There's a new newsletter out for April/May. As usual, Gabe and Co. continue to plug away at what is already a fantastic project:

https://owncast.ghost.io/owncast-newsletter-april-may-2024/

If you're not familiar with the project, Owncast is a project thet lets you host your own single-user streaming service, complete with web player, chat, integrations support, etc.

If you're into streaming on Twitch, Kick, etc, but would like something a little more or friendly, check it out.

Are there any up-to-date (ish) servers out there running a (ish) modpack?

Ideally hosted by someone(s) well-involved with the fediverse community.

Was originally planning on setting one up, but spread too thin on running projects. Would like to play with others though.

Boosts appreciated but never expected. Thanks ❤️

@vintprox @Niklp This appeals to me :)

Spent some time this morning checking out Archtec. Looks like a nice place to make home, if that's OK.

Testing Mastodon from the command line using the program called "toot". Looks and functions very slick. Not that I expected it to not function, but there is one unexpected thing about it! See, as everyone else on Fediverse, I have been putting ALT text on my pictures in order to make this social media more accessible. However, by accessible I always thought of legally blind people. But now that I am in a CLI Mastodon program I came to fully appreciate everyone's effort on ALT texting. You rock.

ety,

@darth Toot is great! Information-rich without being overpowering, and fairly user friendly too :)

Seeing the posts from yesterday reminded me I've got a Packard Bell with a Pentium 75 that needs some love.

... Huh. It won't start. Well it probably needs to be cleaned up anyways.

Turns out, not only was the ZIF lever not locked down, but that's only the beginning of my issues.

ety,
@ety@hive.institute avatar

Oh yeah, a link to that aforementioned project: https://github.com/SuperIlu/DOStodon

I've got the lever issue bandaided for now, but it looks like the onboard video is toast. I can hear it cycling up and POSTing, but no error beeps, no display.

I seem to remember the video being iffy the last time this board was powered up. I'll clean up the board, re-seat connectors and modules, see if that changes it, but otherwise maybe looking for a new video card.

Hey Fedi and community! When posting about (and trying to search by) specific games, what is the accepted norm for tagging, if any?

Is it more like or , or something else?

I'm wondering in particular about games that may share namespace with common words or phrases.

Thanks so much! <3

music streamers!

On New Year's Day Parade, we were chatting how to find each other on the directory... Maybe using a tag, like this? https://directory.owncast.online/tags/bonk

Although I haven't YET submitted one of my many tracks to a comp, I like as a tag! What do yous think?

ety,
@ety@hive.institute avatar

@gabek @ke7zum @meljoann oof, and I just finished writing a mega sketchy raid handler for my instance.

Actually, it's not oof at all, I love to see it! I feel bad every time I bolt some sketchy js onto the otherwise beautiful polish of OwnCast.

ety,
@ety@hive.institute avatar

@meljoann @ke7zum the last thing I need to do is add a consent modal, such as "The streamer is attempting you RAID you over to <url>. Do you want to go along?"

Right now it just yeets viewers over on streamer request, which squicks me out a bit. I was saving the modal for last because it's going to be a PITA to shim in.

(And @gabek don't sell yourself or the project short; the front-end is plenty polished!)

ety,
@ety@hive.institute avatar

@gabek @ke7zum @lislegaard @meljoann I think that's plenty respectable.

Though monetization is probably the absolute lowest priority for me, personally, I think it's probably something that's going to be top of mind for people looking to branch out from Twitch, and they're all going to have their own ideas on how to monetize.

Generally, agreed though, we can achieve a lot with the integration options in place today, especially the external actions.

Maybe a good starting point would be to assemble a list of all the neat community tools that have been built for owncast and look for gaps, start building POCs from there?

Oh my … Inscryption is SO good. So so good.

I’m not great at it yet but I’m loving the learning experience so far!

What other ‘spooky’ but fun games should I try out leading up to Halloween?

I am considering:
Barotrauma
Spirit Hunter: Death Mark
Hidden Deep
Jupiter Hell
Lamentum
Stasis: Bone Totem
Thymesia
White Night

ety,
@ety@hive.institute avatar

@britt Barotrauma is really good! Every once in a while we get a group going and it's proper spooky submersion horror.

