to run around and find things and avoid obstacles? Much better. (Sort of like real life I guess!) I look forward to learning more about myself on this journey.

This SEGA document
https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2023/07/mid-1990s-sega-document-leak-shows-how-it-lost-the-second-console-war-to-sony/
kinda makes me want a Saturn. … Is there not a retro Saturn emulator? All the things I find are Genesis at most.

At the time, I played some on a friend's Saturn, but I'd just quit getting all consoles, and focused on PSX because: Wipeout (had to wait a couple months), Rayman, Ridge Racer, Twisted Metal, King's Field, etc.

mdhughes,

So I'm gonna punt on getting any kind of Saturn emulation today, and got an Anbernic RG35XX to play Genesis games portably/physically (technically I can do that on the Switch Lite, but I won't pay for NTDO's PLUS service, and anyway it's morally wrong to play SEGA on NTDO)

There is an RG505 which seems, maybe, to play Saturn? But it's $$$ and I don't see good reviews yet.

Buncha good reviews of 35XX, like this:

I think I’ve got GarlicOS set on the Anbernic RG35XX properly now, including ROM search, which I was missing.

I still need to do a few things to improve the setup, add a second SD Card, and tweak things here and there, but I’m liking the new setup!

I love playing Pico-8 games in the retro handheld. Today I used splore to find and play online carts :11111:

ktec,
@ktec@mastodon.social avatar

@siquis Is that an RG353V or RG353VS?

Anbernic and similar handhelds really are great for playing Pico-8 and TIC-80. The 3.5" size and 4:3 screen aspect ratio are perfect.
