Does Proton for games on Linux work without using Steam? 🤔

I know vaguely of stuff like Lutris, so I'm still wondering how gaming on Linux looks if you're not completely bought into Valve's pseudo-monopoly. That should be in line with Linux thinking, right?

If it does, hell yeah. Then the other trick might be controller stuff outside of Steam, but one step at a time.

averyminya,
@averyminya@mastodon.social avatar

@gmr_leon I personally would stay far away from anything Epic, I hestitated to even use Lutris for the free games.

averyminya,
@averyminya@mastodon.social avatar

@gmr_leon Phew! Not suggesting that you specifically were, but there have been many times where Lutris + getting away from Steam tend to result in the "Thank Goodness for Tiny Underdog Epic".

Every once in a while I forget that Lutris supports more than just EA/UBI/Epic because of it. No harm meant!

@punkrockvader Nice! I just heard about this one, although it was being compared to the same era's Hoth Generator Battle! The Rebel Alliance and the Empire both have a very interactable play scene where launching a unique missile and hitting a target will "explode" the other players base. Really fun!

Continuing on project whatever-it’s-called.

It took me an embarrassingly long time to get this working, but I now have some basic context steering implemented. Still somewhat jank under certain conditions, but I can at least see the feasibility on the horizon now.

Here I have some debug visuals turned so you can see what it's thinking.

2 trolls in a test level. They have colored arrows around them to indicate their desired movement, what directions they should avoid due to obstacles, and what their final computed velocity is. They avoid each other and environmental obstructions as they make their way towards the player.

@renolc The Superhot-Crypt of the Necrodancer style (real time action turn based) is such a vibe

Hrm.
I've avoided Nier: Automata because of the fanbase/fanart, but I just got curious and actually looked up a short video and... it kind of looks like what I wish Bayonetta 3 had been.

Anyone have any experience with it? How open is this? Hub based? JRPG styled? Level based with larger stages?

averyminya,
@averyminya@mastodon.social avatar

@Gwendolyn The game has a very wide range of genres by the time you'd played through it a few times.

That said, it's primarily an open area 3rd person action JRPG. Maybe a bit like Xenoblade Chronicles, map wise, there's a few areas you revisit as "home" but they're not really "home" if that makes sense.

I feel similarly as you do about the art and the fan base. Rest assured, the game itself is pretty separate from that and quite good. Definitely worth replaying a few times.

The fact that Tetris Block never became a playable character in Super Smash Bros. is a disservice to the gaming community.

@dfx But think of how much money they could have saved by not including this! Think of the profit margins!

I mostly game using my Switch, but I do own two PC games on Steam (Firewatch and Transistor). My issue is that I absolutely hate playing with keyboard/mouse. Is it possible to get a controller that connects to PC and works with Steam?

averyminya,
@averyminya@mastodon.social avatar

@greene You can connect your Nintendo controllers via bluetooth using Steam! I personally LOVE the Steam Controller, but that's not widely available anymore and can take some getting used to. I love mouse and keyboard for games that need precision, but sometimes you do want to sit back, or the game doesn't need to be as precise. It's a great medium!

But, you'll probably stick with your Switch stuff :D It's all ready for you to pair!

Today was a bad day for Linux Gaming, at least for me.

  1. I wanted to play DCS: World with head teacking like always
  2. My system stopped recognising my Oculus Rift CV1 sensors, throwing all sorts of USB errors in dmesg
  3. I switched to the linux-lts kernel, which caused even more problems with the GPU. The graphical environment never showed up.
  4. Back on the regular linux kernel, I settled for a phone strapped to my head for head tracking.
  5. After two hours of gameplay, KWin crashed and failed to restore my open applications including the game.

I'm done for tonight. 😩

averyminya,
@averyminya@mastodon.social avatar

@fell nore than I could say in 500 characters, that's for sure!

The most common one in my life is the USB port getting shorted, effectively killing it? But it still half-functions, just with inconsistent data delivery - I'm thinking it comes closer to a 2.0 and so any possible 3.0 protocol stops it?

All kinds of weird quirks. When it works it's great. When it doesn't work, it still kind of works? And if you expect it to work, it means that it's definitely NOT going to work...

I'm no fan of Meta/Facebook, but it is a little irritating listening to some of the Quest 3 reviews out there. That injection of a line like "Well, we KNOW the Quest 3 won't be as powerful or as sophisticated as the Apple Vision Pro!"

Sure. I guess. Vision Pro isn't out yet, but I get that tech journalists make more money hyping up Apple.

I just wish there was more categorizing on that point. Where a headset that isn't out yet, and will likely only sell around 100,000 units over 2024, and costs SEVEN TIMES MORE than the Quest 3.
Well, we would expect that headset to be a bit fancier right?

Maybe chilling the VR market to wait for Apple to catch up, is NOT the most responsible advice we could be giving consumers interested in VR?

since free in video games has come to mean more like heavily monetized, predatory business models, and even being rife with ads, what's another word or way to describe games that are free but without all that noise?

averyminya,
@averyminya@mastodon.social avatar

@gmr_leon that's an interesting one. I think I'd want to push all monetized F2P games into the "freemium" category. The only other thing I can think of is not very succinct - along the lines of non-monetized F2P? lol
