I love this photo of my mother. This is exactly who she was, at her core. As a founder of one of the first pre-schools in Jakarta, that trained teachers, many of whom went on to start their own schools...

...she was a mother to so many.

I've actually been having a pretty nice, quiet, mostly alone weekend, and I've been surprised that it's been okay--even good!--after feeling lonely and down during this past week.

But then this morning a wave of grief took me for a tumble.

I think because it's my adult daughter's birthday today--and she chooses not to interact with me.

It is what it is.

Doesn't mean it's not hard sometimes.

Apparently it's now a thing for dinner party hosts to ask their guests for money to help with groceries. Eater reporter Amy McCarthy says that's not OK, and offers some suggestions for cutting costs if you want to host but can't afford to. What's your experience with this? I don't live in one (in New England at the moment) but hoping to come back to CA one day!

The pies sound great!

Mostly I ate them fresh (it wasn't a huge crop and I also had to share them with the birds 🙄 ), but I did occasionally put them on pizza and also as the muddle in a fig old fashioned 😉 .

@visionsofnapa I'm actually starting to think about maybe taking an airbnb (or some other arrangement) for a month in your next of the woods ... well, roughly -- thinking Petaluma... to try out living in the area, etc...

for various reasons, that might make more sense for me than going back to Santa Cruz.

Maybe in the fall... 🤔

@Cyrus this discovery (for me) makes me realize how little I really know about the jazz world, even just the bebop/swing era that I favor.

Which is actually a ton of fun -- to be able to discover so much "new" music this late in my life... I guess the silver lining of streaming services is that I can easily get to it.

Although more correctly, it shows the value of radio and human curation. Would I have learned about him just listening to a streaming service? Most likely not.
