Finished watching "The Breaking Point" last night (1950). Liked it much more than I expected, but I pretty much love all noir, so...

The last shot is heartbreaking.

The second film adaptation of 's To Have And Have Not -- the 1944 Bogart/Bacall is of course much more stylish.

I watched it on but it's apparently available at the -

NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD (’68): Yeah, this is just as great as everyone says it is. An impressive achievement, especially considering the budget and the circumstances of production. Genuinely gripping- and dare I say terrifying- from basically first scene, and it never stops. And now seeing this after being immersed in a culture that’s been so strongly influenced by it, you can see why it’s had that ability to be so influential. MOMA restoration via is the one to see.

IVY (’47): Another in the entertaining gothic noir themed series on , this has a fave of mine Joan Fontaine as title character, a woman with two men but scheming to instead get a third, who wouldn’t you know it is Herbert Marshall. Good story elevated by flair and style imbued by producer William Cameron Manzies. Enjoyable performances from key players, especially Fontaine, who is given more than her fair share of delicious close-ups.

Just realized the Criterion Channel has more Ishirō Honda films besides the Godzilla ones. Got a bunch of classics I’ve never seen.

First up, The Mysterians!

A bit of good news on the Turner Classic Movies front. Apparently management is being turned over to a pair of well respected Warner Bros. Pictures execs. Word is that Warner/Discovery is willing to spend money on TCM and has no intention (well, for now) of selling it. And still no ads.

When TCM was launched in 1994, my reaction was "Oh foo, yet another Turner channel." That turned out to be one of my worst calls of all time, because TCM is a gem, and the loss of their GM of 25 years, programming director, and others has enormously upset film fans up to very high levels indeed.

IMHO, one of the best and collection of films is found on in the collection: WOMEN MAKE FILM

First, there's the amazing 14-part by one of my favorite filmmakers, Mark Cousins, called WOMEN MAKE FILM. Then that's followed by a number of films by the filmmakers mentioned in the documentary spanning the history of .

A picture of Mark Cousins in from of a wall with a mural saying BAP Bollywood Art Project. He wears a shirt that says 'Masulin Feminin' referring to the Godard film of that name.
