it took longer than i care to admit to revisit Talley Lambert's revised pattern for the Pulser's library: https://github.com/kephale/pulser/blob/main/example.py

but i finally have a significant need to use this for a bespoke annotation tool. such an easy pattern to extend.

In English-language typewriting and computer input, a typist’s primary and secondary transcripts are, in principle, identical.

Not so for Chinese computing. Chinese human-computer interaction () requires users to operate entirely in code all the time. Read this excerpt from Thomas S. Mullaney's book, The Chinese Computer: A Global History of the Information Age, to learn how the quest to type Chinese on a QWERTY keyboard created

Is your #school and/or #district facing the #ESSER cliff combined with other downward #budget pressure? We could be facing a pivotal moment in #education as the landscape faces remarkable forces for/of change, across #technology ( not just but including #AI of course, with #HCI and #cybersecurity ) and cultural shifts, politics generally, social-emotional development in Society, and so much more ... Here is the thing. It's going to work out. But put on your seatbelt, it might get a little bumpy.

@dgoldsmith hey .. nope. You!

You liked, boosted or replied to an earlier message on "education"... colleagues were talking about, in essence, an open weekly discussion around relevant ideas for educators today.

"SatChat" from Twitter was mentioned among others. No problem if you don't want to participate, as we're just getting started and it's a "clean slate" for fresh ideas.

We haven't set a hashtag yet, but I named a few options in the "running" for now in the message where you're tagged.

@MrAdamJohn I would prefer not to be involved, thank you.

Totally hooked on Professor @aquigley at today - it's all about and - and about - and how they can be used for secondary purposes to those originally designed - and at the end of the day we are all - and this limits the attention we have for input.

Super interesting!

Paper references are on Prof Quigley's Google Scholar:

spidie,

@KathyReid @aquigley This was an awesome talk, I am excited! Also very much appreciate that Aaron stuck around for the whole conference and we got to chat to him!

Just read preprint "The Future of HCI-Policy Collaboration" led by @fabulousqian. Authors argue for greater and more intentional involvement of researchers with . I appreciated this definition: "In practice, policy design is the iterative process of (1) identifying policy needs, (2) clarifying policy needs (or issue- framing), (3) formulating policy, (4) designing systems and services that implement policy, and (5) evaluating policy outcomes"

libroraptor,
@libroraptor@mastodon.nz avatar

@inquiline @academicchatter @sts there's a big tradition of looking to Gibson's framing of environmental psychology to talk about affordances. But most of it, at least in education-oriented computing, does not use the word "affordance" in the same way that Gibson does. Current writers often say "affordance" to mean something like "features" regardless of whether there is any interface design to make those features available or to guide users to finding and appropriately activating them.
