Name a film you've seen that left you with the thought, "This is art." If you want to explain why it made you feel that way, that would be pretty cool of you.

The Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival, which always has an exceptional line-up, announced its competition selection and, as expected, it looks great! Including Payal Kapadia's "A Night of Knowing Nothing" (2021) and new films by Zhang Mengqi and Trinh T. Minh-ha.

Iranian director Rouzbeh Rashidi has released his new film, "Elpis" (2023). I had the pleasure to see it and I wrote down a few thoughts for EFS Publications.

I'm saying goodbye to regular blogging on Slow Cinema. Why? I tried to explain it on my blog.

It's been several days that I have this very image of Michael Haneke's "The White Ribbon" (2009) in my head. I don't know why, but I have the feeling that I should rewatch the film.

“The pain doesn’t make you want to live. How many lives I have? Nine!”

Wang Bing's "Til madness do us part" (2013) is an exceptional document on China's mental asylums, and the sometimes arbitrary reasons for people's detention. It's not an easy watch but essential.

A new Apichatpong Weerasethakul! Albeit only a short film...

"There are demonstrations in Bangkok but the insects on the white bed linen have other concerns, if they have any at all. In his short film hovering on the border between dream and wakefulness Apichatpong Weerasethakul again blends familiar banality with the realm of the dead."

A film I really need to see this year: Tatiana Huezo's new piece "The Echo". The trailer looks exactly like my kind of stuff.

"That Emilija Škarnulytė’s uses a snake as one of her documentary’s protagonists is perhaps not surprising. It is the snake that links the apple of knowledge and the brink of disaster, the abyss we have been staring at since 1945, more intensely during some periods, less concerned in others. It was a toxic trade we accepted."

My review of Škarnulytė excellent "Burial" (€): https://theartsofslowcinema.com/2023/05/11/burial-emilija-skarnulyte-2022/

My film for today: "Burial" by Emilija Škarnulytė (2022), a minimalistic but excellent documentary on our relationship to and with nuclear energy.

Review coming soon!
