Inspired by the core gameplay of Minecraft, the name MineClone2 was not a particularly good one and it seems the developers were aware and so it's gone through a rebrand to be now called VoxeLibre.
Built on the free and open source Minetest game engine, it's one of the most popular voxel sandbox open-world games around as an alternative to Minecraft. As they announced on their Git page about the renaming
I've fixed a mini #bug in #Minetest: Some blocks sometimes fail to render a face in some instances when they are of the drawtype "4dir", i.e. blocks that can be rotated in 4 directions.
I found this bug because I heavily use this in #Repixture.
The crafting guide in #Repixture has become quite unwieldy because it's a long list of text. So today I've been experimenting with replacing it with a scrollable list of buttons. #usability#GameDev#Minetest
Once upon a time, I created a #Minetest mod that let you make a helmet out of a pumpkin or a watermelon and added it to the local server my kids played on. It was hacky and not practical but amusing . Maybe I should revisit that idea and release it for others to enjoy.
I am sure a lot of Mastodon et al knows of it already, but I just learned about Minetest, so I was having fun fucking around in it. I found an underwater waterfall among other things, and I live in a cave I've lined with cobblestone slab flooring. #Minetest

I've been upgrading the GUI system for #Repixture lately, upgrading from the ancient Minetest formspec version 1 to version 7. The new version makes work much simpler, as version 1 was pretty awful to work with (confusing coordinate system).
The player won't see this change, but here's a screenshot of the new armor page I made after the upgrade to version 7:
I think 6pm might be too late, so I am going to go ahead and start a 5pm-ish instead since I have some extra time today. I also want to see if doing more than hour feels reasonable.
This is a BIG technical update that completely replaces the old mob system (animals, monsters, villagers) with a complete new one written for Repixture specifically. The creatures of the world should now behave somewhat better, plus the new system is very extensible.

Any time Minetest comes up, there's the usual, "It's not a game it's an engine" explainer, but I think that whiffs on its potential a bit.
Minetest, in my reading up on it and toying with its demo game (Minetest Game), strikes me as faintly akin to Roblox. An open source Roblox with the rough edges that tends to entail, but all the same.
I think if the Minetest community ran with that mindset a little more, they might tap into something interesting.
There's already a decent start for Minetest in this direction. To start, you can download games built with it right from within the base engine/launcher.
Putting some more focus toward the latter, including pointing to more open source tools, and guides to use them, to help in the creative process, I think would be another step in the right direction. Might see about that myself
