Data-Hungry Dating Apps Are Worse Than Ever for Your Privacy

When we reviewed dating apps for the first time back in 2021, they did not do well against our privacy and security criteria. This time, our research shows they've gotten even worse for your privacy. And in 2024, the stakes are much higher.

Hey folks! seems to think I need an AI date with someone whose name is uncannially, perfectly terrible!

Apparently watching and vids lately means I'm lonely enough for , erm … I mean, "Vasilina"?

Anyone ever used Alovoa.com? I found their app in F-Droid and it seems like a great project. A privacy-respecting, donation-funded dating site, no fees or ads, all source code published. My only grizzle is that the app seems to open in Chrome, rather than being properly native, although they're apparently working on that.

: "How does the chatbot work? Where does its personality come from? Are there protections in place to prevent potentially harmful or hurtful content, and do these protections work? What data are these AI models trained on? Can users opt out of having their conversations or other personal data used for that training?

We have so many questions about how the artificial intelligence behind these chatbots works. But we found very few answers. That’s a problem because bad things can happen when AI chatbots behave badly. Even though digital pals are pretty new, there’s already a lot of proof that they can have a harmful impact on humans’ feelings and behavior. One of Chai’s chatbots reportedly encouraged a man to end his own life. And he did. A Replika AI chatbot encouraged a man to try to assassinate the Queen. He did.

What we did find (buried in the Terms & Conditions) is that these companies take no responsibility for what the chatbot might say or what might happen to you as a result."

Ya know what, lifes a lot simpler when you just delete all dating apps and say f-it.

@ThePlant a while ago I realized that: 1) I didn't get any answers even if in real life I sometimes get hit on. 2) What is the interest of a company that profits on singles for these people to stop being single? Nothing, they need single people 3) They push you to pay for more visibility (I wonder if you don't pay your visibility as a man is 0)

Look, I'm not gonna try a dating app anyway. I did, briefly, once, and got pinged to Hell and back by weird dudes who had fetishy ideas about me, and honestly, unless they develop an app which aims to serve divorced middle-aged nerds who wanna watch Red Green reruns and are too tired for much of anything else, I am noooot gonna look for partners through an app anyway.

Dating apps are the quickest way to become totally depressed about both oneself and the whole of humanity.

Out of over a decade on Ok Cupid, I had one date and made one friend which is lovely but... wow, it's a very low success rate.

tl;dr Dating apps are just a shade below putting a sad note into a bottle and chucking it into the sea.

Almost the very-first question in this year's Community Life Survey has the option to say I "don't have any friends". 😭

That's really sad and disturbing.

With the rise of and , we're gonna end up with the of people.

If we don't address the issues of & in connection to (especially among young people), our society will be in deep s*it very soon.

I'm in 2 minds about the way dating apps work these days.

On the one hand, being constantly nagged to unlock other ways of accessing other people on the apps makes online dating feel kind of stalky. Like you're paying someone to find out where someone is going to be so you can hit on them 🤔

OTOH having premium features people can pay for means they have a revenue model other than ads. Although that doesn't guarantee they're not datafarming us anyway.
