So, given the kinda joke about people hating phone calls, yet using voice chat in games, I can't help wondering what people's preferences may be on chatting in games.

When you play online games, which do you lean towards when it comes to text/voice chat, or other options I didn't fit here, contextual pinging (e.g. Apex Legends), emotes, or voice/chat commands (e.g. Team Fortress 2/AoE 2)?

Repost/boost as you will, curious about this!

Does Proton for games on Linux work without using Steam? 🤔

I know vaguely of stuff like Lutris, so I'm still wondering how gaming on Linux looks if you're not completely bought into Valve's pseudo-monopoly. That should be in line with Linux thinking, right?

If it does, hell yeah. Then the other trick might be controller stuff outside of Steam, but one step at a time.

If GameFAQs doesn't have cheats for a PS1 game, where else do you look? Alternatively are there cheat files for PS1 emulators to load in? 🤔

What's a game called, or what is the genre of a game, with detailed interactivity and interesting worldbuilding without RPG progression systems or mechanics? 🤔

You might say "immersive sim" but these often also have that, for me at least, RPG baggage attached. Although not always, as Dishonored arguably sheds much of that in its design.

Still, unsure how to search for these sorts of games.

Is there a...Not exactly a game, but sort of a digital/software toy, that one might dabble with that doesn't have one get into the weeds of code to roam around custom 3D environments/models and place 3D assets around that one's made?

The closest I've found so far is Minetest, but I'm interested in something that would allow for non-blocky environments as well.

For any game devs or voxel software devs out there, what particular reasons are there for often opting for larger cubes for voxels?

My rough understanding (as I've found it tricky to find more accessible technical info on voxels), is that they don't necessarily even have to be cubes at all.

Setting that aside though, I'm mainly interested in the scaling question, as I know smaller cubes can & have been used occasionally.

It just hit me that I think Haunted PS1 is still only on Twitter and that's disheartening. I'm not missing their account somewhere around here, right?

What online multiplayer games play well over wifi/higher latency?

I'm thinking turn-based games may work okay in this respect, but which of those might you recommend besides Civ? Also what other types of games work better over wifi/higher latency than you might expect?

I know ideally you'd simply wire up your system to not have to fuss with either, but it's not always an option in some circumstances.

Not a ton of experience with Linux so I may be missing something obvious, but a prebuilt binary should mean I can download, unzip, & double click the binary and, if everything else is situated, run it, right?

E.g. a little game like this: https://luckeyproductions.itch.io/opensaucer

Tried this on Ubuntu Mate via file browser & running via terminal but no luck, only illegal instruction & illegal instruction (core dumped). 🤔

I remembered something I kept forgetting to ask. Is it true that we have to insert the game cards on the at certain times to prevent malfunctioning in the future? Or is it just an urban legend? Just imagine how that would be for people with 200+ games. 😅

gmr_leon, (edited )
@gmr_leon@mstdn.social avatar

@helligbird 🤨 Malfunctioning of the Switch itself, I take it ya mean, or the game cards somehow? Tbh I'm more concerned about the longevity of the batteries in the Switch units, and whether one might be able to use it strictly docked/hardwired in the event of battery failure & inability to source a replacement.

Still, interesting rumor, but I feel like it may only be an urban legend.

Is there a site/tool to help browse consoles' digital stores by exclusives?

I play on PC and console, and pretty much anything that's multi-platform I lean towards getting on PC since PC tends to be more reliably backwards compatible. However as not everything's on PC, I also get consoles for a mix of exclusives and less finicky local co-op games.

But narrowing to exclusives is surprisingly tricky, so...Any help?

Does Playnite have a year in review setting/feature?

Seeing some of the Steam year in review posts here & there made me wonder if Playnite has a feature like this stowed away somewhere. Another more offline app I use for music has it to where you can share an image of your most played music from the past year, so I'd think similar might be possible with Playnite.

Anyone happen to know?

What games would you suggest that have LAN support these days?

While PC may be one's first thought here, I'd also be really interested in any mobile games that might leverage one's local wifi network for multiplayer.

Classics are a-okay for suggestion too, btw!

since free in video games has come to mean more like heavily monetized, predatory business models, and even being rife with ads, what's another word or way to describe games that are free but without all that noise?

What are some other games like Autonauts, where you put together helper entities to do some odds & ends?

Emphasis on the putting together part, as it's a different feel from queuing up units in other games, which otherwise could be considered similar.

For other gaming folks out there that have used their game name elsewhere online (game forums, social media, etc.), uh, how's that affected you sharing it with people you meet offline that you want to play with?

It's made me kind of split on the matter tbh.

Given the predatory monetization of so many "free" games, and the distorted use of the term in relation to subscription services, I feel like one almost needs an altogether different term for entirely free games.

That is, no monetization, no subscriptions required, ideally no sign-ups required (albeit that's as much a reach as the rest).

Non-commercial is probably the best term to use, but a mouthful. Not sure of better though.