... I will say, though, probably play it with friends who can control themselves into not trolling, because the game lends to it and it tanks 50/50 of our games.

    Today just reaffirms why I utterly loath quote-posting.

    ety,
    @ety@hive.institute avatar

    @nellie_m @weirdwriter @FreakyFwoof The backfilling issue is so annoying. Questions like this are a huge part of the reason I'm trying to find an admin-to-admin space for people running small and single-user instances. Thus far, I've had no luck finding such a space.

    Thank you for the workarounds. Reading into them a bit, I think you just made my day.

    I'm not well-enough informed to opine on quote posting, but it does seem like an official feature would be less prone to abuse than currently.

    Does anyone know of a congregation space for of small/single-user instances to discuss issues specific to them? Technical and social.

    I know there is an oft-mentioned, oft-beleaguered, Discord for admins of large[r] instances, but frankly their issues seem entirely different.

    Chat (vs Posting) preferred. IRC/XMPP/Matrix: good.
    Discord... OK.

    Other static-ish resources (e.g. wikis) also welcomed where they exist.

    Boosts appreciated ♥.

    What do we all call those people you try to have a conversation with and they just ignore everything you say and propose a counter / one-up point of discussion?

    I’m neurodivergent… it’s not like with Autistics telling you something because we’re excited to share. Not that at all.

    Someone help me with how to handle said personality trait. TY. 🙃

    • edit * This is just a general life/social observation from me, I'm not talking about the Fedi or anyone specifically.
    ety,
    @ety@hive.institute avatar

    @britt I don't know about the one-up side of things, but in my struggle to find the natural 'beat' of conversations sometimes, especially with unfamiliar people, it can accidentally end up turning into a veritable Wimbledon of counters and counter-counters specifically because I'm trying to engage on their topic.

    I'm hyper-sensitive to doing it, so now all conversations with people I don't know is an anxious line-straddling between Contribute Nothing and Contribute Wrongly 😅

    Microsoft wants to stream your OS to you. Ignoring the whole "Microsoft" angle on this, I personally hate this idea. I miss the days when a computer was a standalone device that COULD connect to the Internet, but didn't have to. These days, so many things DEPEND on having that connection, and just flat out won't work without it. Maybe I'm a stodgy old guy, but can't we go back? I want my computer to with exactly the same online or offline.

    The needs to learn some serious conflict resolution...

    If we ever aspire to become a serious alternative to corporate platforms we can't continue with this behavior. Let me explain.

    Two days ago someone created a "The_Donald" community of a well-known instance. Immediately there were cries for defederation, blocking, and suspicion about the admin letting racists run rampant on his instance.

    What ultimately happened was that when the admin logged in they removed that community. But before they even had time to realize what was happening they were already being accused of stuff and if any instance heeded the call to block, it would have caused damage to the users who would have their subscriptions / follows severed.

    Some users who've just arrived from Reddit and bring a fresh perspective are already wary of the shit show this can become.

    That instance resisted massive blocks because it was large enough. But what if it was smaller?

    ety,
    @ety@hive.institute avatar

    @ifixcoinops @slothrop @Wander wandering in here to express total agreement -- there's a strong culture of having to hit the nuclear button before everyone else, or indeed, before the full scope of the problem is understood and moderation teams have had time to intercede.

    I won't call it performative per se, but those I'm most concerned about in this regard are very quick to broadly announce that they've taken action, compared to announcing that they're considering action.

    ety,
    @ety@hive.institute avatar

    @slothrop @Wander

    To @ifixcoinops 's point, if defederation was so instant that it...

    • did not allow time for the offending instance's moderation team to intercede
    • disregarded the rest of the state of the offending instance,
    • did not give due notice to affected users to migrate contacts

    ...then it was probably more reactionary than harm-reductive.

    Defederation is a one-way path and instantly breaks connections in a way presently difficult to recover from. Admins should act as such.

    @thegibson @frameworkcomputer I have their 12th generation laptop, and with it, not a single regret, at all.

    Customer service, quality of manufacture, community engagement, company values. 10/10, blows other companies in adjacent spaces out of the water.

    Having gone for a piecemeal DIY route, the only part I ever had issues getting a hold of were the mainboard hold-down screws. They don't sell them on their marketplace (and I haven't heard a great reason why), and they're somewhat specialty.
