#Helldivers2 is one of the best #multiplayer games right now because it puts the player experience first. Read more about why the game is so much fun and successful:
Nakama is a open-source self-hostable server for games and apps. It has a native Godot integration among a hundred other things. Heroic Labs are making something incredible.
I enjoyed making my own (super basic) user account and auth system for #Liblast, but to get things done, I'm gonna rather learn #Nakama !

What online multiplayer games play well over wifi/higher latency?
I'm thinking turn-based games may work okay in this respect, but which of those might you recommend besides Civ? Also what other types of games work better over wifi/higher latency than you might expect?
I know ideally you'd simply wire up your system to not have to fuss with either, but it's not always an option in some circumstances.
This video on third places in games kinda fumbles about when trying to highlight games that sorta offer these places, leaning a little too brief-overview, but it opens a worthwhile discussion imo.
Online spaces/games as a sort of third place, maybe better called fourth? Somewhere outside the local scope that a third place is more geared toward.
Whatever one may want to call it, I think it's good to think on.
We uploaded Moonbear Typing to itch instead of GGJ in protest over their AI sponsorship, and made our game with hand-tweaked, ethical, proc-gen content.
I'm not one for "New Year's resolutions", but I am one for overly ambitious projects.
For 2023, Project365 is "One New Game Per Day".
Given that I have 634 unplayed games in my Steam account and {mumble} unredeemed bundle Steam keys, there's a reason my unplayed collection is tagged "Pile of Shame".
I'll pin this to my profile, and give a brief summary here each day (or x, if I miss x days due to work or stuff).
I'll play 15-30 minutes of (at least) one new game I've never played before (or played less than 15 minutes of). I'll give every game at least 15 minutes, even if I hate every minute of it.
I'm also open to suggestions; if you reply to this thread with a game, I'll schedule it, or tell you what I thought of it.
One of the things that's come up is that I have a bunch of games that I've played once, and not touched again.
Shatterline is a multiplayer F2P co-op PvE & PvP FPS with some roguelike & extraction shooter gameplay elements.
Launching a F2P FPS into early access in 2022 was a huge risk in an already flooded market.
Launching a F2P FPS in 2022 when your development headquarters are based in Kyiv, Ukraine? They don't make risk-management charts that big.
The premise is interesting, and the intro is well done. Even the initial PvE tutorial level is great. The gameplay is smooth, and the UI is polished.
However, the problem with F2P multiplayer shooters is that there are so many options available that a game has to present something that's utterly unique to rise above the crowd, and Shatterline doesn't quite deliver that.
In this case, that's less my judgement of the game, and more that Steamcharts shows that the average players has gone down consistently every month since launch averaging 285 players per day over the last 30 days.
No matter how good Shatterline's design and gameplay is, with a game that's primarily multiplayer, without the players, a game is pretty much doomed to failure.
Unfortunately, as interesting as Shatterline's backstory is, and as nice as the gameplay is, I suspect Shatterline may follow in footprints of The Cycle: Frontier before too long.
