#Stalking
Lisa Graves talks to Nicole Sandler on the Supreme Court's opinion on the Counterman V Colorado case. "American people need to have 21st century rules to deal with 21st century cyberstalking, stalking, harassment and that type of threat. This is not about core 1st Amendment rights. People don't have the right to harass other people and threaten them." #SupremeCourt#1stAmendment#stalking#CyberStalking#harassment#OnlineThreats#Facebook#Counterman

One lesson I learned early on was that research is nonlinear in time. Periods of (seeming) no progress, then spurts of output. To wit: I have four papers out this year. Let me tell you about them.
First, I completed a multi-year research effort under a National Institute of Justice grant to examine #cyberstalking. We produced 2 papers, one based on interviews with prosecutors and law enforcement that describes the challenges they face when processing the cases, and another paper showing empirical results.
From the first paper, we find that: 1) cyberstalking threats no longer about “stranger danger.” We need to develop better red flags to identify potentially threatening online behaviors. 2) we need to remove the “intent to harm” element from the cyberstalking statute because of harms that occur even absent intent. 3) criminal justice providers need better training to hell and manage victims. The paper is in press and available soon.
